Sid Ryan, the creep, certainly does have something up him - about Harper because he has been out to take down Harper. The spending for his campaigns against Harper is no doubt the finances he wants to keep secret.

Unions in general need to be held accountable, and Sid Ryan specifically needs to be investigated.

The very fact that both the Liberals and the NDP are against the bill that would bring accountability to the unions speaks for itself as to the morals of those two parties and their “illustrious” leaders.

I am a member of the left wing Canadian Association of University Teachers, and (1) it isdifficult to obtain accurate data on our local union s finances, and (2) next to impossible to obtain data on our national executive finances. And note that the Senate, in a surprise move, blocked a private members bill, by a Conservative, to have unions finances published, The anti-reform move in the Senate was led by then-Red Tory Senator Hugh Segal. The pro-union-corruption senator left to become head of Massey college in Toronto.

I think that as long as union dues are tax deductible, then the public should be able to see where the money trail leads.

I was a trade unionist from my 20’s into my 50’s. A unionist I greatly admired, my best friend’s father, related a story about the docks of Halifax in the 1950’s …he bore witness that Hal Banks arrived to break up a strike by Seafarers International…Hal arrived in a Cadillac convertible and two trucks arrived with him…one loaded with thugs and the other with Louisville slugger baseball bats. Hal brazenly passed brown envelopes to the two police officers invigilating the event…they looked in the stuffed envelopes and left…he named me their names …I will not repeat them here for I know such things are deemed to go too far even for this brave outpost of the truth….but both of those bag men for Hal Banks were subsequently chiefs of police for the city of Halifax…and you can bet that solidified my cynicism.

My best friends uncle was another unionist called “Eric the Red” and had a limp from a bullet wound he received in “the war against capitalism” …I knew he had served in the International Brigade in Spain and assumed it was from there..but no…it was from a coal miners strike in Glace Bay Cape Breton…where a British gun boat threatened to blow down the miner’s houses if they didn’t end their strike and Erick was shot in the hip by one of Canada’s own vingt-deux enforcing martial law.

It was because the union movement was repressed by such dastardly thugs that they decided to get their own….shall we say …janissaries….:-)

I can recall in Quebec…before the Parti Quebecois passed “anti scab” legislation…I walked a picket line with my placard lightly stapled to a pick axe handle…and and I taught other men on the line how to do an aikido takedown of police doing a cross check with riot batons.

Problem was that with that muscle came the likes of Jimmy Hoffa on the gangster front….and Hardial Bains on the political front.

Time for full disclosure and accounting…to the members at least…and to the public when and where it’s any of their business.

No big surprise. Sooner Bill C-377 comes into force the better.
