Alberta election: Secrecy around Denis case "bizarre" and "unCanadian"

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

Alberta Premier Jim Prentice has explained why Jonathan Denis is no longer Justice Minister: Denis is involved in a personal legal matter and his continued participation in Cabinet "wouldn't be appropriate."

Except that doesn't make sense.

Elected officials get sued and divorced all the time, yet they aren't asked to resign.

According to CBC reports, though, police were called to Denis' home. That's not a normal divorce.

The case isn't open to the public and a judge has issued a publication ban. That's not normal, either.

And what a coincidence that a justice minister gets to keep all this secret when no other Albertan would get that option.

Yet Denis is still running for re-election  -- lowly voters just aren't allowed to know why police came to his house.

This entire situation is simply unCanadian. Something needs to be done about it quickly, before election day.

I am glad Ezra clarified that the proceedings were “in camera” because family court matters are off limits to the press by legislation.

As for domestic violence…the whole truth on that matter has not been told since the last time Maggie brained Jiggs with a rolling pin (that reference will leave a lot of younger readers scratching their heads).

If sources know that the police visited the house do these sources claim that police removed him from the house?…if not there was no issue of family violence…police routinely escort or attend removal of personal belongings when requested to do so. Who has been going to the residence to sleep at night? Him? Her? Both? Unless the residence is in a gated community it would not be hard for a reporter to determine this.

I suppose getting Mr Denis to step down was a lot easier than the process of having every judge personally acquainted with him to recuse themselves……?? Could you imagine the feeding frenzy THAT would be for reporters,,,,now that I think about it that would take place wether on not he stepped down….her lawyer would probably want somebody with absolutely no connection to him and that might be a tall order. Is THAT the process they don’t want us to see?

And, if Mr. Prentice had sat back and done nothing, what would the public reaction have been?

Vlad, you make a good point that by making the court proceedings banned from publication it does invite speculation. It might be better if the judge ordered the proceedings open to the media.

It any case it matters not to me since there is no way I would vote for the PCs. This court case does not affect my decision one whit. Go Wildrose!

Most visits to the home by cops are “domestics”, especially around divorce time. Denis resigned – done usually in advance of a conviction of some kind.

So because Denis doesn’t want to disclose, Denis leaves the door open to speculation. And it appears that Jonathon Denis is a WIFE BEATER. Sad. Two smart people under the same roof who continuously tap each other’s buttons to the point of physical violence.

So here’s what Jonathon Denis needs to do – become a muslim and claim this act of violence as a religious and cultural right – the socialist/communist pigs in Canada (who are aligned with ISIS, islamic terrorism, etc) will run to his rescue.

Jonathon Denis is very likely hiding something………. otherwise he’d have the strength of integrity to insist that the courtroom be open to the public and media. His wife Breanna (Palmer) left the matrimonial home after just 6 months of marriage and she wouldn’t do that because Jonathon Denis snores or doesn’t put the toilet seat down. Better question is, on what grounds and on whose petition did Prov.Court Judge Richard O’Gorman issue this closed court order?!?!! How did this lying cheat get to be in Cabinet? What favor did he do? Why hasn’t Prentice FIRED this dumb arse !?? This FORMER cabinet member – Jonathon Denis, the Justice Minister and Solicitor General has LIED to the public and he MUST be turfed !!! SHAMEFUL and PATHETIC !!!! OR what if it is all a diversion from yet another scandal ??

Many lies are stated and sworn in family court. Common decency would see court records permanently sealed. Despite that the police were called to Denis’s home, in no way does that mean he did anything wrong.

I don’t see an issue here.

But I do have big issues with Prentice and his party. I will vote Wild Rose…again.

“Jims timing for an election couldn’t be worse”

Yea, isn’t that wonderful?

I am glad he called an early election, making Albertans angry for breaking his promise of fixed elections and for trying to catch the Wildrose off-balance, then just after presenting a budget with 59 new taxes and fees, making Albertans even more angry. Then he had to backtrack on the corporate tax increase. Now with problems with his MP and even trying to cover up some parts of it with a publication ban.

This is real good news. How much deeper can Prentice dig himself in? Keep on going, Mr. Prentice, keep up the “good” work!

Seems like some parallel circumstances with the want-to-be PC candidate Lall except he got turfed in favor of a floor crosser. Then there’s Allen from Fort Mac and his hooker issue in the states. Seems like Prentice is having a hard time just managing his so called team but he still want us to believe that PCs are the party for Alberta. I think we are witnessing the demise of the Alberta PCs and up for a new era for the Wildrose.

Great way of looking at the real issue, ezra! Totally agree.
