OLG scolds parents -- while marketing lottery tickets to kids

David MenziesMission Specialist

In trying to deflect attention from the latest OLG scandal, their spokesman's strategy was to lecture parents, telling them to refrain from giving lottery tickets to their children.

If this is a concern to them, why offer scratch tickets that appeal to a young demographic?

And since OLG enjoys a monopoly on lottery ticket gambling, why do they the need to resort to costly marketing campaigns to sell what only they can sell?

Ostensibly, the reason for having a government gaming industry has something to do with social responsibility but to be convincing, the first thing they should do is practice what they preach.

Ontario’s economic and moral disintegration is pulling all of Canada down with it. Glad you’re on the job, David.

About the only point raised here with any validity to it was the “suck and blow” of advertising and enticing people to play while pushing the “know your limit” bit.
As Jimmy Da Silva mentions below, a lot of the games used are more adult games, like Scrabble. I mean really, you might as well have used Crossword as your example. As to the ones that are not, they are also not currently popular kids games, but older titles used to tap into peoples nostalgia.
And you can’t be serious to think that sales would be just as high for some generic crown and anchor game as they would be for glitzy cards with a theme that draws people in, whether it be tapping their nostalgia, or licensing the big flavour of the month like the Deal or no Deal ones were.

The OLG’s so called modernization plan fails to have any public support. First the OLG tried to force large cities to accept mega casinos in their downtown core, only to realize later that the public and municipalities did not want such facilities. Now the OLG is pressing ahead privatizing their slots and casino operations, which means no future job guarantees for the thousands of OLG employees as well as employees losing their Ontario Pension plans. The OLG inability to work with unions is why currently there is a labour dispute and the OLG has locked out employees at Woodbine, Brantford and Sudbury simply because the OLG doesn’t want to guarantee worker’s pensions! The OLG to brass believe privatization is better for front line workers, but not for those in the corporate office which many make over $100,000 salary as posted on the Ontario governments sunshine list. Time for the OLG to rethink its obligations to the public and its workers.

Newsflash – adults play all the board games you just mentioned. What kid today wants to play fucking Scrabble when you consider video games? This is a total non-story.

Gambling, boozing and commercial sex (escorts) are all ok now the gummint runs the rackets – as they build a monopoly on vice markets formerly run by the mob and bikers.

It’s all soooooo progressive, just indulge your vices and " pay your fair share".
