Guns and flawed logic of political cops: “Shockingly dumb” commentary from former OPP Commissioner

Brian LilleyRebel Co-Founder

Canada has a problem with political cops who think they shouldn't just enforce the law but also make it, an example of which appeared in a rambling CP 24 column by former OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis.

Defying logic, he says we need more restrictions on legal gun ownership because criminals use guns.

Lewis opens his column stating the obvious, that Canada has much stricter gun control than the United States. He then points to an uptick in handgun shootings in Toronto (also obvious) which he follows by noting that most of the handguns used in those crimes are smuggled in from the United States (obvious again).

"Given that purchasing a handgun in Canada involves a fairly rigorous process, including background checks, many of the handguns that are used in crimes here have been either stolen from legal owners in Canada, or brought into Canada from the United States, where they are a dime a dozen."

After telling us that handguns used in these crimes are very difficult to get in Canada, his solution is . . . more gun control in Canada?

"Canada needs to thoroughly study the legal handgun possession matter immediately and significantly tighten the laws around ownership to limit the number of handguns in society that can be used illegally or stolen to do harm."

Lewis believes that only police, security guards, the military and maybe legitimate target shooters should be allowed to own handguns and he wants all of them stored in central locations, not in homes where they would be under lock and key.

To deal with stolen guns falling into the wrong hands, doesn’t rounding them all up in central locations just make it easier for criminals to steal large quantities of legal guns?

Lewis also muses about bringing back the long gun registry because, one supposes, gangsters using handguns for crimes in Toronto means that duck hunters in Red Deer need to register their shotguns?

That’s political logic for you.

Fact is, there is no logic in Lewis' arguments but that doesn't mean he can't win. He’s making these arguments now precisely because there’s a government in Ottawa that shares his view that average citizens shouldn’t own guns, especially handguns.

Rational people know you don't deal with gun crimes committed by gangs and mobsters, by cracking down on the law abiding gun owner who commits no crimes.

That’s the easy thing to do, but that doesn't mean it’s the right thing to do.

Funny how the progressives say pot laws are useless and feed crime , but gun laws will be followed and not feed crime. Any left wing progressive want to explain how they are mutually exclusive? And in case the progressives have not noticed , we have strict gun laws, so why is there such a problem? Oh that’s right , they are blaming the wrong people for the problem like usual.

making the laws .. much like our SOC which the lefties cherished for trying to make laws by overturning those made by the elected conservatives..

- in celebration of comrade Lewis’s position I declare Canada open carry no permit required……… - what do you mean I don’t have the authority to do that……..???

Mr. Lewis sounds like a ‘useful idiot.’…………….perhaps he’s a closet communist…

Bill Elder…your comment rings with too much truth! It couldn’t possibly be true could it?

“an ex- assistant commissioner of the RCMP has tabled an executive summary condemning the “politicization of the police” in which he states police brass should not publically promote any legislation nor offer political opinion nor support or criticize government policy and directives. He further states that civilian advisors and bureaucrats in the forces have a corrupting influence on police functioning professionally”….it would seem to me that this statement by a former brass of the RCMP speaks not only to this situation but also to the actions of the CFP. Unelected public servants have no business in making policy or law without public oversight through Parliament. Bureaucrats are to SERVE the elected officials and the general public and nothing more. When we want their opinion we’ll ask for it.

maybe comrade Lewis doesn’t like the freedoms our soldiers fought for in our country . maybe comrade Lewis would be much happier in some oppressive third world s%*thole like North Korea where there are more people that think like him . hell comrade Lewis wouldn’t even have to change his hat . he would fit right in
it wouldn’t take very long for a bunch of us patriots to band together and help all those ( like minded thinkers ) find happiness in a land more suited to their mentality………………good work Al Peterson

“Alright, there’s a gun problem in Toronto. We’ve known this for some time”

No, there is not a “gun problem” in Toronto. There’s a crime problem in Toronto… more specifically, there is a crime problem among certain demographics that’s completely out of proportion to their numbers re the general population. Start there.

This guy is a fucking idiot and, unfortunately, there are lots more idiots in government that will agree with him. I miss Harper.

I find it very telling that the empty politicking of this idiot gets media play while ignoring an ex- assistant commissioner of the RCMP has tabled an executive summary condemning the “politicization of the police” in which he states police brass should not publically promote any legislation nor offer political opinion nor support or criticize government policy and directives. He further states that civilian advisors and bureaucrats in the forces have a corrupting influence on police functioning professionally – and it is losing the police credibility and the trust of the public.

You don’t become chief of the OPP by being a great cop.

There is no demonstrable link between legitimate firearms owners and the actions of criminals – this demented schmuck is sucking Liberal titty to get a political appointment.

For every political loon like this there are 3 normal officer level police who do not scapegoat honest firearms owners for the violence drug culture does to society.

Having been hamstrung by the Conservatives for so long, all the elitist, left-leaning socialists have been craving for an opportunity to spew their brand of politics and social self-righteousness on the rest of us. Their opportunity has arrived in the form of a Liberal majority gov’t. Please don’t confuse my sentiments…I think most of our politicians and the system of big government sucks. I am no fan of any party. I only have less disdain for some. That being the ones who haven’t furthered the erosion of my ability and yours to own firearms.

I have become increasingly suspicious in recent years of the actual reality of an elitist plan to disarm the populations…globally. I’m not a conspiracy theorist. But the evidence, IMHO seems to point that way and if true…presents a terribly frightening future. Guns can be likened to the canary in the mine. What so many empty-headed, fearful and baffled by BS people don’t realize is, once the rights are legislated away they are not easily brought back and almost never are. They are lost and freedom suffers. And, when freedom suffers…we suffer.

Our forebears would be ashamed at the cavalier treatment of their blood sacrifices for our freedom. As echoed earlier in these comments…WHY DO WE BEG TO HAVE OUR FREEDOM REMOVED FROM US??? I say…take your head out of that proverbial bag of smack and get back to reality!

Guns aren’t going anywhere. Prosecute the heck out of criminals and put ‘em away for a good long time. But I’m afraid…that’s not the agenda here. And that public safety isn’t truly the aim is truly disheartening and disingenuous. (That means lies…for any Libtards who want to be offended)

I compared Manitoba’s murder rate with North Dakota’s and Minnesota’s next door to us.
ND: no personal permit required. No registration required. 39,000 concealed carry permits. Machine gun ownership allowed under federal permit.

Minnesota: Same as ND but with 250,000 concealed carry permits

MB. The full complement of Canadian gun laws. PAL required to won a gun. Registration required to own a handgun. Must be double locked. No Concealed carry allowed. Machine guns are prohibited as are many semi auto’s (based on appearances alone).

Murder rates?
ND: 2.6/ 100,000
MN: 1.6/100,000
MB: 4.1/ 100,000
Who has the wrong approach to gun laws?

Even Florida with 1.3 MILLION (!) CCP’s has a murder rate slightly higher than Manitoba’s.

It is time to learn the stats on gun ownership and to quote then to your friends, family and acquaintances. Don’t rely the emotional claptrap from the MSM- CBC et al.

This guy is a typical lefty, “inside every lefty is a tyrant screaming to get out.” He knows bloody well that his ideas are BS but he doesn’t care because he doesn’t want the truth. He is a control freak. The governments and cops in Canada treat us like children and as though they are the adults. I resent that condescending attitude. There is no bigger Peter Pan who doesn’t want to grow up that Justin Trudeau and his ilk. And this donkey wants to tell us what is good for us and what “Canadian values” are as if he would know. He just parrots back whatever his handlers tell him.

It’s time that the Canadian sheeple refuse to be treated this way. The place to start is at election time. Refuse to be treated as a child by a child. Do not vote for anyone who is so condescending and tell them why. You don’t become an adult by being elected.

Gun control is not crime control.

Pass mandatory criminal control!

Step one.

If charged with having/using a firearm unlawfully….

No reduced bail, Subject to an automatic dangerousness hearing, No plea bargains, No reduced sentences, No early release from prison, and minimum sentencing laws for crimes committed with a firearm.

No need for step two.

The comment s not at all “shocking”. As a matter of fact it was entirely predictable.

Just about everyone who has crawled, clawed, slid, kissed, stabbed and slithered to the top of any large police agency is already a politician of the first order. Lewis is simply sending out the signal (as did Blair, Fantino, and host of others) that he is ready, willing and able to enter the cesspool of regular politics.

Lewis has aptly demonstrated a profound lack of intellect making him an ideal candidate for some appointment in the present government. He is just interviewing for the next best thing.

Here we go , these guys retire and then start feeling lonely and and have to make themselves heard because they want to have that sense of importance again and have people listen to them. It’s the loneliness of not being in command and control of something. He’s no doubt suffering dementia and thinks he’s still in charge, not to worry he will soon be in the throes of full out Alzheimer’s and will forget all about his political aspirations. I don’t know how a sack of puss like this guy even gets to be in a position of service like he was, he obviously has no sense of logic or common sense. And let’s be honest though he fits the uniform of most cops, as Iv’e said it before it’s not new that they are scared of everything. Scared law abiding citizens have guns, scared citizens are better trained, scared citizens aren’t scared like they are and they are always in fear of their life. This idiot Lewis forgets that all of us are citizens including the cops as I’m sure a lot of them are also gun owners. Keep in mind it’s cops that are violating the law and moral decency concerning the use of guns, not your sporting legal gun owners. Among other police forces in this country the OPP for offences they have committed don’t have the right to judge anyone else or even walk tall. They certainly don’t have the right to legislate laws, that should be under the control of the public. It has long been, that the police have lost the vision as to what their mission is. The manner in which they behave, the things they do, the fear they demonstrate is most disappointing. They are so efficient at attacking law abiding citizens and stealing their property like common looters, they need to direct that energy toward societies criminals and start being part of the community that pays them, but it’s easier and safer to go after individuals that support the law.

In the context of Orwell, former OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis is a dog.

And this dog needs to be taken out back and shot dead.

The part that really burns my butt is that this little turd well knows that through his connections, even if guns are confiscated from law abiding Canadians, he will always be able to have a gun in his own home “just in case”… In effect, a “carry license” not afforded to the rest of us poor saps…

IIRC, it is illegal under most police legislation for officers to engage in “political activity”…..as it should be.
For some reason, everybody has forgotten about that. Everybody pretends that legislation does not exist. Why?

In a country(Australia) that since Prisons minister Rex (Buckets) Jacksons’ “early release scheme” in the 1980’s that saw murderers get released from gaol within three years, it’s 2016 it still does not recognise murder is murder !!!!
In 1996-7 the firearms were banned(and are no use to anyone without a second amendment and rights – Australia has niether) but for the maximum drop in homicide total by percentage it has never saved more than 9 – 20 lives because it is never more than 15 to 20 percent in all 100 years statistics collection in Australia.
However, with “one punch laws” implemented near two decades later, it starts to deal with one of the main bulk percentage of homicide in all the 100 years of statistics collection of “Hands fist feet” (70 to 80 percent is shared with this and knives and blunt implement) !!!
