Some things never change with the Liberals. Treating Western agricultural producers like second class citizens is one of those perpetual truisms you can bet the farm on when it comes to the Liberal Party of Canada.
Western grain farmers have been asking for a meeting with Liberal Transportation Minister Marc Garneau to address issues they face with regard to rail transport of their crops. Farmers want the Liberals to honour a campaign promise to ensure the rail companies aren't abusing their monopoly and the farmers want to avoid the same grain transport bottleneck that cost farmers and the Canadian economy billions of dollars in 2013-2014.
Farmers are no small contributor to the Canadian GDP paying $1.4 billion in freight charges alone to ship 40 million tonnes of grain each year. But instead of treating farmers like the wealth creators they are, Garneau has been ignoring them.
Garneau’s ministry has been stonewalling the farmers, taking months to return calls and requests for meetings, with farm groups waiting over six months just to hear a “not available” from the Minister’s handlers.
Finally the feds have agreed to meet with farmers on October 20 after the farm groups went public with their concerns. But it might be too little too late. The Federal carbon tax will be added to the cost of grain freight now.
With the West being ignored, insulted and overtaxed, today’s Sunny Ways Liberals could be Liberals circa 1985.
