The Alberta legislature saw some excitement on Monday evening with interim PC leader Ric McIver eventually being removed from the assembly by the Sergeant at Arms.
It’s complicated how this all came to be, but I’m going to try to break it down so that we can understand exactly what happened and the underlying motivations for it all.
PC Leader Ric McIver introduced a motion, Motion 504. It asks the Government to reaffirm parental choice in education. Ric McIver has enough foresight to know that the NDP are obviously headed down a path where they will undermine the role of parents as the directors of their children's education. Smart.
The NDP just couldn't leave parents in charge of their kids so they offered an amendment to McIver’s motion that changed the entire meaning of the motion. It basically changed the motion from “parents are always in charge “ to “parents are always in charge unless the bureaucrats are first”. Ridiculous.
And that's where this all goes sideways. Watch my video to see what I mean. It was a real goat rodeo.
Why are the NDP making a mockery out of parliamentary procedure just to change a simple motion that affirms what Alberta already does with regard to education choice? They're doing this because that one motion by Ric McIver, who stumbled onto his conservatism again, drew a line in the sand between the NDP and our children.
The NDP will introduce poison pill amendments to motions even though they aren't allowed to do that. The Speaker will have magical pre-written favourable rulings to NDP amendments before any arguments were heard. It's underhanded and there's a bigger agenda at play.
The NDP will stoop to amazing lows to undermine parents.
