LISTEN: Rapper Classified's song about laid-off oil sands workers is a hit

Rebel Staff

Hip-hop artist Classified has a new song about laid-off oil sands workers and it's quite catchy.

The song, titled 'Work Away' was uploaded to YouTube in January, but has only just begun to rise in popularity. It's one of 16 songs on his album 'Greatful'.

In the beginning of the song, voices of oil sands workers are heard. They say their names, where they're from and where they're stationed.

“Eighty per cent of the people I know on the east coast had to either move out west or they do two weeks out/one week home,” the rapper said. “Most of them are still working but a couple of them are having problems.”

The song was being written before the price of oil sank. Classified says he and David Myles (the man he collaborated with) could pen a sequel.

People who have never worked in the oil patch, will never understand the hard ships we endure.

That ‘gen’ is the bulk of the oil patch these days. They are the thirty something’s, with trucks and houses and families. If the music isn’t your style, at least appreciate the sentiment. I really liked it. It reflects the lives of a lot of ‘kids’ I know who are now laid off from the patch and scrambling to make ends meet.

Good to see at least a portion of the hiphop gen realizing that their fortunes are pegged to the health of the industries which employ them – now if it would ever sink in that the political left who exploit them for votes/power, are determined to shut down their life-sustaining industrial job base, then we might be getting back to the prosperous optimistic nation we were before we were turned into unemployed/under-employed debt slaves by kleptocratic socialists.
