May 30, 2016 UPDATE: Before demanding apologies from Wildrose, NDP has plenty to be sorry about

Sheila Gunn ReidRebel Commentator

Derek Fildebrandt is the Wildrose MLA for Strathmore-Brooks and Shadow Finance Minister. In another life, Fildebrandt was a director with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation in Alberta and a perpetual thorn in the side of the former PC government, critiquing them for their out of control liberal spending.

It’s what he does now, but his target is the NDP. But Fildebrandt was just suspended from the Wildrose Caucus after a series of unfortunate events.

First, Fildebrandt and Wildrose faced criticism for being overly critical of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne as she sat in the legislature gallery as a guest of Premier Notley. Wildrose apologized for Fildebrandt’s tone in the legislature. Then the next day, he was expelled from caucus because it appeared he was supportive of a perceived homophobic comment on his Facebook page about Premier Wynne. He wasn’t. And he apologized for the social media misstep.

My friend and colleague Holly Nicholas did a great video explaining how this all happened and how it’s wrong. It’s been one bad move after another.

But about Derek Fildebrandt’s treatment of Premier Wynne, was Derek wrong or poorly behaved as the crybully lefties say? No. He was accurate. Fildebrandt was critical of Wynne’s big spending and bad ideas. These are legitimate criticisms and the same thing many Ontarians think all the time.

If Derek was poorly behaved because he told the truth, what about the NDP that very same day? If Derek and the Wildrose had to apologize for being right, does long time NDP MLA Brian Mason have to apologize for being wrong?

During the same series of questions to Notley that drew so much left wing ire towards Fildebrandt, NDP MLA Brian Mason called Wildrose MLAs and normal everyday people who agree with sentiments expressed in the legislature by Fildebrandt, “embarrassing cousins.”

Do you think Mason will apologize for insulting Albertans as quickly as Derek Fildebrandt and the Wildrose did for offending Wynne? Don’t hold your breath.

After that, Mason went right off the rails. He tweeted that he was never more appalled by the behaviour of MLAs than he was by the behaviour of Wildrose MLA's towards the Premier of Ontario. Mason’s appalling behaviour barometer might be broken. Earlier this spring, Mason himself shoved past the teenage legislature pages after they locked the doors in accordance with parliamentary procedure causing the NDP to miss a vote. Then there was the time NDP MLA Mike Connolly gave the Wildrose benches the middle finger during a debate and lied about it.

Yet, Brian Mason thinks telling the truth about Premier Wynne in a less than soft tone is appalling? What planet is Mason on?

Here's what really matters right now: We need conservatives in Alberta to get back to work holding NDP’ers like Brian Mason to account.

Now it’s time for everyone to show just how conservative we all are. As a conservative, I believe in personal responsibility, contrition and humility. Personal responsibility is a conservative value. Fildebrandt took responsibility for his mistakes and now it’s time for everyone else to do the same. Suspending Derek was a mistake. Admit it, fix it and move on.

The Wildrose party claims to be a party of the grassroots and I believe this to be true. But let's make the Wildrose party prove it. At The Rebel, we want grassroots voices heard. Go to and sign our petition asking Brian Jean to reinstate Derek.

Let’s get Derek back in caucus so that the Wildrose can do the work Albertans have asked them to do.

So, who are Brian Jean’s advisors?…
commented 2016-06-01 04:03:10 -0400
I very much appreciate the thoughtful comments of Albertans since my post some 24 hours ago… What is CRITICAL to the examination of Brian Jean’s “rush to judgement” is whether he personally decided to whip Derek Fildebrandt or was it was the advice/decision of the “smart gurus” behind him?… From my 40 plus years in politics and journalism, it has been my experience that shadowy back room assholes, with nothing to lose personally, give prompts to the likes of Brian Jean and then bob and weave when the shit hits the fan… So,

It’s going to be difficult to forgive Jean, but owing to his record he is worthy of a second chance. He made a serious mistake by suspending Filderbrant without justification and what he did was a serious slap in the face to Albertans, and other Canadians, who favour truth over political, correctness. We, however, shall be watching his (Jean’s) actions carefully in the future to ensure that he does not again engage in any left wing shenanigans.

Well I guess Kathleen showed Brian just who wears the pant in Alberta . Sad to see .
I think if you have something to say , then let the person its directed @ hear it loud & clear . Quite often the truth hurts

A LOT has happened in a short while and everyone is still dealing with Ft. Mac, Conservative convention, insanity in Ottawa, insanity at Queen’s Park, insanity at Alberta legislature, insanity around the world. I agree with Derrek , but I really feel a short pause might be necessary to reflect on things and observe in the SHORT term how this plays out. I’m not ready to run away from Brian Jean, but will be observing how things transpire over the coming few weeks. I hope Jean “nuts” up and WR gets their shit TOGETHER because the process to rid us of the NDP scourge has to start NOW. Because the Catcher’s Mitt has left me in such an impoverished condition, Wildrose had better get their shit together if they want any of the few pennies I have left. Political correctness can fuck off for the time being. Wynne and Notely should have been hung by their nipples and publicly flogged in Sir Winston Churchill Square. How stupid are their followers, the path they have us on is suicidal (Venezuela anyone?). And could someone please give douche bag Brian Mason a swift kick in the nuts with a steel toed boot.

The sad aspect to this whole issue is it shows that the Wildrose has accepted the agenda narrative of the left. Their action with respect to Fildebrandt was strictly to appease this narrative. In doing so they have lost their initiative and credibility.

Very well said,Andy. My thoughts exactly.

For what it’s worth… A few days ago I complimented Brian Jean for his apparent honesty during The Rebel interview at the Conservative convention in Vancouver… I don’t mind saying that given recent events vis-a-vis Derek Filderbrandt I may have been wrong… I don’t mind saying that; I’m “a big boy” and can admit making mistakes… And I’m not an Albertan with a clairvoyant insight into what’s really going on… But from here on Vancouver Island, and as a lifetime conservative, I can only say that this apparent fracas may rather be a golden opportunity to really clear the decks in Albertan conservative circles to identify who stands for what and who is merely “playing politics”… “Catcher’s Mitt Notley” has got to go – obviously… But who will really lead the charge for the majority of Albertans is critical in the coming months and years… For what it’s worth…

What the hell do we do now, I am a true conservative and no where to go, I will NOT SUPPORT WR WITH A STUPID, APOLOGETIC LEADER AS BRIAN JEAN, he’s totally screwed up here. Derek Filderbrand is the only one who has the right attitude and fortitude to question Marxist wasteful nutley and her band of insane jerks. Just saying. ..

Briañ Jean is totally wrong and it makes me so mad he apologized in the legislature. What did he apologize for, ndp laughing all the way, what an idiot. I am more sure than ever, Brian Jean is NOT THE RIGHT LEADER AND HE IS THE ONE THAT SHOULD STEP DOWN. DEREK WAS IN THE RIGHT TO CRITICIZE WYNNEBAG.

Just listened to global news in deadmonton and they are continuing to misrepresentation the WR story about Derek Filderbrand. And darry Jan did the exact thing at 6:00pm tonight. What a traiteress bunch. We can’t say or hear the truth anymore in this province nor country.

Oh, these lefties are a fragile lot. I guess the leg and parliament need a trigger warning before starting each day. Kathleen Whine so richly deserves the trouncing that is coming. Even the Eastern Urbo-Weenies have probably had enough. The icing on the cake would be for Whine to be charged as she so richly deserves. Fat chance what with the RCMP in the Liberal bag already.

Brian Jean is an unbelievable twit and the NDP’s enabler.

Time to get rid of him.
commented 2016-05-30 23:37:27 -0400
So now, the Conservatives are stooping down to left wing mentality, if you criticize someone who is gay, never mind that the criticizing is needed & Fildebrandt was absolutely correct in his assessment of Wynnebags’ spending & failing green initiatives, however he must be homophobic to say those words…………absolutely ridiculous. In fact if anything Fildebrandt should have been praised for speaking the truth & in her face not behind her back.
Since when do you get fired for doing your job, is he not the shadow finance minister in his party & is it not his job to critique Notley’s spending as well, which he did link with Wynnebag’s green plan, of course it is. Have we not had enough political correctness from the left to last us a lifetime, now the Conservatives are going to start playing that same little game.
I am starting to get fed up with the whole bunch of them, left & right. I never thought the NDP would be running things in Ab & they are & I never thought the Conservative party would be distancing themselves from some of their values & now they are, so this is getting very frustrating & concerning.

Love what Derek Filderbrand said, 100% correct. Time for Derek to start a true conservative party as was said here. Brian Jean has made many mistakes and I will always remember during the last federal election, he told Albertans to hold their noses and vote for Stephen Harper. I am still ticked at this horrid thing he said, and I called his office as many others did to complain about his damming statement. Then I remember shortly after this disastrous Marxist ndp evil nutley got into power, that on quite a few things Brian Jean was agreeing with nutley. I’m having such a hard time with his leadership, Jean continues to disappoint and I still maintain, he is NOT THE CORRECT LEADER FOR A TRUE CONSERVATIVE PARTY IN Alberta. Just sayin…

Thank you for your service Derek. Perhaps it is time for the grassroots to begin a revolution. No more political correctness. No employment unless capable. Run as an independent and teach the political correct a lesson. Substance over appearance may be old fashioned however what was old may be new again.

Fildebrandt’s censure will damage both the WR and NDP.

The larger scandal is the regressive left and their media enablers are openly trying to censure the proper function of the confrontational adversarial debate protocol of the Westminster parliamentary system.

Effective truthful opposition criticism in the house is like sunlight to vampires for these slimy union racketeers.

Fildebrandt was extremely kind and generous regarding Popcorn salesman lookalike, K Wynne.
If Alberta really knew what so many Ontario residents think of her they would have praised Fildebrandt for his restraint.

This environment tax is complete martial law. Since when does doing your job get you suspended? I wish I had the backbone and the insight to do his job. I wouldn’t apologize to any of those thieves

Bravo to both Frank Adamek and PETER NETTERVILLE

Right-Wing/Conservative parties had better take the White/Male/English/Heterosexual vote seriously as they take the Non-White/Female/French/LGBT vote seriously.

As you would not expect a Non-White/Female/French/LGBT to vote for a party that does nothing when others say nasty things, stereotypes and allows discrimination against them, the same should be expected from the White/Male/English/Heterosexual vote.

Mike Harris got a big majority when he stood up for such people in an election promise to repeal discriminatory employment equity.

Stephen Harper lost because he he lost the White/Male/English/Heterosexual vote because e.g. he increased reverse discrimination with “best fit” = “can you speak French”, gave funding to male bashing Feminist causes etc

Sent this to Brian Jean Flood his email box. Petitions are not enough.
To Brian Jean
I am disheartened to see the Wildrose party become so “politically correct”. Kicking out Derek Fildebrand is a big mistake. He said what was needed to be said. He said it well. He is obviously competent. His apology for the minor gaffe on twitter (or was it on facebook) was accepted by the committee that rules on such matters.

As Trump has shown, the public is sick of political correctness. Wildrose will not gain any points for political correctness.

I would like to congratulate your leadership on another issue. I had been a financial supporter of Wildrose until the “fiscal” conservatives of the party crossed the floor, leaving the “social” conservatives controlling Wildrose. I do not believe that religion (any religion) belongs in politics. Religion is a personal thing and should not be pressed on others. A lesson that Stockwell Day had to learn when several reformers crossed the floor due to religious pressure from Stockwell Day. I am pleased that you have kept some of the more aggressive social conservatives in line. I hope that that will continue.

I was about to resume making financial donations to Wildrose, but now due to this political correctness issue, I shall wait and see.

“I guess you can be punished for being truthful” while the bullying boy blunder gets a media pass for pushing his weight around the HOC, even his supporters are in favor of physical threat to get their way when they blame the whip and the NDP as having deserved it. In light of that, Fildebrandt should get reinstated with a promotion. Now we have to contend with federal Conservative party abandoning conservatives and setting our course to liberal ideology so conservatives will be so much sunnier. I might as well be voting Liberal in 2019 for the first time in 39 years of ballot casting, or maybe elections will be obsolete by that time once the voting system is rigged and we’ll all be Liberals by default. As for the WR in Alberta I know I will not cast a vote for them seeing that they are pandering mamby-pambies too. I am seriously considering moving to Eastern Europe. They get it. Been there, done that!

I cancelled my WildRose membership today and left a message on the WildRose Caucus voicemail specifically for Brian Jean explaining why.

I am truly disappointed in this move. Marilyn is correct, Brian Jean needs to grow a pair and stand up to not only the NDP government, but to the media.

Look , the left wing main stream media is never going to like Conservative. Never, ever. So why pander to their negative reports?

Brian Jean needs to stand up for the party principles and tell the media why they are wrong for denouncing Derek, not appease the media.
