Alberta election: Prentice calls coalition talk premature

Any talk of forming a coalition between his party and the NDP is far too premature according to Alberta PC leader Jim Prentice.

Any talk of forming a coalition between his party and the NDP is far too premature according to Alberta PC leader Jim Prentice.

Prentice was in Calgary reversing a budget item that would've reduced the tax credit for charitable donations.

Earlier, NDP leader Rachel Notley said she'd be open to cooperating with other parties in order to govern if there was no clear outcome on election day May 5th.

Prentice dismissed such talk as far too early.

"Geez we're only have way through the election. This is an early time to be judging outcomes. Seriously this election is only half way completed. It's an important discussion that we're having. These are challenging times, I'm hopeful of the future. I'm excited about the future of this province and I know we've dealt with these kinds of issues before and we'll deal with them again so I trust to the judgement of Albertans," says Prentice.

Speculation about a possible minority government outcome has heated up given poll after poll that has the PCs running third, after the Wildrose Party and NDP.

The PC and the NDP are fare more alike than one would like.

Red Jimmy is probably making a play for Liberal and NDP voters because, first of all he’s not a conservative. He’s a Liberal who is running under the conservative name because being honest and running as a Liberal is hopeless.

Secondly he’s hoping by backhandedly hinting that coalistion discissions with the NDP in the future might be possible he might attract a few more lefty voters because he sure as hell isn’t going to steal any conservative votes away from the wild Rose.

IF, this is his strategy (and I hope it is) it has a strong possibility of backfiring because NDP voters hoping for a coalition won’t vote PC they’ll vote for their own NDP candidate. Jimmy loves to think he’s this brilliant Machiavellian, political chess player but more often than not his careful scheming just flops.

“Premature”?
If Prentice were a conservative at all, there would be no talk about it period. The question would never come up. But Red Jimmy says it’s “premature” meaning there might be talk of it in the future. Man this guy is a weasel.

I think coalitions should be illegal because to me it smacks of overthrowing the elected government. It seems undemocratic to me.
