Are Canadians REALLY willing to pay a carbon tax at the gas pumps?

Marissa SemkiwRebel Commentator

According to a new survey, the vast majority of Canadians are willing to pay a carbon tax -- as long as they don't have to do it at the gas pumps!

I hit the streets (and the gas stations) to ask average Canadians whether they'd really be willing to pay even more for gas if it would "fight climate change":

I believe that the concerned citizenry must impose a tax on the largest carbon emitting industry in the country: the government industry.
The government industry, with its millions of vehicles, of every shape and size, and hundreds of thousands of energy consuming buildings, and millions of employees, collectively spews carbon at a rate 100 fold of the oil sands.

If we truly care about this country and its future, we must limit the expansion of the government industry. Yes, there will be job losses in the government industry because of the new tax imposed on it by the citizenry, but those employees can get new jobs at carbon friendly occupations, like farming with hand tools, in the tundra. The unemployed government can lead by example, and show the rest of us the way to carbon-free utopia.

I just love the unedited man in the street commentary – give them a question that requires more than a media conditioned reflexive response (actual real reasoning) and watch the zombies blow mindfarts trying to exercise a reasoned answer. Bet they get all their climate news from CBC.

Dana Moore – You’re right. We’ve made many changes to decrease emissions and still the government wants us to give it more money, ostensibly to decrease emissions when in reality a carbon tax won’t do that. That’s because it’s really about getting more money, not about protecting the environment.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the purpose of shutting down our coal-fired hydro plants and setting up the Wonderous Green Energy Act windmills and all (which we are already paying billions for) supposed to drop our emmissions, so someone please explain to me what the purpose of carbon pricing is going to prove, oh yes I forgot just another way to pick our pockets to the point of extinction.

How does paying more for gas, solve climate change? Simply, the poor will all be herded onto transit because they can no longer afford a personal vehicle. They will not be able to afford fresh fruits and vegetables in the winter. Only the rich will be able to afford travel for recreation.
If my gas and electricity jumps from $300 per month to $1500 per month, I will lose my house. If Al Gore’s gas and power jump from $3000 to 15000 per month, he cuts another cheque. Isn’t it funny that some of the Occupy crowd complaining about the disparity between rich and poor are the same ones advocating for changes that will only make life more difficult for the 99 %.

First, it was Global Ice Age is coming..then Al Gore, the idiot and Global Warming and now a carbon tax? Any Canadian saying they want to pay a tax for lining the BRUTAL Wynn Government is just insane, but then again Ontarians voted for her and she is a full blown tax and spend Demoncrat and liar too. She moves power plants at a cost of billions and transfers that debt to our grandchildren at a time when Ontarians are paying the highest electricity rates in Canada… If you sant to kill manufacturing, jobs and the middle class, follow the Wynn-Trudeau-Abama lunacy and vote Lieberal….Time to stop this lunacy and get the Conservatives back into power in Ontario…fiscal responsibility is at an all time low and the McGuilty-Wynn combo are nothing but charlatans foisting stupidity on the sheep-like voters!

No wonder the rest of Canada laughs at Ontario for leading the stupidity category! They voted for the Lieberals!

World Oil Prices are at what right now, 47 bucks per barrel. We are in the Ontario region paying what on average at the Pumps, $1.05 per liter? Roughly speaking of course. When we were at sub $50 bucks per barrel before, we were paying at the Pump 65 cents per liter.
Talk about being hosed! We are paying 40 cents per liter more than we should for the fuel we are pumping.
If the price of World Oil rises, and most certainly it will sometime. Let’s say it goes up to 100 bucks again per barrel, likewise will the cost of Pump Fuel plus government taxation. You see where I’m going with this. The disproportionate cost transfer will escolate incorrectly to a New high price at the pump because the price of fuel didn’t follow the downward trend equally as it rose in the higher cost World Oil Price trend.
People, we are going to get nailed with hyper cost fuel costs, then double whammy hit with Wynne’s Carbon Tax. I forecast that if World Oil rebounds back to $100 bucks, pumping station prices will rise above $1.75 per liter. Because taxation ramps it up disproportionately. Then Wynne will tap on a 10% increase for Carbon Tax. You are now going to see in Ontario gasoline over $2.00 per liter, or pushing British Measure, time 4.546 to convert this to UK Gallons. $10 per Gallon Gas in Ontario.
Now ask yourselves folks. The US is a mear few miles away and fuel is way cheaper at $2.75 per gallon. Are you honestly as border living people going to pay Ontario prices of fuel or travel to the US border towns to gas up on weekends? You tell me?
I will wager, Premier Wynne and her cronies will outlaw gas cans and any sort of containers to be filled from US sources to discourage Ontario consumers from buy cheap gas from the States. If Trudeau gets elected, he too will close the doors for border buyers.
Be careful whom you vote for. cuz these pricks play dirty.

Rick – If they think we’d just hand them control without a huge backlash, they’re seriously mistaken. But that’s why they’re brainwashing and dumbing down our kids; so there’s no backlash. A society of sheep wouldn’t notice what’s going on. The left would defend it and call us names for opposing it. They don’t want to think for themselves; they want someone else to think for them, just like they want someone else to support them.

Taxation of the atmosphere……this is the Promised Land for statists.
It has nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with the promise of comprehensive control.

Dana Moore said: “…it could very well be one more nail the the coffin of our manufacturing sector”
That’s exactly the intent of those trying to foist One World Government on us. The world’s “elites” think they’re smarter than everyone else and can treat us like sheep, and it would seem as though they’re offering plums to politicians who’ll play along.
commented 2015-03-07 14:49:32 -0500
Carbon pricing is a tax on consumpution and has nothing to do with the reduction of emmissions, however it could very well be one more nail the the coffin of our manufacturing sector.

There are two things wrong with the whole man-made global warming scam;
1 – There has been no actual linkage made between Co and warming of the climate, no actual physical / chemical linkage what so ever. In fact the stability / lowering of global temperatures over the last ten years or so may serve to discredit that theory altogether.

2- Size of data sample. Within a time frame of eons, the sampling of data from 100 years, or even 1000 years is irrelevant. A sample this small does not provide even a hint of what a climatic trend might be. At best such a small sample is meaningless. At worst it is a ‘cherry-picked’ tool used by those who wish to support the lie of man-made global warming

The Liberals carbon tax scheme will do nothing to affect the climate, but will do everything to providing them with yet more billions of our dollars so that they can share the wealth with their non-employed supporters and other ignorants.

Valerie, I could not agree more. Climate change is just part of nature. Saying
it is man made is a hoax. Most Canadian politicians do not want to accept science.
Sorry if Iwas unclear.

Im not willing to pay a dime more, enough is enough.Whats next, tax the air i breathe?

Greg Burke – There isn’t any reason for you to pay more! There’s no proof that climate change is occurring and in fact, the opposite is true; climate hasn’t changed in 15 years. We have proof that the climate change crowd manipulated historical data to get the results they wanted so they could extort money from us. If there were any real justice in the world, they would have been charged and jailed. Randomly changing history can’t be legal.
Temperatures go up and down, but that’s called “weather”; it’s not climate. I don’t want to pay any more taxes, especially for something imaginary. This whole issue is and always was utterly ridiculous; the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on Humankind.

Taxing the producers in our economy is nothing more than a hidden tax for everyone. Manufacturers, transportation providers, food producers, most businesses will correspondingly increase their product and services costs to make up for their increased operating costs. Side effect will be that governments will reap even higher taxes all the while claiming they are fighting climate change. I do not want to pay more tax period.
commented 2015-03-06 16:53:44 -0500
Bill Collins – Exactly. Higher trucking costs more to move goods won’t make one iota of difference in the climate because climate on Earth is, always was and always will be, attributable to what happens on the Sun. Nothing we do can change that. People who think otherwise have been brainwashed.

So one guy thinks “the companies that make huge profits” should pay for climate change. Would that guy be okay with those companies cutting salaries and benefits to free up the money to pay? Alternatively, the costs of their products would have to increase and we’d all end up paying more for them. If they did just pay, they’d deduct the amounts they pay off their taxes which means the government would have to tax individuals more to take up the slack. Seriously; do people think things through before they comment on things they clearly don’t understand?

Hey Mark, take it to the absurd reality it leads to: are you willing to die when you can no longer pay for heat?

Some seniors already wear winter coats, hats, gloves inside because they cannot afford soaring prices. It’s pretty grim.

Have you seen the price of bread? It’s tripled and, for really good bread, the price is six times what it was in the past ten years. A head of broccoli was $3.50 last week.

Nuts!

The small example was awesome, yes I will pay a bit more, but not much more. Would you be willing to give up your car and take the bus only? Would you also be willing to have a cap on how much energy you use to heat your house or apt? Are you willing to give up your job?
commented 2015-03-06 14:09:05 -0500
Next time ask the sheep how much more they are willing to pay for everything. A carbon tax will raise the prices of everything. Like the taste of fair trade coffee? It does not magically arrive at Whole Foods. It has to be trucked there. Enjoy fresh fruit at the local grocery store? They don’t grow it on the premises. It has to be trucked there. Every single thing that you purchase will be increased in price without any impact on “climate change”. The only thing that will benefit is government because they have never met a new revenue tool they did not fall in love with.

DOUGLAS MCEWEN – “There’s a gullible sucker born every minute and the “climate change” scam artists know just where to find them. Right here.”

After over 30 years of Liberal Socialist engineering of our society, we can’t expect anything else. Kids have to be de-programmed every day so they don’t fall prey to the brainwashing occurring in school.

The video really shows how people will try to give you the answer thy think you want to hear. What might be an interesting test would to ask people about a tax on fuel after telling them that you are an anti tax group then ask the same question to another group saying you are a pro tax supporter. I would bet yo get two completely different answers from each group. People are sheep, why else do you think people would vote for Trudeau. Certainly can’t be on his policies. He dosent have any.

Global warming/climate change are products of the United Nations dating back to the 1992 Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At this summit, world nations were asked to voluntarily sign on to Agenda 21 whose purpose was sustainable development. In the 23 years since then we have heard nothing but fear-mongering from the special interest groups who have only ONE goal – to take our money and to socially engineer the peoples of the world. I support the control of air pollutants, but FOR THE RIGHT REASONS! Not to feather the nest of the alarmist pseudo-environmentalists such as Al Gore, Suzuki, Greenpeace, etc. I recently read or heard a comment that Obama’s next goal is to become Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2017. Heaven help the world!

In the next segment, Marissa should walk up and down line of cars idling at the Tim Horton’s drive through window, and ask the drivers how much they are willing to pay to fight climate change. After that, she should set up a mike in front of any school, and poll the long line of cars dropping-off kids, how much they are willing to pay to fight climate change.

Shannon Anhalt – Why does my occupation matter in this discussion? I certainly wasn’t defending the higher price of gasoline, only answering the question you posed about the recent hike in gasoline. There is no doubt that it is labour strife in the US Gulf Coast area causing the recent supply shortage of gasoline, which in turn caused prices to rise. Do you remember a hurricane ever causing gasoline prices to spike prior to Katrina? I don’t. Now if someone sneezes in the wrong direction, the price of gasoline jumps because traders fear production could be impacted by sick time. If you think I like paying $1+ per litre, you are mistaken. If the fact that I work in the oil industry makes you believe my opinion is invalid, or that everything I say is oil propaganda and lies, you have bigger problems that paying more for gas.

LOL. Marissa sets up the whole video as if she’s going to expose people’s hypocrisy, and then almost every person said they’d be willing to pay 10% — some, even 20% — more per tank of gas.
