CRAP! Calgary's Nenshi wastes $236,000 on sewage treatment "art"

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

You’ve heard the phrase, "That’s just flushing money down the toilet."

It’s a metaphor for wasting money, but nobody actually thinks you’re throwing real money down the sewer — it’s just a saying, right?

Well, Calgary’s big-spending mayor Naheed Nenshi has achieved another milestone in his illustrious career:

He just spent $236,000 dollars of taxpayers money on public “art” at a sewage treatment plant.

In the middle of a recession, with 40,000 people in the oil patch losing their jobs so far this year, he spent a quarter of a million dollars lighting up a sewage pump.

These are recession and unemployment times in Alberta.

But Nenshi want's to prove he’s a world class mayor with world class urban art — paid for by taxpayers.

Alberta’s NDP is using a fake "public survey" to push climate change policy.

Say you have epilepsy, and the lights sent you into an epileptic fit. Sue!
Have you seen the toilet roll on three sticks in Canmore by the river? Its pretty horrific also. Wasn’t quite so expensive though.

Have all the leaders in Alberta lost their marbles? Same lame brain mentality that liberal socialists seem to possess. People losing their jobs & scared for the future, oh but not to to worry, Nenshi is here. If you consider that to be “art” then “I can walk on water”. How do these people get elected I ask…….by the same lame brain liberal socialists is a good guess.

People of that city elected him. They get what they deserve. Albertans elected NDP, they get what they deserve. Greece continues to elect socialist leaders, and their come-uppance has arrived in the form of austerity. Socialism starves the people the world over and yet the ignorant lazy people continue to elect them. Let’s make a new nation of conservative capitalists. The world population would be the new nations slave population. One nation to rule the worlds inept, ignorant, weak, and naive. Which nation will it be?

I remember when we (the taxpayers) bought a red circle for a cool 1 million, it created such a fuss for a while but to prove their dominance over the foolish tax payers a few weeks later the national gallery bought another ridiculous painting for 2 million and it barely made the news

No one from the city consulted with us in the neighbourhood about this peice of fArt. I think it’s atrocious what they can do. what once was a beautiful view outside my front window is now a big black box with a chain link fence surrounding it. And some led lighting on the side turns this into a masterpiece? I really appreciate art but this seriously is a joke and has caused our property value to go down. Would you like to see this in front of your house?

who goes to a sewage treatment plant to see art ? just another stellar example from the people who brought the 400 000 dollar blue hoop, another huge waste of money

I don’t object to public art. I object to political activists stealing the art profession and using it to promote a political agenda.

Poop pump art !! Wow, nice to see Calgary becoming a leader in shit innovation. I hope other Canadian cities take as much pride in their sewer systems and hopefully they can “art” them up for a "turd"of the cost.

I don’t envy ANY politician of any political stripe in trying to justify spending tax money on “art”. After all, most such art is the subject of ridicule at some point by some of the same taxpayers who had their pockets picked to make that art. For instance, I remember getting a bus tour of Berlin where various public buildings and public art was shown to us. I remember a building that might have been an opera house which the Berliners called “Jimmy Carter’s smile” as well. There was a downtown fountain that locals called “the meatball” (or something like that); it really does look like a brown meatball spewing out water. The tour guide described these names as Berliner’s unique sense of humour; I’m really not sure if they were meant in a good-natured way or if they really DID hate these public facilities/art.

Basically, everyone knows what they like and everyone feels free to trash what they don’t know or understand . That’s basic human nature. And there will always be taxpayers who say this or that item should NEVER have been funded.

Frankly, I’m inclined to think governments should stay away from paying for art. Instead, let the local citizens get together and figure out what they’d like and where they’d like to put it. Then, figure out who to hire to make the art and raise the necessary money by voluntary subscriptions. Some people will still complain but at least there won’t be any taxpayers grousing about a misuse of their tax money.

Just another piece of shitty “art” expensed to the City of Calgary taxpayer at a time when they can least afford it. BTW Nenshi thinks he’s doing Calgarians a favour by only raising taxes by 3 1/2 % this year.

NEWS FLASH!!!! This project was designed and started while Calgary was in a BOOM..
Secondly the Lift Station is not part of the treatment process.
Furthermore it is in the better interest of citizens to know what happens, how it works, than to believe its hockus pokus magic.
If you truly understood the cost of building the lift station, let alone the efforts that go into operating and maintaining the station. You would be singing a much quieter tune about the minor amount of artwork. Better yet lets just not upgrade the facility and leave it operating in a design capacity from the 50’s. That capacity is substantially smaller than the volume of output from the same citizens it serves output. Perhaps you should raise concern about the volume of wasted water or what chemicals and substances are being flushed down the same lines. Educate the citizenry on what impact they have… Oh wait you would rather not let them know and keep them in the black… OK

In a previous life, I was a sales engineer of environmental equipment, and that included sewage treatment equipment for the City of Calgary. In that capacity, we had a couple of popular sayings for our occupation: (1) “It may be shzt to you, but it’s my bread and butter”, or (2) “You eat it, we treat it”. Looks like this business has expanded into Arts community.
Recently, I wrote a letter to the editor of the Calgary Herald, and said in part:
“What our fossil fuel industries do, is to take crude oil, or oil sands, which come out of the ground dirty, clean it by way of the refining process, and sell it for a reasonable price, to serve a useful purpose. In contrast, what our neighbours to the south do, -particularly the producers in Hollywood-, is to take sex, which starts out clean, pollute it, and then sell it throughout the world at an exorbitant price, which serves no useful purpose. I hereby submit that ‘mind pollution’ in the world is a much more serious problem than is ‘environmental pollution’.”

Doug, I doubt any of those people you quoted had the idea of art on a sewage treatment plant in mind .. or in the case of some of those oldies you quoted, “on the side of an outhouse”.

Mike said, “A laser-illuminated shit-pump is not on the free public’s list of objets d’art, for the most part.”

And especially not for $236,000.

BRINKMAN; What do you see, when You look in to a mirror? An introverted anti social, shy, full of hate loner, who prefers masturbation rather than a sex partner. You only feel brave and able to espouse your Double Speak, when you sit, alone, behind the security of your Monitor. This description of you was gleaned from an Australian TV Debate, entitled “Trolls”

Someone remarked: “we need art, but not everyone will like it”

Yes. We need art. What we don’t need is some committee deciding WHICH art. A laser-illuminated shit-pump is not on the free public’s list of objets d’art, for the most part.

Richard (a.k.a. Doug) Brinkman said, "the world is changeable Peter… For The Better! "

Yea, okay. You have a nice day now. People, just back away slowly. No sudden moves. Don’t break eye contact and you’ll be okay.

Sewage disguised as art – A perfect metaphor of Nenshi’s politics – and a reminder why he will not be reelected.
commented 2015-09-26 13:29:13 -0400
I said when this fool was elected that Calgarians would regret it. They were totally foolish to elect a fool and now they have him! What can they say?
This Jew hating, taxpayer ignoring, left-wing dumbcoff will run Calgary right into the poor house if the taxpayers do not begin to revolt and tell him to “STOP IT ALREADY!” Probably he would try not to listen. After all he doesn’t really care about his excess during recession with people out of work. He will still demand their money so that he can waste it while putting them in welfare!

Richard Brinkman says, “In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay.”

I’m glad he is on board that Alberta’s society is in decay now that the N.D.P. is in power. It takes a lot to admit they were wrong.

It’s said that you can’t judge a book from its cover but in the case of Naheed Nenshi it is clear that he is as slimy on the inside as he’s creepy exterior. The guy gives me the willies .
commented 2015-09-26 11:21:56 -0400
So then, Doug, you are saying by posting that quote from Ernst Fischer that displaying “art” at a sewage treatment plant is “show[ing] the world as changeable”?
commented 2015-09-26 11:15:18 -0400
Maybe Nenshi missed his calling as a curator of some gallery, he certainly has the obnoxious, stomach curdling art speak down pat.
I am sure people are just thrilled! Everyone knows this is more important than food on the table. It feeds the soul.
He’s got one thing right putting it on the side of a building that deals with sht.
