Brian LilleyRebel Co-Founder

According to reports Prime Minister Stephen Harper is ready to throw in the towel on Senate reform and call for the Red Chamber to be abolished.

No matter how good the plan may sound, it isn't likely to happen. I explain why.

you know I surely dispise the senate and for obvious reasons and also some of the so called senators but if you look at what some of our MP reps get away with and no says a goddahm thing. 500,000.oo per year in expenses 1250000 of it in airline travel etc.its sick its wrong and it needs changing .the senate is useless and needs gone but we need to curtail all the asshole MP,s that gouge the public with their ridiculous expense accounts also

The Quebec Senate was eliminated by not appointing any more people to the Senate. Why can’t the Canadian Senate be ended the same way?

senate gone! people in east love it[they own all seats]. senators love it because they get paid to do nothing and our accountable to no one. harper has the perfect plan but as always the east[trudeau] says we must keep it. well as always you can have it, just let my people go. separation, what a lovely word.

I am like, there must have been a reason to put this Canadian Senate in place in the beginning and would really like to understand it’s functions… before tareing it out of the system as a poor mechanic would do when he or she decides this car had too many parts! I have read about this senate being able to take legislated Bills and give them some second thought before passing them…. and with some of the Bills we have had passed we all know that can’t be a bad thing as some of those Bills and Legislation can be totally detrimental to Canadian citizens’! Unfortuately though, rather than do any quality service for the citizens’ of Canada these latest batch of Senators’ seem to have found a cushy spot to land their butts and haul off a ridiculous huge wage for having rendered very little in the way of Goods and Sevices for the Canadian citizens’ who contribute to their wages! I would prefer then, in that case they come to an agreement wherebye the Senate can render some sevice and work that contributes to a better quality lifestyle for all Canadians’ and Canada!

I would love to see either the senate abolished or reformed, reformed preferably.

1) 4 year terms. No more than 2 terms, consecutive or not.
2) lower the income wage by 30%, spartan retirement package if served both terms to completion without any illegal activity.
3) all senators elected by the people of the province which they represent.
4) senators appointed by the PM from the next in line for that province, no pick and choose.
4) tighten up the expenses rules & clarify them beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Now, having posed this list, I know that is as unlikely to happen as the abolition of the senate, but a guy can dream!

Jay said, "Harper could have reformed the senate by appointing respectable Canadians who would represent their regions well. "

And how does a person determine what someone else will do in the future. That is a lame ass argument. You cannot blame one person for the actions of another, let alone the future possible actions of another. The left use that brain dead argument to accuse Harper of Duffy’s actions. An argument of pure fecal matter.

Harper could have reformed the senate by appointing respectable Canadians who would represent their regions well. Instead he chose people who he thought would be good poster-children for the Conservatives. It is a little late to try and borrow a page from the NDP election platform in order to share some of their popularity.

If Harper does not appoint new Senators—- then is he Not essentially scuttling the Senate? It is quite the gamble—-
commented 2015-07-24 22:11:36 -0400
This story is unsubstantiated anyway. Harper has not promised to scuttle the Senate and he won’t.

Sometimes the few Unit trust owners must suffer for the good of the Many. ))

Paul Dunbar, if your writing and spelling are any indication I would suspect your $300,000.00 was Monopoly Money

To Paul Dunbar on UNIT Trusts. I am sorry for your financial loss on these Unit Trusts. This taxpayer is glad Harper closed the loophole

In theory, the Senate was to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority, does Ontario have a Senate?
If the Senate were abolished, would there be such a mechanism?
commented 2015-07-24 20:36:23 -0400
Correct me if I am wrong. If Harper is the truly nasty Leader that some people portray him to be—- then he should stack the Senate with loyal, lap dawgs , nobody over 40 tears old and the Conservatives could control the Senate for the next 25 years. He is Not doing this . He is leaving it ‘wide open’— to the Integrity of the Libs or NDP . This is what a ‘Statesman’ does.

Harper knows that if he appoints 20 senators he will be attacked relentlessly by the opposition and leftist nitwits,
and Harper know that if he does not appoint 20 senators he will be attacked relentlessly by he leftist nitwits,
and Harper knows that is he breaths in air and keep a heart beat going he will be attack relentlessly by leftist nitwits.

I am seeing tow pattern here: 1) Harper gets attacked relentlessly for simply being alive, and 2) the leftists are nitwits.

Harper could appoint about 20 new Senators -but he has not done so-. The Conservatives speak with action—-not moral Platitudes.

I’m not a big senate fan, but they could prove useful as a last line of defense to protect us from the NDP in any future, but unlikely NDP regime.

…or it could be a ploy by our canny Conservative PM.
Given the left’s obsessive and consistent knee-jerk response of opposing everything and anything of Stephen Harper’s, maybe out of frustration at being stymied at every turn by the Liberal/NDP coalition and the clowns on the SCoC, our PM has, in desperation, resorted to using child psychology on these unruly brats, to fool them into supporting and even fighting for SERIOUS Senate reform – and then ‘give-in’ at the opportune time, trap them in their own hysterical words, then move forward quickly and decisively on SERIOUS Senate reform, with the ‘help’ of the opposition. It could happen.
How else can a government in Canada’s partisan-political system get the job started in earnest, let alone be successful in accomplishing that kind of reform?
…because we really don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water!
commented 2015-07-24 14:21:37 -0400
that being said the senate should have been gone long ago.I don’t understand why we would spend millions upon millions to pay senate wages senate expenses senate operation costs etc when we allow our school and medical systems to languish in debt and constant cutbacks

I was a Harper fan till that lieing SOB lied about UNIT Trusts when he was first elected .he cost me over 300K
no matter what you think or believe hes a no good lieing asshole

Harper is one politician with his head squarely on his shoulders while the rest of them have their heads “where the sun don’t shine”. He is the only leader in whom I can place my trust.
commented 2015-07-24 13:06:42 -0400
Harper gets credit for at least trying to fix the Senate. Trudope or Angry Tom guarantee they would stuff the Senate with ass kissers.
