Burnaby “gentrification” protests hijacked by radical socialist activists

Christopher WilsonRebel Commentator

Housing activists and local citizens associations were squatting at a mid-rise building in Burnaby since Saturday until a court order enforced by the RCMP came down telling them to leave.

As of Friday morning no arrests had been made and the squatters were still there.

Yesterday, a group led by Ivan Drury, the Alliance Against Displacement held a press-conference, which I attended.

Local residents are upset that much of the older rental housing in these mid-rises around Burnaby’s Metrotown are being lost and replaced with newer high density buildings but here again we see a protest for regular middle-class and working poor people, hijacked by radical activists who want to see 100% social housing built and paid for by the taxpayer.

Watch as I give you some background on Ivan Drury and show why nothing short of massive taxpayer funded social housing from government will satisfy the radical activists.

This issue isn’t black and white. It’s not as simple as “gentrification is good” and “housing activism is bad”.

We do need to be careful about how much housing we tear down in favour of new high-end condo’s that may inevitably get snapped up and held onto as investment properties for the many thousands of millionaire immigrants we’ve invited into our province over the past ten years but we also need to cast a cynical eye on activists like Ivan Drury.

Derek Harvie……your ignorance is stunning. NO ONE is asking for the government to take care of them…..there ARE people out there who will never, ever be able to afford to buy a home and they have every right to expect decent, affordable housing for their families. They are not asking for something for nothing, they are asking for housing….not slums…..that they can afford on the salaries they make. NOT much to ask for.

While I do not agree with radical socialists…..Canada is a disgrace when it comes to providing affordable, decent homes for people who cannot afford to buy a house….especially in B.C. where the housing is controlled completely by rich Chinese people. Everyone deserves decent housing and it is the government’s moral obligation too ensure families have a decent, affordable place to live. Canada is very neglectful of its poorer people.

I can verify the validity of this story and its accuracy 100%. Well done Chris.
Yes, the resident’s associate are reasonable and regular people… but the occupiers are ultra-left nutcases complete with a black lives matter banner.
Burnaby is the least democratic area of all of Canada… city hall is completely dominated by NDP and without a single opposition member to keep them honest. Last civic election, local citizens formed a party and raised about $20k in donation.. and so did the NDP… but, NDP also got over $400,000 from unions and property developers.. they also received a full campaign crew and infrastructure from the provincial NDP and federal NDP
The mayor, NDP Corrigan is married to NDP MLA madame Corrigan and yes, the local MP is K Stewart NDP… all three levels of government are NDP, 2 of the 3 are in the same family…. and yes, it really sucks to live in a non-democratic area… free and far election?. free yes, but not fair. An effective opposition? … no, there is no opposition. A free press? Only marginally… therefore, it’s very important for Chris and the Rebel to showcase more of the local NDP follies.

Continuing that line of thought, Ontario needs a Wild Trillium Party.

Sounds like B/C needs a Wild Dogwood Party that has the true interests of the electorate at heart. Yep, modelled after the Liberal Democratic Wildrose conservative movement.

Derek Harvie – you could make a lot of money on that sign!

Is anyone ever going to be responsible to take care of themselves anymore?

“Social Housing Now” is what the sign reads. My sign says “grow the fuck up and take care of yourself instead of relying on the government to spoon feed you”
