Nanny State Ninny Award for January: Edmonton declares war on -- ICE RINKS

David MenziesMission Specialist

Is there a more iconic image of Canada than a backyard rink peppered with shinny enthusiasts?

Maybe it’s a generation gap that’s to blame but now, killjoy, environmentally-obsessed, safety conscious bureaucrats look at an ice rink and see bad citizens guilty of an injury-causing land modification.

Injury for who? Mother Earth? The kids? Both?

I don’t know but once you hear the story, you’ll probably agree that the state-appointed safety fascists in the City of Edmonton deserve the dubious honour of Nanny State Ninny for January.

The one thing that is not mentioned is that this was a preserved wetland and they were using treated city water to make your own rink in a barricaded section. These people have no concept of rules and regulations. They are willing to break into a sectioned off piece of land just for their own enjoyment. What else are they doing that is illegal just because they are too lazy to go 5 blocks to an already made rink.

As a person living in the Edmonton Metro region, I can say this was quite predictable. The nature of bureaucracy is such that, when a project has been completed another could be started. If there isn’t one, then make one up.
This is what drives the growth of “government” – not the elected officials, but the very existence of unionized bureaucrats.

They must really be desperate for cash to think this up.

I’d like to hear the interview with the politicians who created and support this, and see if they have a logical, concrete, specific cogent argument for it, that isn’t ideologically-based; though I doubt it. ;-/

Did no one point out to these 2 by-law officers that no ground was being disturbed because the rink was on a frozen pond? Frozen water? And once the ice melts on the pond in the spring no one will know the rink was ever there? Are we this lacking in common sense that we hire and elect idiots? We all are doomed. Which I guess from an enviro-fraud’s stand point that once we have aborted all our children and let our Muzzie friends take care of the rest and all civilization is dead, the earth will finally have the world to itself…and humanity will have been just a blip in Earth’s history. But where does this leave the enviro-nerds. You’ll be dead too. if you’re okay with that, then why wait? Why don’t you and your enviro-f**ks organize a mass rally and kill yourselves so that you can STOP being part of the problem RIGHT NOW? And then after you’re dead we’re going to be stuck deciding what we do with your dead body clutching your St. David Suzuki sign; do we bury you, at which point you’re toxic waste or do we cremate you only to add to the CO2 problem.. Justin Trudeau (I’ve taken to saying his name now instead of “Jesus Christ” as we shouldn’t take the Lord’s name in vain and I invite all Rebels to start doing the same), when is this madness going to end?

Edmonton is the city where nothing is done right.

Silly Hall has this amazing obsession with getting into everyone’s business – I’d say it’s freer in Moscow these days. Central planning is what Edmonton loves to do. The problem is that it never goes right.

Bridges that warp and remain unfinished months after they were supposed to be done. (This revelation doesn’t bode well for the new Walterdale Bridge, btw.)

A freeway system that has traffic lights. (You have to see it to believe it.)

And an amazing light-rail-transit system that travel no faster than 20 km/h and causes traffic jams. (In an effort to reduce the car’s carbon footprint, they only made it bigger.)

And best of all, whole departments in the City are so insulated, they never deal with other departments, even if they have to. (And that’s why the bridges are warped and the trains are broken.)

Yes, Edmonton. The city run by morons.

It’s bad enough that snow removal is still an alien concept for the city’s managers, but didn’t anyone get the memo that Edmonton is in Canada? (It’s not called Edmonton, Mexico.)

The normal year in Edmonton is about seven months of winter, followed by five months of road repair. It’s the only city in North America that could be considered third-world, judging by the condition of the roads.

And now, the City wants to tell people how to make their outdoor rinks? Here’s an idea: make them in June. That way they can double-duty as rinks and swamps. (Mosquitoes love swamps, which brings up Edmonton as the Mosquito Hell.)

Wayne Gretzky may have had the best stats, but he was not the greatest hockey player ever.

That honour should go to somebody like Bobby Orr or Maurice Richard.

Ruth Merriott, how on earth does clearing snow for a skate damage a designated natural area? In warm months surely people are allowed to enjoy the pond, watch the birds etc.? In David’s report he says the city bylaw states ,you are not allowed to “modify the land in a way likely to cause injury”, injury of habitat , people?
All they have to do is post a thin ice, potential danger, at your own risk sign, and they would be off the hook . We don’t need to pay a bylaw officer to drive around in a new vehicle to slap us with tickets and fines at every turn.

I skated on a creek behind my house when I was a kid. We had the same path through the snow to get down to it that we used every time. There is no damage done, especially in winter months when soil is frozen. As far as the thickness of the ice was concerned, we were schooled on checking its thickness, considering the variables and covering our own butts. We always skated in groups, knew and were prepared for any possibility. I don’t like skating on rinks, I like less populated creeks, ponds and lakes. You should try Vermillion Lake between Canmore and Banff, clear as glass, nothing like it.

RUTH MERRIOTT, heres a thought….let people decide if that pond is safe enough for skating. We (Canadians) do not need anyone to decide for us. We actually have a brain in our heads and can still use it – can you? Do you not think this pond has been used for years, probably without incident? And (heaven forbid) should someone fall through and die then there is no one to blame but the individuals involved – not some useless bureaucratic institution. Life isn’t without risk – haven’t you figured that out yet? Perhaps too late for you. Me, I want the freedom to choose for myself.

People who are proposing this may not have a happy life. They just want to upset other people who are enjoying life! I keep on asking why does this FEW wants to change many things that affects the MANY? Like that O Canada! STOP IT! We are Canadian and citizen of this country of CANADA! We the MANY will decide not the FEW! But you can say what you want but not ENFORCE it without any consultations! And please do something else that is beneficial for the Taxpayers! Many don’t have jobs right now! Just imagine recreation of the people you are trying to stop!! Idiots!

What a bunch of idiots!

Ruth merriott…
It all starts with something like this…
And then the liberal left-wing Marxist bolshevik communists start ever increasing the size of government and ratcheting down our freedoms to what we can and cannot do… just imagine a world for your children where everything was illegal inless you had permission. Can’t you see it happening in front of your very eyes..???
We are becoming less citizenry and more like subjects by the hour and any compliance from us feeds the machine.

Some extra information would save TheRebel and these commenters from the “Jumping to Conclusions” award. The pond in question was a designated natural area where human alterations will damage its state. It also serves as stormwater catchment, and the City of Edmonton is studying why ice can be unpredictably thin and weak on these ponds—-worker fell through only metres from a safe ice test. Parents ridicule the City but who would be the first to sue when something happened? Local community leagues would love their help in maintaining the existing community ice rinks.

Holy smokes, that is ridiculous. First tobogganing, now pond skating. Where better to have safe outdoor ice than Edmonton! They are trying to take away the best memories a kid in Canada can have. I can’t see myself complying or paying the fines. Get the whole neighbourhood involved. They can’t put everyone in jail. It is every Canadians right to skate on outdoor ice. What about the Rideau Canal? Is that next? What about ice fishing?

I’m so angry about this I don’t know what to say except that is it time to decapitate the nanny state.
My Metis blood churns with rage at these bureaucrats using our taxes to further enslave us with their Saul Alnski style mechanism of control.
LEAVE US ALONE YOU GLORIFIED TIN POT BULLIES.
We’re getting a little red under the collar. We’re pissed.
Got a regulation for that too?

There is nothing that Socialist like more, than having complete control of their citizens. You will wipe your arse with your LEFT hand, LEFT being the only option of choice. You will only use toilet paper that is colored RED and the Toilet Roll will be mounted on the LEFT side of your toilet, even if the wall is 1.5 m away. You will wash your LEFT hand upon completion. When going to work, you will hop on your LEFT foot to the nearest bus stop…..

Terrible , useless bureaucrate looking for easy money, somone will get hurt one day writing those stupid fines.

If you are all wondering where this formidable left wing Marxist effort is coming from
Look up Karl Marx.
And then The Bolshevik Revolution and what it lead to..
Then look up Lennon and what he did and where he took the country.
Then look up Trotsky and Stalin and the absolutely horrific things that Stallin did after he killed Trotsky for a power grab.
Don’t say it couldn’t happen here because it’s happening right before your very eyes and it all starts with increasing the government powers.
commented 2016-01-31 12:30:38 -0500
I hope they don’t pay it. I hope they challenge it and win. Stupidity Award goes tho the dumb twat that issued the ticket. You my friend are a fucking twat! Go cry in a corner like the wimpshit you are.

They don’t want anyone to enjoy freedom in any form. They certainly don’t want any form of individualism where a potential rising star may appear, and bring honour to someone and their family, and their community. The communists want everyone to believe that we are all the same. Which is why they are bleeding the wealth and destroying democracies, so that the UN will take control. All of these restrictions are related to the UN’s Agenda 21 Plan.

Wow, that is insane!
No wonder the great one love Harper.

These overpaid, under-worked bureaucrats should be met at the front door by a quote from Clint Eastwood “Get off my lawn”

No, this is what happens when you vote Liberals into positions of Police/Politics/Press/Professors. Is it too late for Canada?

This is what happens when too may people work for the government. or the gov hires students fresh out of university with Environmental/Social/Human Rights/Gender Fluidity/Feminism/Art degrees etc.

One has to realize that the Nanny State Ninnies are, in reality, a bunch of cowardly, gutless, couch potatoes who have no competence in any sport or recreational enjoyment! They are mindless nutcases and want to make everyone else in their own image and likeness so that they will not feel like the absolute freaks they are!
commented 2016-01-31 08:49:54 -0500
Nanny state governments keep changing the rules to justify their existence.

Most elements of government are completely useless and/or hugely over staffed.

This is a Canada thing and a worldwide thing.

Listen Canada, if you want to really fk over big government, stop spending. This will collapse government revenues.
commented 2016-01-31 08:40:38 -0500
Acura…..you can add civil disobedience to your list.

this whole mess isn’t going to get better until we send a clear message to the political class. I recommend fire, lead and rope.
