Fat shaming: Don't be a human Happy Meal in the zombie apocalypse!

David MenziesMission Specialist

Does Canadian comedian Nicole Arbour deserve the social media shaming she's receiving after releasing a "fat shaming" video?

The truth is, we're getting fatter as a society.

Comedy is supposed to shock us, make us laugh or both and that's done by telling uncomfortable truths.

Some say if the truth hurts, don't tell it but what if fat shaming results in fat awareness that motivates some to lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle? Isn't that a good thing?

And yes…I see the typos. There is no way, that I can see, to edit your comment. I know some techies who could fix that ;)

It is inexplicable to me how we as a society can think “shaming” is ok, for ANYTHING. You know what public shaming leads to…suicide. So is that the intent here, let’s just have all the “fat” people kill themselves. Oh, and just so we are all real clear on what constatutes being " plus size" well for women, that’d be if you wear more than a 12, and weigh more than 145. Huh…what do all you ladies think now? Do u feel YOU size 14 women should be Fat shamed, or maybe it’s just 16 and up, and of course because we live in a double standard life you know the men are going to get a much higher bench mark. And while we are at it why don’t we just start shaming all the “stupid” people, you know all those dumb slow people with " special needs" yeash, Autism is also becoming an epidimic, and that’s real costly to the tax payers with all the medical expenses and specialists. And cancer patients….omg. All those smokers who willingly take in this horrible toxic waste that will lead to cancer, cost the tax payers hundreds of thousands, lest do good shaming in them too..cause that’s also an epidemic. And what about all those four eyed, lazy eyed, coke bottle wears. Better start shaming them too, their Mum likely told them not to sit so close to the TV , it’s bad for your eyes, now look at them….having to have all that damn cateaxe taken off their dang eyeballs. Now that I think of it, I think shaming is the way to go, we could likely clear up alot of messes in our society, or we could just be perpetuating hate, and intolerance and showing just what an ugly society we have become. And …before everyone gets up in my grill lookin up my LinkedIn and my facebook and googles me, yes, I’m overweight. Shocker, huh. But, I’ve also run half marathons, have lead a very active life, and reached ex utile level in my carrer and travelled all over the world…somehow…not sure how I accomplished all this, being so fat and all.

I fear the raving ego-maniac Nicole Arbour is sealing her own fate with her mouth, passing off arrogance under the guise of comedy. Nasty little piece of work there. God has a way of dealing with these.

The world has lost its sense of humor, all I can say is “Joke them if they can’t take a fuck”

“Do you think it’s just a matter of eating celery and going for a walk?”

Doesn’t work. Tried that. It is nigh on to impossible to get rid or it once you get it … except by liposuction (shudder!)

Debrah Graupner, have you seen Alberta’s minister of health, lately?
commented 2015-10-18 16:10:03 -0400
I’m morbidly obese, and I don’t take any offence at fat jokes. In fact, I enjoy a good laugh at my own expense. I also realize that it’s not healthy, and that, at 68, I have already lived much longer than I have any right to expect. And, all things considered, I’m still surprisingly healthy for my weight… just not very mobile.

i thought at first we are becoming way to sensitive on funny attacks, but more and more now i believe we are becoming more and more stupid on these humorous jokes with an edge to them or not. relax people and laugh at jokes when they are funny instead of being a bunch of moronic cry babies.

Peter,

I am not blaming anyone – it’s just that conservatives tend to want to make the most noise when it comes to fat shaming per social media.

What’s your view on obese people? Do you think it’s just a matter of eating celery and going for a walk?
commented 2015-10-18 15:16:23 -0400
" it does seem that those that have received media attention for fat shaming or discriminating do tend to be conservatives."

There, now the world is back in order, you have blamed it on conservatives.
commented 2015-10-18 14:59:10 -0400
Peter,

Well everyone does it in the real world, however it does seem that those that have received media attention for fat shaming or discriminating do tend to be conservatives.
commented 2015-10-18 14:30:04 -0400
Jimmy, aren’t you going to blame discriminating against fat/obese people as a thing the conservatives do?

You must be on your meds, today. Not quite so cranky.
commented 2015-10-18 14:19:23 -0400
It seems like making fun of fat/obese people is still considered to be a good time coming and discriminating against fat/obese people is the one issue that is still acceptable – even in the work place, where they state that they don’t discriminate.

For many millions of people, the issue has very little to do with them just stuffing their faces. It’s goes so much deeper than that, but society just sees a fat person.

Nicole Arbour is hot – check this – http://www.torontosun.com/2015/10/05/controversial-comic-nicole-arbour-recalls-being-a-sunshine-girl. Nicole Arbour is definitely “tappable”.

Hot doesn’t cut it anymore. Shock is the new “sell sex”.

Obesity is a growing business for processed foods industry – great Aussie movie about the “sugar added to processed foods” industry that makes us all fatter and fucks our lives – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3892434/.

Arbour could have been nicer, but few listen to nice people. Fat people are a huge problem (no pun intended), but great for business and socialized healthcare that are always looking for new clients to justify their over reaching bloatedness.

“Comedy is supposed to shock us or make us laugh or both”. True, but what makes us laugh?, the crude language? I really like the Rebel, BUT, it would be nice if a warning was given that SOME might be offended by the coarse language. Foul language offends me and I make no apology for that. There is a warning on Gavin MacInnes’ videos, and I appreciate that because I can opt for tuning out. Call me a prude, or a June Cleaver, you have the freedom to do so. I love a good joke but comedians can be funny without being crude. To me, the message is lost when you have to resort to swearing to make a point. I’m beginning to think that freedom of speech can be carried too far. Why bother going to school, you can learn that language in the gutter!

I’m about 6’3 and 400 lbs. I have the body of a chunky linebacker. I’m fat but not so fat I can’t fit through doorways or sit in average seats. I became obese as a kid, so that weight becomes next to impossible to lose now. My bp used to be 230/130. Today my bp is consistently around 130/80. I drink about 2-3 large protein laden smoothies daily. I take in omega 3 pills and I exercise about 2-3 hours a week. My mind feels clearer and my heart rate has strengthened. I can’t lose weight but I no longer have the mentality of a fat ass. I am disgusted by the average fat person. Most of them can’t be bothered to take care of themselves. Being fat isn’t just about physical size, it’s just as much about mental state. Fat people who care about how the look can look great. Melissa McCarthy was huge and she wasn’t disgusting. Mama June from Honey Boo-Boo is fucking gross… There’s a real distinction there between the quality of fat people. Just take care of yourself. Make lifestyle changes and the rest will come with it. Being fat isn’t normal, nor is it heroic.

Well, as a “larger-than-should-be” individual, people can do the shaming all they want. yawn!

A telling screed from the SM culture – as expected, we have “selfie gen” narcissism posing as “comedy?”. I suppose by extending the sophistry of this dialectic, old people, handicapped and other non ambulatory people who do not meet her physical dimensional requirements of will also be included in her apocalyptic population culling fantasies. Perhaps these people should be euthanized now to save the selfies the trouble of expending ammo on them in the perceive coming apocalypse?

I still support her right to be as big an A-hole as she wants to be and prove it by running her mouth, but I also support other people’s right to freely criticise her criticising – the end result will be a re-grounding to some semblance of rational pragmatism.

Obesity is an epidemic and I think shaming is not the only answer but it is a tool that can be used. The government and some organizations continually to shame cigarette smokers and tax them due to huge increases in health care, obesity is the same, so why are these same organizations not going after the obese for them to pay more for health care? Just curious as to why it is OK to shame one set of the population but not another, democracy is about treating all the same.

The IMOM (Internet Manufactured Outrage Machine) is always out there – ready to pounce – actively seeking anything to be outraged about.
commented 2015-10-18 11:51:46 -0400
Debrah Graupner: You would be amazed at how many obesity cases are linked to mis-prescribing medications. The government definitely has a responsibility it is ducking here.

I guess it’s only our government health agencies, that are allowed to use “shaming” when commenting on someone’s weight.
