A women's rights activist is calling out Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson to see if he will approve a 'Draw Muhammad' event at City Hall.
A pro-Hijab event is already scheduled to be held at City Hall on February 25.
In regards to the pro-Islamic Hijab Day event, Watson wrote, “I am not in a position to intervene in this difference of opinion you have with the event organizers. This volunteer initiative seems to be focused on removing perceived stigma around an article of clothing. It is not my role to tell people what they should wear.”
According to CIJ News, the mayor said that event bookings are not an endorsement of content by City Council.
The activist asked Mayor Watson if he would allow supporters of free speech like herself to organize a “Draw Mohammed” contest in the same spot the Hijab event will take place.
CIJ News reports that he has yet to respond to the request.
