Dr. Lee: "We're incentivizing companies to leave Ontario"

Marissa SemkiwRebel Commentator

I sit down with Professor Ian Lee, Professor of Economics at the Sprott School of Business to discuss alarming reports that are predicting massive business failures in Ontario over the next few years.

With lower productivity and higher costs (particularly electricity) Ontario businesses have been operating at a competitive disadvantage. The gap only widens as Wynne remains committed to pursuing ideologically based policies instead of pursuing policies that will help our businesses become competitive again. Listen as Dr. Lee explains how we are effectively incentivizing companies to leave Ontario.

On another blog, a commenter said that Ontario suffered from a case of Green Derangement Syndrome.

I counter that it is Greed Derangement Syndrome – which manifests as (please excuse the shameless double entendre) Power at any Cost.

”never eat at a diner named “Mom’s”: and never trust a man who uses the word “incentivizing”.
Another case of shoot the messenger.

This is really bad for Ontario in the long term. They may at some future date resolve their political problems causing the self-imposed economic recession, but lean times are good times for building cartels and oligopolies – as competition dissolves only the largest politically connected companies/corporations survive to form captive markets. Consumer loss big time.

Dr. Lee talks of Wynne’s “ideological agenda…have used the Ontario hydro system as a social laboratory experiment for their ideology”. There has been some quibbling about Lee’s use of a word “incentivizing”. I would suggest that Dr. Lee call it what it is, “socialist engineering”; no need to invent a new word here.

Wynne’s buddies are getting rich on the backs of we the tax payers, who do you think is benefiting from the free flow of our money into
the subsidies that have been set up for her “green energy” BS and by the way I did not vote for these bozoes….Dr. Lee is telling it like it is,
too bad some people can’t see that.

I previously didn’t think it was possible to surpass the truly astounding level of corruption and incompetence of the Dalton McGinty government in a country like Canada, but I was wrong. The Kathleen Wynne Liberal government of Ontario is the most astonishingly corrupt, incompetent regime ever to govern a North American jurisdiction.

Marissa, Dr. Lee, I’ve been following your reporting for years. Those of us who have, have seen this coming.
I think Fraser McBurney said it very well, and best.

Sorry, Eileen, but I have to side with PK on this one. Never play poker with a man named “Doc”; never eat at a diner named “Mom’s”: and never trust a man who uses the word “incentivizing”.

I went onto the Elections Ontario website, to check on donations flowing into the Ontario Liberal party. What amazed me was the thousands of dollars coming from both the unions and “professional organizations”. The corrupt Wynne government undertakes policies to please her donation-paying cronies. Her policies do little to help the Ontario economy. It is one big, corrupt world in Ontario. — David Murrell, dmurrell@unb.ca

Unifor and the highest electricity rates in North America!!!! And Mulcair is blaming Harper for manufacturing job losses.

Sometimes our vocabulary requires one to create “new” words to describe a situation that has never previously existed. So, in this particular situation, I think the word “incentivizing” is an appropriate choice. You can look at it either way: this debt-ridden Liberal government is providing “incentives” to green energy companies which is resulting in the drastic increase in our electricity costs, which in turn is impacting businesses in Ontario.

Or, you can approach it from a negative viewpoint: the “Wynde-Ontariowe” government with its push for green energy is providing incentives for Ontario businesses to pull up stake in the province and relocate where overhead costs are much cheaper. Either way, the ordinary citizen is losing big time.

she has support because she promotes her climate change agenda…thus convincing her minions that we can make a difference and the reality she is …difference being your cost for energy goes higher and your tax go higher…

Linda that would not balance the windmill , they have three blades. How about Gore and Suzuki to round things out. You guys in Ontario really need a revolution. I hope there’s one in Alberta before its too late. GO HARD HAT REBELLION 2015-2016

Windmills and solar are sucking tax payers dry with the subsidies they require.
Perhaps Wynne should strap herself to a windmill and go for a spin. She can do a head count on the number of birds and butterflys sliced and diced by the blades.

It’s not all gloom and doom. Just look at all the names on the sunshine list that work for the various government, union hydro “companies” . At least they can afford the increased rates. Energy poverty for us, “sunshine” for them. The time for torches and pitchforks has come! The path this government is taking us down leads only to an Orwellian nightmare. When the effects of the “koolaid” have worn off, the “useful idiots” who have continuously voted in the most inept, corrupt, lying, thieving government in the history of this young nation will be the ones crying the loudest. I will gladly wipe their tears away, with my fist.

How many times can we comment on this corrupt lie-beral government. They have been in power since 2003 the electric rates have increased 3 fold to the highest in North America We’ve seen this province come from a have province to a have not province. We’ve seen our credit rating go from AAA+ to A+ this costs us tax payer’s to pay more for the over spending of this government. They have lost the moral will to govern with their hated sex education. We have seen drug abuse spread. We have seen our freedom of speech attacked and we have seen the blowing up of our civil service. And we can thank it all to the city of Toronto and Ottawa. What has happened to responsible government I hope the next time the conservatives get in they do some house cleaning and if they don’t then kick them out

It amazes me how the labour unions throw their support behind this Liberal government who in turn is chasing away all their jobs with the many businesses that are pulling up their stakes and leaving for greener pastures south of the border.
commented 2015-07-09 16:59:49 -0400
Ontario Hydro sells excess electricity (yes, the nukes over produce) to the US border states and they do it at cost or by paying the US party to take excess (can’t turn nukes on and off like you can natgas/coal).

High electricity rates in Ontario are used to pay off BIG FAT FKG GUBBAMINT DEBT!!! There is no shortage of electricity. In fact, there is a glut of electricity in Ontario, but you wouldn’t know it by reading it in the MSM.

And this is what you stupid people of Ontario voted in – PIG FKG WYNNE stealing you blind like PIG MCGUINTY and you just sit there and take it like the stupid people that you are.

“Incentivising”? Is that even a word?

But of course business is going to go where costs are low… or, at least, low*er*… Why should any company take on such high operating costs? Companies will go where costs are low, taxes are low, and unemployment is relatively high. That’s the best of all worlds.

Too bad the Ontario Liberal ideology is firmly stuck in never-never land…
