Albertans4Giving fights plan to slash charitable tax credits

Marissa SemkiwRebel Commentator

Is taxing generosity the PC Alberta way? In the new Alberta budget, the tax credit for donating to charity was slashed from 21% to 12.75% -- that's a difference of 40%.

A grassroots movement called Albertans4Giving is trying to reverse this decision.

Brad Tennant, a spokesperson for the group, says the $90 milllion the government will save by making this cut is "puny" compared to the overall budget.

He adds there are many different areas in which the government could cut funding, instead of punishing people's generosity while cutting the money going to organizations that help the community.

$5 billion deficit? As an Ontarian, we will trade Wynne for Prentice straight up. Not enough? We’ll throw in Matthews, Chiarelli, and Meilleur. Still not enough? Hell, take all the Ontario Liberals. Still not enough? Crap, I tried!

I believe placing ANY limitations on charitable giving is immoral. If I made $200,000 per year, but I could live quite comfortably on $30,000 per year, and wanted to give $170 ,000 to help feed orphans in third world countries, then I should be allowed to do that. The only income tax I should have to pay should be on that $30,000. For the government to tax the $170,000 would be equivalent to them taking food from the orphans mouths, and that is evil.

I’ll bet that Jim can’t look in a mirror and say “I’m a Liberal”. He can’t face the truth.
