TIFF: Hollywood cowardice comes to Hogtown

David MenziesMission Specialist

The Toronto International Film Festival is back in town.

For the next few days, Toronto will be overrun with celebrities and film buffs as several major motion pictures make their debuts.

In films like Green Room, where the bad guys are neo-Nazis, it's obvious that there's still considerable cowardice in Tinseltown.

We live in a world where the bad guys are all too real and recognizable, but I can't help but notice that cinematic terrorists can be anybody except the ones that exist in the real world -- i.e. Muslim jihadists.

Rather than having films grounded in relevance and geo-political reality, expect to be greeted by swastikas and Confederate flags when it comes to bad guys.

jimmy da silva do you know how to keep an asshole in suspense?

Prince,

It was not meant to be a documentary and any changes that were made were done for dramatic effect and not due to some liberal agenda. Remember – Clint Eastwood is a Republican, so your entire position is moot here.

Prince,
The movie had his wife’s full approval. If there was a problem, she was in the position to correct it.
Prince Knight commented 17 hours ago
Read that book, da Silva. Hollywood couldn’t even get that correct.
Jimmy Da Silva commented 18 hours ago
Prince,
Except American Sniper…right?

da Silva: Yes, Hollywood had the wife’s approval. Did you watch any of the “behind the scenes” extras in that movie? Did you watch how Hollywood had to make some changes theatrically, and explain it to her to get her approval? In other words, they deviated from the book. Yes, they got her input, and yes, they “stayed true to the spirit of the book”, but the still changed things and DID add some extra dramatic material. This was not a factual documentary, which would have maintained utmost accuracy. The wife DID correct some minor issues, but still agreed to the deviations — and thus incaccuracies (lies).

This is true of many movies — based on fact, “inspired by actual events”, and outright fiction. Even the blockbuster Hunger Games series is adapted from the novels — with the author’s permission. And I understand why, from a filmmaking perspective. The end result is STILL not the absolute truth… just “as close as they can get with marketability”. (Read THAT series — President Snow hardly has the appearances on paper that he does on film!)

Hollywood is fantasy — stories and people, actors and crew. Watch their lives — they don’t know how to cope with “reality”. Even “reality tv” is the furthest thing from reality.

(Hell, even the smash “The Blind Side”, which is based on fact, got criticised by the person who made the backbone of the story — he said that, because of that movie, it put unrealistic expectations on him as a pro-NFL player, from people who’d seen the movie.)

Hollywood doesn’t do reality, because the only way to portray reality is in a documentary, and those are hardly entertaining…

Dan,

The television industry haven’t missed you. The programs that you don’t want to watch already have many millions of people watching, because that is the programming they want.

The book by Ben Shapiro that LLRFU mentions sounds like a great read – and I haven’t watched TV for decades – check out this short interview with Shapiro:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzlrTsAd590
(Shapiro is that skinny little Jew from Harvard Law with the Big brain, who was physically assaulted and threatened by that big ugly freak in the dress ON camera, on TV)
Even though “Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television” by Jerry Mander was published in 1978, it is still as fascinating and frighteningly pertinent today as it was then, especially in light of the point The Menzoid’s making! See this short clip of Mander, years later:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3NBEurnIqY
If you are still participating in ‘TV programming’, you need to read Mander’s book!

You are absolutely right Terry.

In regards to this Green Room movie – it would seem pretty odd to me to have someone from Isis locked in the room with a punk rock band.

A couple of comments to add to Jimmy’s.
a) Hollywood makes movies that put the largest numbers possible of butts in seats. Film studios are businesses, and films are product. You will note that there are fashions in “bad guys” – people you’re allowed to pick on because pretty much everybody hates them. It was South Africans for a few years. It’s been North Koreans and Albanians. Russians are always good villains, but Nazis are the best. If you’re investing 25 million bucks in a project, why would you deliberately build in characters or imagery that would limit your domestic and overseas sales?
b) American Sniper. Argo. Body of Lies. Team America. The Dictator. Persepolis. The Kingdom. Etc., etc., etc.

LLRFU,

I have read Ben Shapiro’s book and it was laughable – but I can see why you love it.

The bottom line is this – if conservative/religious programming was actually popular – it would continue to be made. Money talks in Hollywood and they would make a thousand conservative movies and TV shows tomorrow if that is what people wanted to watch.

But the box office and TV ratings have a much different story to tell and that’s why the most popular shows and movies are not the kinds of things that strong conservatives and religious people would watch.

If Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas movie set the box office on fire and was actually good on some level, movie studios would be wanting to get into bed with Kirk Cameron and make a slew of movies with him. That’s the problem with conservative and religious content – it often doesn’t do well, but even beyond that – they are typically horrible from a creative and filmmaking standpoint.

No matter your political stance, people don’t want to watch some tossed together piece of shit with bad acting, bad direction and terrible production values. I just described most conservative and religious movies and TV shows.

Brian: " I cannot tell the difference between a law abiding Muslim or terrorist, just like I cannot tell the difference between a serial killer and a law abiding citizen."
Excellent point. So you probably don’t treat all citizens as serial killers, because most of them aren’t. You probably use your own judgement, based on observation, context, and experience. So if a Muslim is, let’s say, a respected third generation Canadian ex-cop with a strong record of community service, you’d probably accept him as a political candidate, right?

Rudden you can’t even come up with your own lines moron. Take Brinkman and run along.

Charleton, you tend to get a little confused when pressed to continue a thought over more than one comment. You’re now confirming what you initially tried to deny. Seek help.

There’s more fiction coming out of The Rebel Media than from Hollywood – Today’s published Editorial Cartoon best reflects what Commander Ezra Levant and his The Rebel Media staff are all about…

Brian Kelly you are absolutely correct. Muslims have clearly stated they would use our freedoms to destroy us . They use constitutions, law fare to destroy our society. Lying to defeat Islam’s enemies is acceptable.

Rudden Funny Brian Kelly quotes you perfectly. I read very well . Rambling on about what I already know as an avid Jihadwatch supporter I’m very aware of the Muslim agenda. I’m also acutely aware of their methods of destroying out freedoms. They despise our life style.

You don’t read very well, do you, Charleton?
“If your allegiance is to Islam first, how can Canada be served.” " They don’t want to assimilate( no it actually is not a bad word). They feel they have superiority over us, and we are beneath them, infidels. They want to use and discard us, kill us. They want to take over our free country, and run it with Sharia law. Some may call that Islamaphobia, I call it a rational fear. Only stupid and shortly taken over or dead people ignore rational fear." Liza Rosie
“No Muslim should be allowed to sit in Parliament. They have their own agenda and it is not a nice one. This even at the cost of losing a PC seat.” Keith Barnes
etc, etc…

Terry Rudden says – I’d say yeah, some folks ARE “too damn stupid to realize the difference between a law abiding Muslim citizen and a Jihadi terrorist. As a veteran I have seen first hand the wolves in sheep clothing, I cannot tell the difference between a law abiding Muslim or terrorist, just like I cannot tell the difference between a serial killer and a law abiding citizen. Terrorists blend into society in order to carry out terrorist attacks which have happened all over the world. So Terry, if you can tell the difference just by looking at them then you should be hired by the intelligence community because you are the only one in the world that can just tell by looking at someone if they are a terrorist or not.

Great video Menzies. How true!

Rudden, you are confused. Tjat was lefties like you accusing us of not voting for Muslim candidates. Oh well you are starring in your own agenda movie.

“perverse agenda”. Good term. I see Jimmy’s here demonstrating Lefty Psychosis with his perverse agenda for us – great job Jimmy!! Is it TIDES you’re with? Prime Time Propaganda is a great book well worth reading. Except you Jimmy – lefty’s don’t read books, they only criticize them without even reading them. Go ahead Jimmy – tell us all that’s wrong with that book (that you haven’t read). Give us some more Lefty Psychosis . . . . . .
So Jimmy – did you learn anything from this video? You didn’t did you? You’re “incapable of learning”, aren’t you?
Gotta love that Lefty Psychosis!!

“Is it because movie studios think moviegoers are too damn stupid to realize the difference between a law abiding Muslim citizen and a Jihadi terrorist?”
LOL. Well, a number of readers here argued told me two weeks ago that Canadians should NOT vote for Conservative candidates who are Muslim, I’d say yeah, some folks ARE “too damn stupid to realize the difference between a law abiding Muslim citizen and a Jihadi terrorist.”

Um, considering the plot of this particular movie – why would ISIS be the villain here? And newsflash – white racist Americans kill people.

This reminds me of the 80’s and 90’s when Muslims and other non-white-non-Americans used to complain that they were always featured in Stallone and Schwarzenegger movies as the villain.

Nothing in Hollywood is real — not the plot lines, not the action, not the actors, not the directors, not the producers… Even the “based on fact” is really not factual.

Are we surprised that this unreality doesn’t want to face reality?
