In election 2015, the choices are stark, not shades of grey

Brian LilleyRebel Co-Founder

Despite what some may believe, the choices we face in this election are not marked by shades of grey.

The most stark question before us is, how much government do you want in your life?

The "Anybody But Conservative" crowd is delighted whenever presumed conservative supporters turn on Harper over issues like boutique tax credits or other minor differences thinking it surely means he's losing his base.

True, some conservative supporters are upset but they should pause and ask themselves if they're prepared to live with the alternative with either the Liberals or NDP in charge which will certainly mean more spending everywhere.

The famous adage, "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" comes to mind. If you're concerned about a growing government intruding into every aspect of our lives, you might want to carefully consider what taking a damn the consequences attitude in this election will mean in the end.

I agree William, just look at what the Liberals managed to do to Ontario: A Have Province to a Have Not status, downgraded credit rating, high electricity costs, manufacturing fleeing the province, turbines up the rural wazoo (not Toronto so who cares according to Wynne) not to mention their “green” subsidies, the new pension scam, and the list just goes on and on and on. Imagine that on a large scale. Wynne is also backing Trudeau, that speaks volumes in itself.

This country is doomed if either the Liberals or the stupid NDP get into office.

This coming from someone who can barely string a proper sentence or paragraph together and doesn’t understand grammar and punctuation.

Jimmy Da Moron who cares what They think. Harper is almost perfect for this Conservative. Robson is a strange academic to me. I don’t think I have heard him say anything so dumb before.
You of course are always dumb.

Hyacinth,

What are you talking about? It’s conservatives that are saying that Harper isn’t really a conservative. I couldn’t care less to what degree Harper is a conservative. But John Robson and Andrew Coyne do.
commented 2015-08-23 15:25:39 -0400
Jimmy, those who vote for Harper (actually the conservative MP in their riding) has his/her own reason(s); conservatives think for themselves instead of being indoctrinated like the left.
You keep referring to “fake conservative” time and time again, but it seems to me that the left have a firmer grasp on fake. I.e.: Bob Rea, was the leader of the NDP in Ontario, then he became the Premiere of Ontario, then the Interim Federal Liberal Leader. A Dipper turned Liberal to climb the political ladder. I’d call that a fake Liberal. Those that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

Jimmy Da Moron I vote policy not for any candidate in particular. Harper makes me proud so does Ezra, Brian and the Rebel staff.
I certainly don’t agree with everything on the Rebel. 95% isn’t bad though.
One thing I can guarantee you is I will never vote NDP or Liberal. The otheroarties don’t even 3xist to me.
Harper is the best PM ever.

Peter,

You are all the same HERE for the most part – based on the fact that you all high five Ezra and Brian on everything they post. Only Joan and a couple of others in addition to the liberals here call out Ezra and Brian when they think they are wrong.

And you will all vote for Harper no matter what you all actually think of him. Even if he is a fake conservative.

Jimmy said, “It’s funny reading how some conservatives here define Harper as a true conservative and other conservatives say that Harper is almost a liberal. Even conservatives can’t make up their mind on Harper or what conservative actually is.”

That guess that blows out of the water your other comments on how we conservatives are all the same, think alike, etc.

Jimmy, you are contradicting yourself … not for the first time.

Jimmy, it’s call being individuals that can think for themselves. You are correct on one thing is your attempt at an insult, being a conservative means slightly different things to different people. That is what happens when you have people that like to be independent and think for themselves. That is why conservative minded people react so negatively to the socialists’ tendency to group think and force conformity on everyone.

Most people can’t figure out what Trudeau stands for … we all know of his desire for power on the coat-tails of his daddy’s name not his own merit, but aside from that he keeps changing his mind depending on which crowd he is speaking with.

Brian Lilley is right. As disgusted as I (as a conservative) am with Harper’s lacklustre performance as a conservative PM (supposedly conservative, but I think his actions clearly define him as a blue liberal), I will be voting Conservative because all the alternatives are so much worse. I’d like to live in a country with a conservative government, a conservative Supreme Court, no kangaroo courts, laws protecting the unborn and a leader who really was a conservative and who could/would stand up to the Marxist CBC and come out of his Ottawa bubble and build conservatism in Canada, but Harper’s Canada is still marginally better than the all-out insane asylum it would become under Potboy, Tommie the Commie Mulcair or Treehugger. So yes, I’ll be holding my nose as a conservative and voting Conservative Party of Canada again this time.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday that Senate reform is dead “for the time being” in the wake of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling that said he can’t make any major changes to the upper chamber or abolish it outright without provincial consent. … In its landmark decision, the court said it needs the agreement of seven provinces with half the country’s population to set term limits on senators or allow for elections for Senate nominees. Jimmy Da Leftard espouses “Typically conservatives are only out for the rich and corporations and they don’t really care about the poor and middle class” I see he doesn’t follow politics (be it provincial or federal) as closely as he claims.

Just a few examples:
Earlier today, the Ontario (Liberal) government announced that it is “partnering with Cisco Canada to launch the largest job-creating investment in the history of the province’s tech sector.” We should naturally be skeptical of any deal that sees taxpayer dollars go to a firm that made over $2 billion in profit just last quarter. – Macleans Dec 13. 2013

Hudak lashed out at the Liberals for allocating “an astonishing $2.5 billion to a corporate welfare slush fund” that he said would be given out at the discretion of Liberal cabinet ministers. CTV – May 23. 2014

Canada’s addiction to corporate welfare was at its highest in 1984, and the federal government used to be the worst abuser. The federal handouts started shrinking in 1992 when a deficit-crippled Ottawa began weaning its greedy subsidy puppies. Now it’s the provinces which are the biggest abusers of government handouts. Quebec is the worst, having handed out a whopping $115 billion to its favoured corporate sons during those 20 years. At $47 billion in total handouts, Ontario isn’t as bad as Quebec. But Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne wants to ramp up the corporate welfare if elected premier, over and above the Liberals’ massive handouts to wind and solar. She’s pledged to “invest” $2.5 billion over 10 years to companies selected by the Liberals for hiring or expanding their businesses. – The Windsor Star May 15, 2014

Jason,

Well based on all the latest polls – the majority of Canadians “feel” that they haven’t been better off under Harper financially, so right or wrong from your point of view – it’s understandable that Canadians want to vote in a political party that is going to give a shit about the poor and middle class.

Typically conservatives are only out for the rich and corporations and they don’t really care about the poor and middle class or what Mitt Romney calls the 47% that he didn’t care about.
commented 2015-08-21 16:40:13 -0400
I agree to a degree with John Robson. This is Canada. All the major parties are left of centre. But consider the fact the Liberals will bring back section 13 the moment they get re-elected and the gun grabbing will again start with them. The NDP? I mean good God. That’s like telling my 10 year old I am tired and can she take over driving the car.
commented 2015-08-21 16:35:47 -0400
Fair enough argument. The NDP would be a disaster and can’t believe Canadians may actually empower them. I looked at the transcript of the debates and the most important issues appear to be Bill C51 and the economy. I think the back and forth on the economy will just go over the heads of Canadians and they vote based on how the “feel” about the economy themselves. From where I live people are spending and building like its the 80s, but could that change in months to come?
