O Canada is under attack! Liberal MP's bill will make O Canada lyrics 'politically correct'

Rebel Staff

Liberal MP Mauril Belanger is trying to change the lyrics to O Canada for a second time.

Belanger, who has Lou Gehrig's disease, is losing his singing voice and wants the anthem changed because he feels the patriotism is exclusive to men.

He intends to table a private member's bill that would change the lyrics from true patriot love “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.”

Last April, an identical bill was defeated at second reading by a vote of 144-127.

Now, with a Liberal majority, political correctness might be about to take over our anthem.

God help us.

A history lesson:

http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/o-canada/

“O Canada” is Canada’s national anthem. Originally called “Chant national,” it was written in Québec City by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier (words in French) and composer Calixa Lavallée (music), and first performed there on 24 June 1880. …

“Amendment Proposals "

Since the passage of the National Anthem Act in 1980, the lyrics to “O Canada” have remained unchanged, but there have been several proposals to amend them. In June 1990, Toronto City Council voted in favour of recommending to the federal government that the wording “our home and native land” be changed to “our home and cherished land” (to be more inclusive of non-native-born Canadians), and that the phrase “in all thy sons command” be changed to “in all of us command” (to bring it closer to the original “thou dost in us command” and be more gender-inclusive).

Similarly, in 2002, Senator Vivienne Poy introduced a bill proposing that “in all thy sons command” be changed to “in all of us command,” but the bill died on the order paper. In the following years, several groups criticized the reference to God in the English version and to Catholicism in the French version as being anti-secular.

On 3 March 2010, Governor General Michaëlle Jean announced a plan in her Speech from the Throne to have Parliament review the “original gender-neutral wording of the national anthem.” Public sentiment against changing the anthem was so strong that the Prime Minister’s Office announced two days later that the plan would be abandoned.

On 30 September 2013, the issue of reverting to gender-neutral lyrics was revived by the Restore Our Anthem campaign, headed by Senator Poy, author Margaret Atwood, former Prime Minister Kim Campbell and Senator Nancy Ruth, among others.

“Now, with a Liberal majority, political correctness might be about to take over our anthem.”
Agreed.

Even when you listen to the original version of “The Maple Leaf Forever”, the lyrics are simply very pro British and certainly not racist towards the French or anyone else. It seems that the left really has this Tourette’s syndrome like tendency to censor anything to do with our real heritage.

Political correctness. The loss of free speech and freedom of thought.

IF it is changed, that is the last nail in the coffin for me. I’m out. Either I’ll move to a remote place up north, or out of country.

Is this the most important thing on canadians minds. Liberal buffoons.

If this bullshit is rammed down our throats….simply refuse to sing it…….your silence sings louder than any protest that the liberals refuse to hear……

When I fell out of bed this morning I stood up and tore my shirt, and said, Oh God in heaven, people of the earth, and those from backwards ville Ottawa, we got to change the national Anthem or my heart will explode. Not. Why do we have a federal Gov’t if this is the crap we get.

Fuck You Belanger and anyone else who attempts to change our National Anthem! I will sing it the way it was written loud and proud until the day I die!

If a product is introduced in the marketplace and it sucks, it stays on the shelves and it is eventually withrawn. I just find it amazing that we as consumers have unlimited personal power when it comes to choosing our soap or brand of hotdogs. And yet we willingly allow these miscreants in government to Lord it over us , accepting whatever their liberal sick minds decide to impose on us.
SCREW THEM. Just sing the National Anthem the way it has been for the majority of our lives.

I find Mr. Thiessen’s comments interesting, as I had not known previously of these changes made to the song during World War 1. I can remember reading some years back about musicologists making the discovery that “O Canada” quite possibly originated from an old French Habitant composition that in turn dated from the time of the French Revolution. It seems to be an odd story that surrounds this song, with its origins and how it evolved over the years to it being the official national anthem (and not without a good deal of controversy).

‘True North Strong and Free’ is all I need to hear to know where I live. Fuck these PC people… Stay in Toronto you bunch of goofy urbanite assholes.

I wonder if he is aware of the other stanzas, particularly the third and fourth.

He should be in line for euthanasia. Probably one of the bills he’s pushing

Dallas said: “Next in line: God will have to go as well to conform to the Marxist ideology.” God will have to go as it is commonly known refers to a Christian God. Given Trudope’s leanings, to be replaced by Mohammed!

The Lieberals are baaaaaack! Surprised this revision does not contain some ode to the Lieberals! Perhaps that is yet to come!

If folks commenting here understood any history they would know that his proposed change would actually return the lyrics closer to one of the versions most widely used in the early 1900s: “True patriot love thou dost in us command.” That line was CHANGED to “in all thy sons command” at the time of the First World War, presumably to honour men in the armed forces. People, like myself, who support this, care about that – about our history. We are are not necessarily doing this from anything close to a PC perspective. It would help if everyone wasn’t so damned ideological and looked just for a few seconds beyond the scope of their Party lines.

Too bad there are no proposed changes made to the french version.

I just send Mr. Bélanger this email:

Dear Mr. Bélanger;

Please withdraw your private member’s bill concerning our national anthem.
Changing the wording because of political correctness is foolishness.
Remember, putting an adjective in front of a important word like correct makes normal people very suspicious.

I guess they have nothing better to do. After the selfies and patting each other on the back I guess it’s time to deal with serious issues of gender. They have issues identifying each other.
commented 2016-01-25 17:04:39 -0500
Let the PC guys/girls change it all they want, it’s a woosy anthem now with all the previous changes. The Maple Leaf Forever, was and should continue to be our Anthem.
commented 2016-01-25 17:03:43 -0500
These are just words. If the government wants to change them, it has that right. We must accept progress and move on!
commented 2016-01-25 16:45:14 -0500
Leave it alone already, like Dallas said, we are all included in “thy sons” command, but obviously the MP is not bright enough to know this.

This is how a country loses its identity. One chink at a time.
commented 2016-01-25 15:53:25 -0500
The anthem won’t change in my house. Neither will the term “Dominion of Canada”, “Dominion Day” and a host of other things that the Liberals have gone out of their way to destroy.

Potvin I am with you.

When I was born in 1957, the Canadian flag still had green maple leaves and an Irish harp with boobs. Before the end of that year, the leaves had turned red and the harp was flat as a pancake. They also screwed up the Scottish part.
Lest we forget.

I couldn’t care less what Parliament does. It won’t make any difference to how I sing it. In fact, if we could just get rid of Notley and Vancouver’s Gregor Robertson, I’d like to be singing “Oh, Western Canada” in an entirely new nation.
