"Win or lose, we are one": Israel's Peace Players bring Jewish, Arab youth together through basketball

Igal HechtIsrael Correspondent

Israel's Peace Players bring Jewish and Arab young people together through basketball. The Managing Director, Karen Doubilet, is originally from Toronto. She explains that the program starts working with children at age six, and many participants will continue into adulthood.

The program features teams for boys and girls, with the girls teams providing a particularly welcome opportunity for those from communities in which female sports are discouraged.

Jewish and Arab girls take a break from practice to talk about how the program has improved their lives.

That’s really good to see. Let’s hope their parents are taking notes and having ingrained beliefs/prejudices modified for peace.

I love that they used basketball — invented by Canadian, James Naismith. Now that’s “peacemaking”. Team sports is also a powerful means of empowering girls, in particular. As one young girl notes, “when we play we don’t really need languages”. Isn’t that telling?

They have done this for years in youth soccer. There is also a men’s US style football League where Arabs play in Israel. Not sure what it will mean in the future.

Smart, effective, and down the road will make a difference.
Really enjoyed it.
Something positive, what a concept!

Awesome, such a wonderful story… however, so-called progressives will not be pleased.

As usual, Israel is ahead of the curve. Will they get recognition for this worthwhile endeavour? Doubtful. The lefties and muslims will pile all over them for allowing girls to (gasp!) play sports!
