NDP’s history of racism, eugenics and homophobia: Inside the shocking writings of “Saint” Tommy Douglas

Rebel Staff

Leilani Muir has died. She was forcibly sterilized by the government of Alberta because she was deemed “defective.” This happened to 2,800 people in Alberta, between 1928 and 1972.

It was called eugenics, and it was all the rage back then. Not just on Adolf Hitler’s side of the Atlantic, but in North America too. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, set up a “Negro Project” to abort only black babies.

Yesterday Alberta’s NDP minister for Human Services, Irfan Sabir, gave a touching remembrance to Leilani Muir.

Of course, these being Alberta New Democrats, they blamed Ralph Klein, the late PC premier. Klein had nothing to do with it; the policy was abolished by the PC party long before Klein was premier.

In fact, Canada’s leading eugenics booster in the 1930s was Tommy Douglas, the socialist premier of Saskatchewan who went on to become the leader of the federal NDP. He was voted "The Greatest Canadian," remember?

Let’s look at a book he wrote in 1933, “The Problems of the Subnormal Family.”

He wants to ban certain people from getting married. He favoured segregation by social class, and sex. And he called for the sterilization of "the physically unfit and mental defectives." It could be written by a Nazi.

Tommy Douglas later abandoned his eugenics fad, once Hitler had discredited it. But he sure loved signing people up for forced medical attention. Wait until you hear what he said about homosexuals...

My guest and TheRebel.media's resident historian John Robson joins me to discuss Tommy Douglas' controversial legacy.

Then prairie tax watchdog Todd MacKay talks about scaling back the provincial sales tax in Manitoba as the province's election ramps up.

And finally, your letters to me -- good and bad!

Lefties have always kept quiet about “Saint Thomas” and his views on forced sterilization and eugenics. Can’t tarnish that socialist halo.

Bob- Morals of abortion aside, you said that the rich shouldn’t have to pay for other peoples stupidity. Who pays for abortion in Canada? Taxpayers. Abortions are free here, you also say single mothers in Canada are having many children. What do you propose? Those women are opting to have children in spite of the choice of a free abortion.
Would you like mandated abortion based on income? Sterilization? You sound like a statist who thinks he knows best for others. Ann Coulter is a loud mouthed flake.
The problem with Canada is we have feminized men that have no interest in being fathers, passive, weak, pot smoking, goofs that would rather go to a hockey game than play hockey. Children farmed out to daycares so mommy can be a career woman. Kids learning politics and life skills from teachers who have no clue. Even in the middle class and wealthier families, its absentee parenting. They let facebook, twitter and politically illiterate teachers raise their kids. Money can’t fix any of that. It requires personal sacrifice of your time and energy as a parent directly spent on your children.
Most Canadians are too selfish to do that.

Sarah, I wish all people were as nice and generous as you sound; but we have to be more realistic. In Canada we have a problem with single mothers having many children, however it goes unreported as our media is politically correct. In the USA there are more statistics. Not many of these poor children with one parent go on holidays in Mexico. Instead of reading half facts from me, read Ann Coulter’s Book on the subject. By the way, I am aware that single mothers and the poor can be among the best parents or parent in the world. They only start off with the odds against them.
commented 2016-03-22 09:38:39 -0400
Wow Bob, you were serious. The plight of children not being able to keep up with the Jones. Yep those pathetic poor kids are better off aborted. It might blow your mind to realize there are plenty of poor (financially) children that never realize they’re poor. They think they’re happy and loved. They go camping with their families in tents, rather than winter vacations to Mexico. The poor parents take their children to playgrounds instead of movie theaters. What a terrible quality of life.
The potential for a child to grow up poor is a pathetic excuse for abortion/murder.
I feel sorry for you that you can’t recognize there is more to life than material goods, and that life is sacred.
Maybe I’m crazy but I think teaching a kid to want for something instead of instant gratification builds character, sorry Johnny buy your own designer jeans.
I hope that you’d teach your children not tie their value in life to possessions or zeros in a bank account.
commented 2016-03-21 23:55:49 -0400
Peter, I was showing the people here that are completely against abortion , that there are consequences like millions of unwanted children. We all feel sorry for the single mothers, but most people don’t think of what those poor kids go through. I believe this also answers Sarah’s question.
commented 2016-03-21 22:03:12 -0400
Bob Egli- Are you worried about the fact that mom can’t afford to buy her second grader a cell phone? Or her kids not having the same blue jeans as the other kids?
Are you serious?

Bob Egli said, “Peter and Drew are OK with the USA Having an extra 60 million poor Black and White fatherless children.”

Where do you get that idea, Bob? What comment of mine are you referring to, the one about abortion?

Would you mind explaining what you mean by your comment I quoted?

Ron only has inanities. He is an empty head, like junior.

Of course hitler and the ndp shared eugenics policies. They were all nationalists, socialists, and fascists. The only difference was hitler was more honest about his intentions

Douglas rarely mentioned his thesis later in his life, and his government never enacted eugenics policies, even though two official reviews of Saskatchewan’s mental health system recommended such a program when he became Premier and Minister of Health.16 By the time Douglas took office in 1944, many people questioned eugenics due to Nazi Germany’s embrace of it in its effort to create a “master race.”17 Instead, Douglas implemented vocational training for the mentally handicapped and therapy for those suffering from mental disorders.

I guess Ezra, Peter and Drew are OK with the USA Having an extra 60 million poor Black and White fatherless children. Did you ever think what it would be like at 8 years old and Mom can’t afford food let alone the blue jeans the rest of the kids are wearing? Its even worse these days when kids in Grade 2 and 3 have Cell Phones., and they laugh at you for not having one. Also did you people ever think of WHO is going to pay for it all ? We make the rich pay for most things, but they should not have to pay for other people’s stupidity.

If there is one province that I really don’t like, it is Manitoba. The commie mindset has laid deep roots there. The problem is that things have gotten so bad that even a conservative gov’t would be hard pressed to fix the place. The best thing for the few conservatives that live there is to move to Sask and let the socialists turn on each other, as they always do. As for Tommy, I never heard these things before. Shocking, I must say. I shouldn’t be surprised. The level to which their mindset is willing to remove or suppress personal freedoms at the hands of the state continues to grow.

Ronny, Ronny, Ronny…….you are talking out your ass, or your face…..hard to tell. Anyway, you and your ilk have full claim to the mental condition “fucktard”. As for you and your fellow fucktard Nate, get a room where you can lick each other’s nuts there. It would be comical reading your posts if it wasn’t in fact so sad, in that you suffer a mental illness……leftist progressivism. Seek help sickos.

Seriously, these views only persist on the right. The only sense in which I’m not completely disgusted by these hit pieces (and no, by no means am I averse to honesty in history, but let’s be honest, and cover all angles of the story), is in its potential to eradicate such untolerable views where they continue to persist, and that’s on the right.

Exactly ight. The fuktard right extremists cannot intelligently understand what you just told them.

Well George, Dizzy Levant can play fast and loose with the facts, so I’m saying that if you wipe your ass with either your right hand or left hand, it doesn’t matter, you are STILL a Nazi.

I have read many of the comments and those critical of this piece seem to think that it’s one sided but I think that both sides of Tommy Douglas were told. It was not a piece about Tommy’s Health care initiative it was about his darker writings. I think the limited treatment of Tommy Douglas was both fair and enlightening.

Nathan W said, “Did conservatives stand up to do anything about it? Even a small word of criticism?
No. The change came from within progressive ranks. Conservatives never cared about these people.”

Nathan W, the Conservatives did stand up and do something about it. When they took power in 1972 they stopped the eugenics sterilization program immediately.

But don’t let facts get in your way, Nathan.

Did conservatives stand up to do anything about it? Even a small word of criticism?

No. The change came from within progressive ranks. Conservatives never cared about these people.

These hit pieces are not quite revisionist crap, but in focusing exclusively on one side of the story, they are not far from revisionism.

Were this to have occurred in a situation of extensive opposition from social conservatives, then the current storyline would be credible (although still irrelevant to the current preferences of leftist parties).

“Tommy Douglas later abandoned his eugenics fad”

Right. So let’s respect a man who can look history in the face and realize he did the wrong thing, and revise accordingly.

On homosexuals? Well, why single out Douglas? Hateful attitudes about homosexuality were rampant in those days. And anyways, why not talk about where they persist today?

Well, if all these hit pieces against dead people who held views which came to be viewed as intolerable can accomplish one thing, perhaps it is that conservatives will come around, helped by the fact that they can smear dead people for views which were broadly supported in their time, in hopes of making present-day progressives look bad.

Not convinced yet Christensen ? How about we as the expert !

In Mussolini’s own words
Let us listen initially to some reflections on the early days of Fascism by Mussolini himself — first published in 1935 (See the third chapter in Greene, 1968).
“If the bourgeoisie think they will find lightning conductors in us they are the more deceived; we must start work at once …. We want to accustom the working class to real and effectual leadership”.
And that was Mussolini quoting his own words from the early Fascist days. So while Mussolini had by that time (in his 30s) come to reject the Marxist idea of a class-war, he still saw himself as anti-bourgeois and as a saviour and leader of the workers. What modern-day Leftist could not identify with that?
“Therefore I desire that this assembly shall accept the revindication of national trades unionism”
So he was a good union man like most Leftists today.
“When the present regime breaks down, we must be ready at once to take its place”
Again a great Leftist hope and aspiration.
“Fascism has taken up an attitude of complete opposition to the doctrines of Liberalism, both in the political field and in the field of economics”.
The “Liberalism” he refers to here would of course be called “Neo-liberalism” today — the politics of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. Mussolini opposed such politics and so do Leftists today.
“The present method of political representation cannot suffice”.
Modern-day Leftists too seem to seek influence outside the normal democratic channels — from strikes and demonstrations to often successful attempts to get the courts to make law.
“Fascism now and always believes in holiness and in heroism; that is to say in actions influenced by no economic motive”
He here also rejects the Communist emphasis on materialism. Leftism to this day is often seen as a religion and its agitators clearly often long to be seen as heroic and unmaterialistic.
“Fascism repudiates the conception of “economic” happiness"
Leftists today also tend to regard consumerism as gross (or say they do as they drive off in their Volvos).
“After the war, in 1919, Socialism was already dead as a doctrine: It existed only as a hatred”.

Chrisitensen . . . Fascists are a product of the LEFT . . . socialists ALL . . . YOUR Fellow Travellers LOON !

Mussolini . . . A Leftist prophet

The ideas of Benito Mussolini (1883-1945), the founder of Fascism, are remarkably similar to the ideas of modern-day Western Leftists. If Mussolini was not the direct teacher of modern-day Leftists, he was certainly a major predecessor. What Leftists advocate today is not, of course, totally identical with what Mussolini was advocating and doing 60 to 80 years ago in Italy but there are nonetheless extensive and surprising parallels. Early in the 20th century, he prophesied that the 20th century would be the century of Fascism and he got that right in that most of his ideas are still preached by the modern-day Left.

What a coincidence that both Douglas and Hitler were socialists. And the truth is that the left is terrified that we, ‘the great unwashed’ will make that connection despite their efforts to distance themselves from their Nazi cousins.
