Lu’lu ‘Mariam’ Habibi, a former Catholic, is an Edmonton resident of Trinidad descent who converted to Islam few years ago following the befriending of local Canadian Moroccans who left an enormous positive impression on her. She launched a YouTube channel and a personal website both dedicated to propagate Islam and dismiss misconceptions about her new faith.
In one of her videos (uploaded to YouTube on August 11, 2014) Lu’lu ‘Mariam’ Habibi explains the meaning of feminism in Islam and thus opening a window to understand what messages converts to Islam are being taught by their mentors. The following are excerpts of the video:
(07:05-09:48) “Feminism in Islam [slide]. When a man gets married his responsibility is so huge, like, when a man gets married, nikah (marriage نكاح), when a man takes a wife, ok, she becomes his responsibility, ok. He is taking on the role of parents, that’s now like her brother, her father, everything. Anything she needs, anything she wants, anything you can imagine, he supports her in every single way.
“We are not talking like, you know, in this day and age [we] got Western society telling you the woman wears the pants now, the women are completely equal and they can do if not more than the men, just as much as the men if not more. This is what they are teaching us these days. And I mean, the feminism and women’s [pause] women have taken women’s rights and just skewed everything and turned it into some kind of like, showboating, “women are boss”, I don’t know what it’s all about.
“But, all I know is, in Islam you, a woman has her role and a man has his role. The same way a woman can bear children, a man can’t. Do you know what I mean? Like, women are, women have their rights and men have their rights. And when you are married, same thing. Husbands have rights over the wife, and the wife has rights over the husband. And, one thing for sure is the man is supposed to lead, the man is the head of the household. In every way, he’s a man. Do you know what I mean? Like, he supports the family. It’s what it’s supposed to be.
“I’m not saying the women can’t work and bring home bread or she can’t be the breadwinner, because as we know, the Prophet’s first wife Khadijah (خديجة), he worked for her, she was the breadwinner in that relationship, he worked for her, let’s remember, she was a business woman. So nobody says you can’t, but in this day and age right now, you have women just taking it too far. Women should know their place.
“Women need to know their place, cause that’s when a lot of fitnah (disharmony, conflict فتنة) gets involved, you know. And we have to remember that men have pride, and we should never try to hurt that pride.”
In another video (uploaded to YouTube on June 4, 2014) Lu’lu ‘Mariam’ Habibi justifies the Islamic Law (Shariah) legalizing polygamy.
On her website, Lu’lu ‘Mariam’ Habibi expresses extreme anti-Israeli positions, deep mistrust of the media and harsh criticism of the ‘misuse’ of freedom of speech in the West to bash Islam. The following are some of her postings:
“Listening to the rift between Netanyahoodie [Netanyahu + yahoodi which means a Jew] and Obomba is like watching a bad movie. It’s all show business and they aren’t fooling me.”
“Benjamonkey [Benjamin + monkey] Netanyahoodi [Netanyahu + yahoodi which means a Jew] is a crackhead. I hope he overdoses on his crack pipe.”
Caption on a Picture of Netanyahu: “Asks for peace, killed more children than Hitler”
“I don’t know who’s committed more war crimes, Obama or Netanyahu, but if I was in charge of the ICC I’d see to it that they both be put in front of a firing squad. Now how’s that for freedom of expression?”
“Call it what it was: A Hate Crime! The facts: An atheist murdered 3 Muslims because of their faith. What they want us to believe: That it was over a parking dispute. My response: F*CK the MEDIA and f*ck you for trying to insult my intelligence..assholes.”
“I’m disgusted by the double standards of the media when it comes to Muslim victims of hate. If it’s one thing I do in this lifetime it will be to spread dawah and expose the media and bigots for the disgusting assholes that they are.”
“What Charlie Hebdo did was a hate crime. Don’t give me that bullsh*t about freedom of expression and they were “just publishing cartoons” crap. What they did was strike believers at the root of their faith by mocking and ridiculing them and just for the record, when any celebrity or publication speak out in any form against gays it’s usually a career ending move-that is unless they publicly offer up profuse apologizes. I’m sick of the double standard bullsh*t. Why is ok as long as it’s bashing or making fun of Muslims? And why are people so damn comfortable with that?”
