Ezra Levant: CBC wasting your money on "tabloid TV" that "mocks the United States"

Rebel Staff

Why did the CBC waste your tax dollars buying the rights to an American documentary about a billionaire couple building their over-sized dream house?

You won't believe the other documentaries scheduled to air on The Passionate Eye -- none of which contain a hint of Canadian content.

In fact, all these programs seem to have in common is that they mock other countries (particularly America) and cast them in an unflattering light.

In an era when viewers can easily get lots of good (and bad) TV for free or on Netflix, why are we giving the CBC over $1 billion a year to broadcast junk television?

What would you rather see on the CBC? Tell us in the comments!

Angry Tom said last week that he would restore to the CBC the $100,000 that Harper took away last year.

You guys need to pay closer attention to some details. Your banner headline has white letters in front of a picture that has a bunch of white in it, the words are lost and very hard to read. An effective editor can help with this, usually all it takes is having someone in the position who has a good eye for detail. Use a different pic, use different fonts or colours, add a filter to fade the background picture to the background, where it belongs. That sort of thing. There are a lot of people out there who want this to fail, not paying attention to details like this is helping them, and hindering yourselves. You need to take a more stringent attitude to what is presented to the public, good enough just isn’t, in your case. I happen to know a guy who can help…

Michael Crowell…don’t doubt it. The CBC Halifax crew are probably the best examples of champagne socialists you could find. Twenty odd years ago there was some decent comedy coming out of there, but now it just churns out belly-aching stupidity. Air Farce, 22 Minutes….nothing but crap. Predictable as a Roadrunner cartoon.

Folks you want to see a piece of work look no further than the new HQ for CBC in Halifax. When I say new I mean new to them. The have taken over the building that used to house The Bay Department Store. It is a very large building. They are adding three new stories to the complex and flashy signage . Unbelievable.

I want to add that I have been contacted my the local MP office he wants to discuss with me the message that I sent to Harper. By the way the title of my Email was “Message from a discouraged supporter”

I sent a letter to Harper and to number of Conservative MPs in which I stated that I will not contribute any funds to the Conservative party for allowing the CRTC to kill the Sun News Network the only network that supported the conservative party agenda while providing funding to the CBC and other MSM channels whose agenda is clearly hostile to the conservative Party initiatives. I will direct my contributions to the Rebel Media even if this does not provide any Tax refunds.

I don’t think we should be forced to pay for any station with our tax dollars but as long as they are going do it why not give the people a say in how their money is being spent. I would far rather my tax dollars being sent in your direction. Nothing against the CBC, I think it is good to have differing view points aired. I just despise the sense of entitlement that comes with that particular culture.

I too, have emailed my MP re the CBC. I stopped watching when Sun News came on the air. I have no use for them with their left wing jibberish & as you pointed out Ezra, empty documentaries that mean nothing to me as a Canadian. Why is the gov’t funding a network who is one sided only? This is very discriminating & we should all contact our MP & the PM again to air our frustrations. Why the gov’t continues to fund the CBC who in turn is mocked & disrespected by many of their journalists with their left leaning comments is beyond me.

I have written to my MP several times regarding the CBC and I do not get any answers back. It is very frustrating and gives me the feeling that no matter what I say or think about the CBC, as with a lot of other Canadians, the government does not care. I am a staunch supporter of Mr. Harper and the Conservative government, but sometimes it gives me pause. However, I would never consider the other two parties – especially the one run by pretty boy Trudope.. The party run by the angry guy just does not cut it .
I guess the answer is to continue to write and hammer away in the hopes that something will be done about the CBC. I also believe that a complete revamping of the top brass from the arrogant CEO to all of the Managers would probably do wonders. But at this point it is only a dream.

Why is the Harper Conservative government, which is supposed to be a conservative government that is supposed to be against profligate spending of taxpayers’ money, and is supposedly acting on behalf of Canadian taxpayers and in our interest, continuing to bail out the CBC to the tune of a BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR?
commented 2015-03-20 17:20:15 -0400
Unbiased reporting would be a good start.

Good question, Ezra; one that many Canadians are asking. I agree with one commenter about the similarities between news broadcasts at CTV and CBC; they are almost simultaneous. If I switch one channel down from CBC, the same news story is playing on CTV. Language, video clips, etc. is almost identical. And we ARE paying more than a billion per year for CBC’s budget! Let’s start a campaign: “Stop the tax flow! CBC must go!”

Garry Anderson – I have also written my MP on occasion. I have also written James Moore, MP and now Shelly Glover, MP who is the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Minister Glover can be reached by email at shelly.glover@parl.gc.ca The more people that either phone, write letters, or email their MP and Shelly Glover will make a much stronger point in wanting the CBC privatized.
commented 2015-03-20 15:34:06 -0400
I agree with some of these comments. I also would love to see a huge FOR SALE sign in front of the CBC headquarters. If people don’t agree with this, then let the LIBERAL PARTY PAY for the CBC. CBC = LIBERAL propaganda machine.

BTW, whose mansion was it? Tom Freidman’s? Al Gore’s? Michael Moore’s? Robert Redford’s?

No, eh….

The only legitimate reason for any kind of tax payer funded television is to pick up the cost of local news coverage in smaller remote communities, particularly in the north. That could easily be accomplished by negotiating contractual arrangements with the major TV networks that already cover those areas. CBC is moribund, way past it’s “best before” date. There might of been some legitimacy for it back in the 1950s when it was the only Canadian TV out there, but those days are long gone. Those who want to see the CBC continue as “Public Broadcaster” should be the ones funding it through private donations, like PBS dose in the states. Those who want it should be the ones paying for it. That’s what we had to do with THEREBEL.MEDIA.

I would happily pay my share of CBC’s bloated budget if it focused on documentary series examining the history and on-going development of critical international issues, with open structured debates as required or desired. I would like to see separate and distinct series covering each of the following for example:
  • Monthly review of destruction of U.S. constitution and possible solutions, (e.g. the refusal of any and all U.S. courts to clarify the meaning of “natural born citizen”; Obama and Congress conspiring to ignore division of powers and impose an imperial presidency; possible amendment by a congress of states);
  • Corruption of courts world-wide, (e.g. American railroading of innocents like Black using excess and outrageous charges; incredibly stupid judgements (weekly or even daily); lawfare such as cases brought against Steyn here and in the U.S.);
  • Erosion of legal rights in English-speaking countries, (e.g. British abandonment of Magna Carta and Common Law in favour of European statism; loss of freedom of speech in star chambers enforcing baseless “Hate” laws, (now “Make me Feel Sad” laws); university speech codes);
    *Purposeful imposition of lunatic multi-culturalism in western countries including its possible origin, (e.g. Canadian bi-culturalism; Ted Kennedy acting out daddy’s Irish loathing of the English); its intent (e.g. U.K. Labour party “rubbing the nose of the right in diversity”; establishing 50 years of commie ascendency in U.S.); and its unintended effects, (e.g. mass rape of indigenous women and children in U.K. and Sweden), etc.;
  • Impact of major fellow-travellers, (e.g. George Soros’s origins, rise, motives, and the methods employed in destroying various economies including possibly the U.S.; Maurice Strong and Power Corp; actual behaviour of Castros and Guevara);
  • Daily tally and review of continuing world-wide terrorist attacks, whether Islamic, government or other, (e.g. something similar to thereligionofpeace.com; review past events like 9/11, Ruby Ridge, Waco, Gamil Gharbi’s Montreal massacre);
  • Honest and expert appraisal of the competing doctrines of Islam, including the positions of the main schools, and what is being taught, (e.g. the declared and disputed order of precedence of the surahs under abrogation; Meccan versus Medinan; the priority most give to the expansionist, violent and intolerant 9th, etc);
  • Real history of Israel and its relations with Arabs and Islam, and resulting ongoing issues;
  • State of, and future of, the U.N., (including origin and effect of Islamic dominance; possibility of reform or withdrawal; possible growth into world government);
  • .Global warming (in all its Gorey detail)
    …………………………………

Of course I might be the only one watching.

Why are we even discussing this, it should have been settled years ago CBC is a waste of time and money
commented 2015-03-20 12:31:16 -0400
Bang on Ezra, well said. Perhaps if we give Harper another majority, he may put an end to CBC. Or at least cut them loose. Let’s hope so.
commented 2015-03-20 11:49:51 -0400
If the Gov. broke up and sold the CBC , we wouldn’t miss any news as the CBC and CTV show the same news usually at the same time, except CTV doesn’t cost us anything.

Every time the “CBC” is raised, it hits a raw nerve! As I have said before, it galls me to no end knowing that part of my tax dollars, like it or not, subsidizes the liberal, progressive propaganda, and, as reported here by Ezra, ‘tabloid TV’ dished out by the CBC. Don’t forget Radio-Canada, the French branch of CBC, offering titillating porn programming from France.
Ezra I can’t believe your question: “What would you rather see on the CBC?”!
Lorna, thank you, the ONLY answer is: “A large FOR SALE sign”!
I have written to my Conservative MP countless times about this! The CBC has long moved past what it represented in the early days of television. Time for the CBC to be removed from the public trough and privatized!
Can’t some kind of campaign be started – a web site ? – to remove the CBC from the public trough?
commented 2015-03-20 10:43:47 -0400
What would I want to see on the CBC?
A large FOR SALE sign.

CBC..FUND YOURSELVES!
commented 2015-03-20 10:02:40 -0400
Do as I did contact your MP and tell them you do not want your tax dollar going to the cbc, if enough of us do that maybe it will change.
commented 2015-03-20 09:06:00 -0400
Question: Why did the CBC waste your tax dollars buying the rights to an American documentary about a billionaire couple building their over-sized dream house?

Answer: Well, they had to p*** it away somewhere, so it may as well be on something that fits the little-man, anti-American neuroses that afflicts so many CBC supporters. Besides, it’s not as if it (CBC) could come up with any of its own productions that would be worth watching.
commented 2015-03-20 09:01:10 -0400
Why can’t the government just stop the waste!
Let CBC be privately owned and be done with!
Stop wasting tax payers DOLLARS!!!!!!!!
I am a conservative! And like our PM but why does this continue???
Thanks Ezra for your stand to get the truth out there!!!!!:)
