Europe’s culture: Is it dying? Is the “identitarian” movement the cure?

Lauren SouthernRebel Commentator

Europe has been inundated over the past several decades with people who are very different from native Europeans. They express barbaric attitudes about female genital mutilation and honor killings, and are increasingly siloing themselves away from the broader culture.

In response, a new wave of nationalist “identitarian” groups have emerged with the aim of reinvigorating European culture. “Identitarian” groups like Generation Identity groups are youth-oriented and generally based around opposition to immigration. These groups are often associated with the alternative right. “Identitarian” groups have engendered criticism that they serve as a front for far-right or fascist ideologies.

Mainstream anti-immigrant groups have emerged as well. Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West (or "PEGIDA") is one example. These groups tend to have a broader base of support, but still lack mainstream political representation in most cases.

So are these groups on the right path? And if they are, can they keep themselves from succumbing to the racism and fascism of past European nationalist groups?

With me to discuss this topic is Martin Sellner, head of the Austrian chapter of the Generation Identity movement.

With me as well is Cathy Young, an American libertarian writer and essayist. She’s been investigating the so-called alternative right, and argues that the "alt right" are primarily racists.

I ask her if it is possible to oppose mass immigration and defend European culture without falling into fascism.

They can solve most of the problem very easily

Shut off the welfare.

‘Jay Kelly’ in another thread identified himself as a Canadian Muslim, here to ‘soften our views’. He is doing a bang up job wouldn’t you say? His arrogance, sarcastic passive aggressive insults and misogyny identify him for what he clearly is, a mohammedan.

Did you enjoy your last St. Patrick’s Day celebration? If you are not Irish, did you feel that your cultural identity was in any way threatened by all the Irish talk?

If your sense of identity requires other cultures to be squelched, maybe your culture isn’t viable anymore.

“You’ve just given away your real mental level. Are you a mohammedan? These traits are quite prominent in mohammedan culture. Perhaps in your family no women were ever treated respectfully or they didn’t deserve to be respected. If you can’t respect a woman, no matter how much you disagree with her views, you are not fit for a civilized society.”

I agree Karan, Jay is a mohammedan! And he’s definitely not fit for civilized society. I don’t even read his drivel, I just read the responses to him.

How to solve this? Close the borders to any new migrants & dismantling the social safety net would be a good start. The EU has to be eliminated.

Cathy has a very weak grasp of European history. I’d question her credentials as a libertarian as well.

Agreed.

From http://www.cathyyoung.net/ “I believe in judging people as individuals, not on the basis of membership in a group.”

Contradictory, no?

" the “alt right” are primarily racists"

All parties along the entire political spectrum are racist to some degree. The left side of the political spectrum are racist against their own culture masking it under the umbrella of inclusion, the right side of the political spectrum are racist as in self-preservation of their culture or exclusion. A happy medium is difficult to obtain for man has the desire and need to control his environment and any control may or can be construed as racist.

i.e.: The affirmative hiring practices for Canadian governmental positions – the criteria of not who is the best applicant through actual qualifications (education, experience) but rather if they are ethnically diverse. When an incident of racism against a white woman hit the airwaves the Liberals and their supporters claimed it was the Conservatives that enacted this policy – yet the truth of the matter was that the Liberals had initiated this policy: Jean Chrétien was Prime Minister at the time – The Embracing Change Initiative is launched. “In 2000, the President of the Treasury Board endorsed, on behalf of the Government of Canada, an Action Plan prepared by a Task Force on the Participation of Visible Minorities in the Federal Public Service."

Political racism is a matter of optics, racism exists in all political parties and stripes. The AfD in Germany for example (http://dailynous.com/2016/04/16/the-philosophers-of-germanys-anti-islam-political-movement/ ) are gaining in popularity, because it supports “the idea of banning mosques” which is in effort to preserve their own heritage and culture. That is just as racist as the Liberals in their affirmative hiring practices while banning qualified Caucasians, the difference is in the optics – one is exclusion the other inclusion.

Jay Kelly; You and your friends should combine your allowance and buy a milking machine. Then you and your three Muslim friends can sit around the machine while it gives you ‘pleasure’ while looking at pictures of Western girls. It is the only option as you and your friends must be so ugly and pathetic that no girl would voluntarily be in your company.

“I never really liked European culture, heavy on the baguette, unhealthy smoked meats, fattening beer, and furniture and cars that require specialized tools. We’d all live longer and have less marital disputes without it. May Europe just turn in on itself like a whirlpool and disappear into the night!”

Baguettes, smoked meats, and beer? That’s it? Then your palate has not experienced some of the amazing gastronomical European culinary delights, most great chefs have their roots from European kitchens/background. European pastries, savory stews and soups, fine wines, the list is endless. Furniture that require specialized tools? Sounds like Ikea. When I think of European made furniture I think of the heavy intricate carved desks and bureaus solidly crafted and not the cheap pre-fab knock offs by Ikea. Sounds like you have lived a stationary sheltered life, more’s the pity.

Lawrence O’Byrne, no disrespect intended.

Just try to use a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence and try to use a complete sentence.

Not just for me, but for all readers on here.

You have something important to say. Let us figure out a way for you to say it.

You think some Canadians identify as a mainstream muslim? By that you mean it is acceptable to honour kill someone in the immediate family because she dishonoured the family. Your casual description of mainstream muslim is acceptance of the muslim cult. Are you still that ignorant of what a muslim believes and what a muslim is willing to do for Allah? Are you really that fucking stupid Jay? By the way, stick a crowbar in your wallet and cough up 6 bucks a month you cheapskate.

Lawrence O’Byrne, as I said yesterday, please start each of you sentences with a capital letter. It indicates the start of a sentence.

Then try to form a complete sentence which ends in a period. A sentence has a subject and a verb at the very least.

Please do not use made-up words like “turdo” because it makes readers wonder what you might mean.

The Rebel provides a valuable service. Try to respect it.

lauran just to let you know i read pegida canada news every day and as does the rebel they report on atrocities committed by the muslims all over the world and what obama and clinton and the lefty media are doing to change the story from what actually happened to what they want to make it seemed like it happened , and the people commenting there are just like the comments on the rebel ,people do not want muslims in the country, there is nothing radical in that and those same people are as fed up with turdo and his policies as most are on this web site

Sorry, Lauren Southern, I could not see your report unless I paid as if you were a cheap hooker.

But I read your item about “native Europeans” and other Europeans. “Identitarian” is a term I never heard before but it interests me. For us in Canada the sense of national identity is one thing. For Europeans it is another.

There is a national identity “I am French” or “I am German” and so on. But there are other identities, which I guess we Canadians should appreciate because of our own background. “I am a secular Christian” or “I am a mainstream Muslim”, which tends to colour the water a bit.

You ask of these new groups: “can they keep themselves from succumbing to the racism and fascism of past European nationalist groups?”

It is an excellent question.
