Alberta: Meet the photographer who captures the energy industry's positive side

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

A recent story at the Rebel's Megaphone blog caught my eye: Sean McCormick, an Alberta writer and photographer, uses his camera to tell "good news" stories about the energy industry that environmentalists and the media don't want you to know.

He'd noticed that local energy companies had beautified his area through public parks, recreational waterfronts and other gorgeous reclamation projects, but they never got any credit for it.

Sean wants to do something about this, and I talked to him about his new project.

Don't miss this selection of his stunning landscape photos!

I hope folks in the coal, oil and gas industries are watching; if they'd like to contact Sean McCormick about telling their stories, too, he's at

These images are a lot prettier than an eagle getting sliced by a windmill

Ken Hedger said: “Does he not know you are not allowed good stories about oil sands (signe Lizzie May)” Does anyone actually think Lizzie the Lush could focus long enough to see the story or pictures? Too skeptical? After watching her performance over Omar Khadr, I don’t think I’m too far off base……………

Sorry, said two things and only mentioned the plane. There was also the odd duck flying overhead, but I’ve yet to have to dodge one in all my time in the country.

Max, a few years back I wound up working for a small company that had a contract with a large energy company to take part in reclamation research. My part of it was spending three days in over 30C heat crawling laboriously across a field picking brome grass by hand. You almost needed a microscope to find the smaller plants. We had to do this wearing our hard hats, gumby suits with reflective tape, and steel toe boots despite being in a friggin’ field. The only two things above that could possibly have fallen on us was the company plane that occasionally flew over to make sure we weren’t breaking regs by removing hats, gumby suits, or boots, which would have been the prudent thing to do given the heat and working environment.

The other side of the field was being managed through chemicals. The company in question wanted to know which method provided a more effective control, and at what cost. The job sucked but the $35/hr didn’t.

I wish more people knew the insane amount of attention that energy companies put into doing reclamation right, how much it costs them, and the nonsensical (and costly) ‘safety’ regulations they are burdened with in this process.

Charles – they are overcome with the beauty of Alberta! It has left them speechless and I hope it lasts.

Hey all… Where is Terry and Jimmie on this topic… I see they’re no where to be found… Also where are all the other leftists that say the oil industry and the coal industry is the worst thing on this planet… Oh by the way! I forgot about Jane Fonda where is she now? Oh that right, she is jet setting between all of her different homes in the States.

Come on CAPP get this stuff out there, and enlighten the popualtion….

Well done Sean. I’m a videographer and photographer myself, so I appreciate telling the story with images. I remember as a young guy working on the pipeline doing right of way cleanup in the 80s. We would have to walk pails full rocks off of farmer’s pastures because they didn’t want the trucks running back and forth. A lot of companies take the effort to do it right, they need to be acknowledged for it. Selective cut forestry and replanting would be another.

What? There is a beautiful picture taken in Alberta?? We have been told over and over and over by the anti-oilsands freaks that Alberta is a wasteland all because of the oilsands!

Wow. I think my step-dad, were he alive today, would have me committed if I told him that his birthplace had a stunning lake-front and would be a great place for family vacations.
Amazing pics, Sean.

I think there are a lot of good news stories out there waiting to be told, but you won’t find them in the media at the national level. Here’s a Postmedia good news story about an energy company (Cenovus):

Here’s a Postmedia bad news story about an energy company (Nexgen):

Guess which story got national exposure?

This guy is doing what CAPP should have been doing for years – holding up the successes and the TRUTH in the face of over-the-top predictions of disaster; to wit: the recent Wabamum story per CN rails’s oil spill.

One dead duck. Well I stopped on a rural road to let a family of ducks cross, so that should make up for it. If I hadn’t stopped in time, would I be subject to the same scrutiny as Nexen?
