Even some Liberals agree: Forcing constitutional change without holding a referendum is just wrong

Brian LilleyRebel Co-Founder

Over the Christmas break while people were rightly thinking about anything but politics and news, the story of democratic reform broke as the Trudeau Liberals doubled down on their promise to change our voting system without a referendum.

We immediately launched a petition at LetUsVote.ca and you responded. So far, nearly 10,000 people have signed, which is amazing, but we need it to be bigger.

We need it to be 50,000 or more Canadians telling the government that we demand a vote before the electoral system is changed.

This isn’t just me at the Rebel saying this and it’s not a left or right issue, or a conservative vs liberal issue but about democracy.

In the last week we've heard from long-time Liberals like Ujjal Dosanjh, Gordon Gibson and Warren Kinsella who all recognize the fundamental problem with changing the voting system without a referendum or a unanimous vote in Parliament.

The Trudeau government is calling this democratic reform but it seems they want to skip the democratic part of it. We need to tell them “NO” and demand that voters have an opportunity to have their say.

Whether you support changing the electoral system or keeping it the way it is, the people of Canada should get to vote on any changes.

If you have already signed the petition, thank you. If you have not please sign it now at LetUsVote.ca.

We need 50 thousand or more to sign on to this petition so we need you to share this petition, share the page at LetUsVote.ca with five of your friends by email, share this on Facebook, on Twitter, tell your friends about it over a coffee or beer.

Those that want democratic reform without having a democratic vote are already organizing. Lead Now is pushing for this to go through as is. But a vague promise for some kind of change, a short line in an election platform in an election the winning party took with just 39 percent of the vote is not a mandate for change.

Help spread the word to as many Canadians as you can.

Message to Justin:
“…“The principal aim of society is to protect individuals, in the enjoyment of those
absolute rights, which were vested in them by the immutable laws of nature;
but which could not be preserved, in peace, without that mutual assistance,
and intercourse, which is gained by the institution of friendly and social
communities. Hence it follows, that the first and primary end of human laws,
is to maintain and regulate these absolute rights of individuals.” Blackstone.
If we examine the pretensions of parliament, by this criterion, which is evidently,
a good one, we shall, presently detect their injustice. First, they are subversive
of our natural liberty, because an authority is assumed over us, which we by
no means assent to. And secondly, they divest us of that moral security, for our
lives and properties, which we are entitled to, and which it is the primary end
of society to bestow. For such security can never exist, while we have no part
in making the laws, that are to bind us; and while it may be the interest of our
uncontrolled legislators to oppress us as much as possible…”

Where are the cries of “dictator” the accusations of “control freak”, the pious proclamations that we are a democracy and will not stand for this from the media? I have had it! I will not support in any fashion what so ever, any of the MSM, and I will take it a step further. I will now boycott all major and minor advertisers that appear on any MSM site. I will be drafting a form letter that I will send to these companies, letting them know how angry and frustrated I am, and that I will not do business with them and why! It’s time to step it up and hit them where it hurts!

Trudeau is a dictator like his father was, that is how he was raised and that is why he likes China because of their dictatorship, Trudeau’s words not mine.

Good to see that there are some sane Liberals out there. I wonder how much longer until Trudeau clamps down on them.

Too funny. As long as you are visiting the Chicken Packer you might want to take a couple dozen eggs. You might need them!

If JT changed his hair do to that of the North Korean dictator then maybe the dumb asses that voted for him would actually realize his true goals for this country.

The dictator (admirer of Communist dictatorships) is exerting his influence! An important sign for what the future brings! The Communists in Leadnow and other groups see an opportunity to suppress the Canadian public!

Why are we so hung up on the idea of a referendum as being the only element required for change? Do we or do we not now have a written constitution, known as The Constitution Act of 1982, and does not that act stipulate that any change to the constitution, such as in the way we elect our representatives to parliament, must be done through an amendment formula (7/50) which ensures that change is done with the agreement of a majority of Canadians?

In BC, we had a referendum a number of years ago on this issue. Premier (at the time) Campbell struck a citizens commission on electoral reform to study the issue. This commission ended up recommending a transferable ballot type of system. But, the key is we the people had an opportunity to give the idea a thumbs up, or thumbs down. We ultimately kicked the idea to the curb (thankfully), and retain the first past the post system to this day.

My point being, such a fundamental change to the electoral system MUST be put to some sort of plebiscite or referendum so the people can have their say. Junior and his band of merry men may have made some vague promises on electoral reform during the election campaign, but to my knowledge no specifics were ever laid out, and they therefore have no mandate to act unilaterally on the issue. Having a single party, one that only attained ~39.5% of the popular vote at that, decide on the issue is decidedly undemocratic. Junior and company, one would hope, would reap holy hell if they tried to do so.

The empty-headed dictator thinks he can do whatever he wants to, with no repercussions. Let’s make sure he feels the wrath of the people that he is trying to corner with his BS.

I reject the mob rule philosophy of proportional representation. What our founders handed us from Westminster is a good system.
