Guest host JERRY AGAR: Notley’s minimum wage hike will make Alberta’s economy worse

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

It’s official: Alberta’s minimum wage will be $15 an hour by 2018.

Most people might find it counter-intuitive to hear that raising the minimum wage is harmful, but I can explain.

And it’s not just my opinion:

Thousands of years of economic history backs me up.

For example, economist Thomas Sowell writes:

“Just look down the unemployment column for countries with unemployment rates around 25 percent. Spain, Greece, and South Africa are always there, whether or not there is a recession. Why? Because they have very generous minimum-wage laws.

“While you are there, you can look up the unemployment rate for Switzerland, which has no minimum-wage law at all. Over the years, I have never seen the unemployment rate in Switzerland reach as high as 4 per cent.”

PS: Did you know the original minimum wage laws were racist? WATCH and learn…

Wildrose MLA Grant Hunter joins me to talk more about this issue.

Then energy expert Tom Adams and I discuss why Ontario Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne’s hydro rebate is another dumb, economically illiterate idea.

I just got back from Alberta. I asked 12 places smaller business if they pay wages below 15/ hour. They said no as they want people to work for them… The places that don’t are the big box stores and McDonald’s. So please get over this it will hurt. There is world wide proof and als so much economic proof this will help in two ways.
Remove subsidized welfare people off the system, something every conservative should be happy about. And second create more economic buying power in lower class and middle class work force. This increases business. If you can’t understand this. Please wine how it will hurt the billionaires of walmart’s payout.

Normally I tend to agree with the points on the Rebel but not entirely this time. First off the hike to 15 is not that radical historically speaking. Minimum wage was at one time about 50% of the average wage but this had plunged to around 35% by 2014. This at a time when society had radically changed against low income earners. For example phone service was subsidized by business long distance, this ended in the 1990’s. Then Pay phones disappeared for the most part. Government services more and more were pushed onto the internet so a computer and internet service is pretty much a requirement. Even accessing basic news information pretty much requires a internet connection whereas in the 80’s and 90’s you only needed a newspaper. Bank fees which were non-existent for many accounts skyrocketed(to avoid them, again you need internet access) Also taxes were taking a larger bite out of their paycheques. The end result of all this is the hike to 15 dollars is not as high as some seem to think. Notley’s mistake was in lying about the impact! Of course there will be a short term impact, stupid to claim otherwise. Once a government starts lying they lose ALL credibility.

I’m thinking that they will raise the minimum wage for an excuse to bring in more foreign workers. Particularly from China, since Junior wants to bring in more people from there. I seem to remember when the NDP were elected, they sent someone to China soon after the election. I thought it was for manufacturing bird killers, but maybe they are looking to bring in more cheap labour too. It seems to me that everywhere you turn now there are more foreign workers, than locals. These jobs should be going to Canadians first.

Hey folks – here’s a perfect example of a “minimum wage paid by Soros internet troll” – this $15 per hour marxist Notley shit show will destroy the entrepreneur – start up costs are prohibitive. It will also drive masses onto welfare – this is the real wish of marxist pig Notley.

Yes – this troll labels others as socialists, when in fact he is the socialist – makes no sense right??? Wrong – if you read Saul Alinsky’s book (thank goodness this fucking pig is now dead) it explains how you take your weakness (as this troll has) and stick them to threats/opponents.

Ignore the internet trolls – they are paid to post irrational annoying shit. See them for what they are – pawns with no opinions.

Good show Jerry. I’m glad to see the Thomas Sowell quotes – his writing is the first thing I think about when I hear discussions about minimum wages. The government is making it impossible for minimally skilled people to find work and get the experience at working that will lead to better jobs.

Switching gears, I suspect that Andrew Stephenson was referring to the size of Switzerland’s economy, not that Toronto looks or thinks anything like it. I don’t think Toronto has high enough gun ownership rates for a proper comparison.

RICHARD MAN I AGREE 100%!! I applaud you…except I do tip, but then I rarely go out. But bravo on everything you wrote!!

To start off I quit giving tips when they started hiking min wage. I feel I worked harder for the tip than most of these self righteous servers we get nowadays. Secondly, does anyone on here seriously think Notley and her bunch of Marxist slime buckets give a rats ass about anyone else but themselves? I got news for you, THEY DON’T. They will show sincerity in the last 18 months of being in power hoping all the cow brains out there forget the damage the assholes did and maybe they will get voted in again. Fat chance of that Notley you piece of shit. Thirdly, why does Anonymous come here and chirp people? Why don’t you just get lost because everyone here with any brains in their head can’t f ing stand you? Maybe we all should have a contest to see who can truly identify this bag of garbage and go pay him a nice visit?

Andrew Stephenson i am still waiting for all these awesome advantages of a left wing government to appear. You cannot even list any like i have asked more than once. Is that because there are none?

Anonymous Marxists and commie are scum of the earth.

Andrew Stephenson downtown Toronto leeches off of others,Switzerland does not. You really need to get out more.

Delusional is a gross understatement for the way she has killed or effectively ruined any forward path in that province..

Wynn’s fundamental programs are continuing. Of course they are. The woman is on a mission and nothing’s going to stand in her way. And she’s convinced that she’s ahead of the curve and will be seen as an icon some years down the road. She is of course – delusional!!
commented 2016-09-14 23:22:24 -0400
Andrew Stephenson, are you saying that downtown Toronto has a similar economic model to that of Switzerland?

You are insane, or just completely out of touch with reality … or both.

Shoveling wet cement into foundation forms in -25 weather cannot pay the same as someone who is serving drinks or making pizza..
Minimum-wage cannot work.
commented 2016-09-14 22:15:34 -0400
Since minimum wage earners will now be making a living wage…

Anybody working for tips, can kiss them goodbye.

Minimum wage in Alberta was implemented by conservatives. Are we finally prepared to do away with a minimum wage? If not, we are just arguing about the amount of the wage and not the philosophy of the program. I’d be interested in voting for politicians and a party which had as a platform the elimination of minimum wage. I doubt one is courageous enough to make it part of their platform.

On power costs; it is part of the UN agenda to cost energy to the point where we are taxed, especially the poor, into starvation and misery. We could half energy costs almost overnight thus raising the living standard of every Canadian.

Minimum wage is a lie…
Economics 101 dictates first and foremost that “people must produce more than they earn or consume”
The economic climate dictates the wages that can be paid fairly in a functioning economic environment.
commented 2016-09-14 20:50:03 -0400
If it clearly makes no sense, so why does the socialist NDP do it? Simple, it’s just what left-wing ideologues do, like the Communist Party of Canada which according to its utopian platform clamored for a raise of the minimum wage to $19 and the “useful idiots” love it:
Quite an inflation considering that in early 2014 they had called for “$14 Now”:
Not surprising really as it is part of Marx and Engel’s Communist Manifesto. As far as this being a part of the Alberta NDP’s platform, as the saying goes, “birds of a feather flock together”:

Switzerland is also very careful about its economic development, with a robust apprenticeship program and a very highly developed, world leading industrial sector that leaves the grunt work to other countries. If you took downtown Toronto and made that its own country, it would resemble Switzerland economically.

- Minimum wage hikes aren’t meant to help people, they’re meant to convince people that they’re getting something for nothing – that’s socialism 101.

- The Ontario government has destabilized the power grid, driven prices to unbelievable heights, created energy poverty & now expect to be applauded for throwing a few crumbs back to the people they’re destroying. Pathetic.

- Nobody does racism, sexism, etc. better than progressives.
commented 2016-09-14 20:47:18 -0400
Minimum wage isnt about helping poor, it’s about collecting more taxes. The higher the salaries, the more taxes governments get. It’s an indirect tax on business by proxy.

As for the power bills, the Stranded debt was supposed to be paid off in 2010. Why is it still there? The Liberals doctored the books, illegally, to make that debt not go away.

commented 2016-09-14 20:20:03 -0400
$15 per hour min wage does many things – all bad

1) kills small business overnight / startup costs rocket
2) pushes masses onto government income, eventually welfare – something the marxist pigs like Notley want – it justifies their socialist shit and they believe, gets them voters – have a look at Europe because this is exactly what they do over there
3) makes for a marxist society – you have a few large companies hog tied to the government and large government departments – and these are the sources for jobs -

Another step toward hell in a hand basket – nice job choosing this marxist piece of shit Alberta – hope you survive the next four years.
