Public health trumps choice? Liberal Health Minister’s tobacco strategy exposes nanny state extremism

Brian LilleyRebel Co-Founder

The latest move from the federal government to put further restrictions on cigarette packaging should concern Canadians whether you smoke or not because it speaks to a broader issue of the desire to control individual choices of Canadians.

Recent comments made by Health Minister, Jane Philpott show that she’s convinced that plain packaging is the way to go, industry concerns be damned. So much for intellectual property rights.

We already have huge restrictions on cigarette packaging on packages that no one can see anyway since stores are required to keep them hidden from public view lest children be tempted.

Whether you smoke or not, you’ll want to consider the points I make in this commentary about what the Liberals will do next.

They are making it clear that they intend to take their nanny state attitude to the extreme and will use the courts to make it happen.

Is this the role of the federal government? Is this the role of any government?

You don’t have to be a smoker to know that what they’re doing here is wrong.

“Tobacco companies are evil. There should absolutely be warnings on the packages. The real issue is where to draw the line. We do not need sugar to have a warning. The difference is, tobacco is addictive and harms people. I do believe we should be given a warning before we watch the mainstream Canadian news. Viewers need to be told of the extreme left slant.”

You are missing the point Anonymous. For years the public has been warned about junk food, alcohol, and tobacco. They crossed the line years ago with tobacco, now they crossed into outright totalitarianism, plain and simple, this is not nanny state trivialities that we are speaking of.

- No longer do the packages of cigarettes clearly state the tar and nicotine amounts, only that they are harmful with usually misleading photos. Thus, they actually removed information for consumer knowledge. There are two photos (toilet, mouth), if you do the research you will find that is more representative of urine from advanced liver disease from alcoholism and the other from a venereal disease.
- Tobacco products are hidden from view in a standard locked grey cupboard, they claim to it is to protect children though it also restricts consumer knowledge and choice.

We have been warned about junk food and alcohol as well but those lack the gross labels that tobacco has on the packaging, next step will be to add the gross labels to other products. Restaurants must list fat and calorie counts and think of the ingredient labels on all packaged foods. These Nazis simply want to control everything, now hypocritically they are notching up their game which was beyond offensive to begin with. They, very people that condemn smoking tobacco, are pushing for legalization of a drug (marijuana) that will be just as if not more destructive than tobacco because it can cause schizophrenia in some people. Marijuana has similar problems associated with tobacco though this fact is constantly misconstrued intentionally – lung disease, second hand smoke, etc..

“The difference is, tobacco is addictive and harms people.”
People become addicted to many things, not just tobacco, that can become harmful if overly indulged in. Alcohol, tea, coffee, sugar, fats in processed foods. What about the caffeine from the cocoa and sugar in a chocolate bar, the fat and salt in a bag of chips? Some people can’t pass a Timmies without popping in for a coffee and a muffin. What about alcohol? Where are the gross labels for alcohol? Being a nondrinker I could go off the deep end and claim it is “evil” as you said about tobacco and its manufacturers, could point out the many “evils” of drink but what’s the point? Most people know, its restricted legally to 18+, they are adults that can make their own decisions regarding to imbibe or not, they do not need their hand to be held like a small child.

The only point I agree with in your posting on was “Viewers need to be told of the extreme left slant.”

I am totally addicted to nicotine. Where’s my free safe nicotine stations ? Not sure when it disappeared but there was a time when the tar and nicotine content was on the package. I remember going to a store and asking if I could look at some alternatives that had a lower tar content. Sorry, mother government does not allow you to see cigarettes.
Still see 14 year olds sneaking butts in the back alleys.
So glad the government regulates my life.

What is strange about all of this is that it was not too long ago that smoking was part of the Left’s culture.

“… i think its something the liberals did not give enough thought about and what is involved…”

Just as there are drunk drivers that cause car accidents so too will there be an increase in accidents due to being stoned while driving. Smoking a cigarette while driving does NOT interfere with your motor skills or driving ability, but both pot and alcohol does. If they think people are vocal about second hand cigarette smoke wait until the issue becomes about second hand pot smoke. They cannot have two sets of laws – the same smoking laws must apply to pot smokers as cigarette smokers. Variety store robberies will increase once they start carrying packages of pot. Not to mention added litter on sidewalks and building entryways. Businesses will have to deal with more problems regarding employees, being drunk is unacceptable in the work place do they seriously think being stoned will be tolerated? The same claim that is made against cigarette smokers will eventually surface – pot smokers will cost millions of dollars each year in added health care cost!!!
Actually it will cost more because smoking cigarettes is not linked to mental illness but marijuana is.

“Researchers have found the first evidence that marijuana can cause genetic abnormalities associated with the mental illness, which affects about one in every 100 people.”

Medical marijuana, same as prescription drugs, has been available for years and is treated in a similar fashion, what Junior promised to the airheads was basically instead of illegally buying it from a dealer they could just pop into their local variety store and legally buy their baggie. But did they think the rest out – of course not, thinking is not the Liberal way.

All this on tobacco smoking, but the Lib’s are going to make Pot legal, just blows the mind. Any foreign substance in the body is going to cause ill health.

This whole smoking thing makes me laugh and its just the anti smoke idiots who are fixated on stamping out smoking.
I smoked for 56 years, i probably smoked a lot longer because of those anti smoke idiots, it became them against us with their heavy handed tactics and the more they tried to stamp it out the more i would not quit.
But after 56 years i thought it time , so i quite.,i just decided one Sunday, i made a deal with myself to quit, i left the package in plain view on the cupboard and if i wanted one it was there,i did not have another and after a year removed the package
Its been 3 years now.

The lies they have told is criminal,
In a shop close by there is a sign saying 1 of 2 smokers dies from smoking.
If that is so then there must have been mass deaths in 20s,30s,40s,50s,60s 70s, everyone smoked in the 20s, 30, 40s ,50, 60, and probably started thinning out from there.
Hospitals must have been bulging at the seams from smokers dying, but we know that is not so.
Everet Koops the surgeon General in the US decades ago threw out figures regarding deaths from smoking and when challenged on the false figure he said the ends justifies the means

So the anti smoking morons are still at it but strangely quiet when it comes to weed, you would think they would be loudly protesting it and the health effects from smoking weed, surely they don’t think there are no health hazards from smoking weed, or do they intend to turn a blind eye like they do with the health effects and ruined lives caused by alcohol.
I always wondered where they would get their taxes from if smoking was eliminated, now we know,it carries on with pot.
But then again if they legalize weed remains to be seen, i think its something the liberals did not give enough thought about and what is involved ,it would not surprise me if they back out of that election promise too

Canadian Mongrel – this is all for the Islamization of Canada, under Hehr Trudeau. Once the masses finally catch on, Trudie had better run and hide in his safe spot. It will likely be in a closet, which is where that cowardly traitor belongs!

And Justin Trudeau wants to legalize marijuana?

Jane Philpott said this was the valuable session she had at the World Health Assembly in Europe. I wonder how much her attendance there cost the tax payers? $10 000, $25 000, $50 000? Being a minister in the Liberal Party of Corruption government, it certainly would not have been the $2000 to $5000 peons would pay.

Personally, I don’t think that public health gave a copulated rodents backside about the hazards of smoking. The way SJW campaigns are proceeding, they are using the war on tobacco as the template, and I think that is all that war was about, to test whether it can be done. Otherwise, we would not have the war to legalize marijuana. The same template is being used in the socialist science of the war on carbon. So Mr. Lilley is correct, the template will be used for other aspects of life.

Regressive socialists want to destroy anything that brings comfort to the masses.

In light of this proposal I think all branding should be removed from political campaigns, so we have candidate A1, candidate A2, candidate A3 amd candidate A4, No party affiliation, no pictures of nice hair, just platforms.

But smoking pot, well that’s just fine.

Line up and die Canadian healthcare.
