Question of the Day: Do Canadian cities need "No Cat-calling" zones

Emily PrattRebel Correspondent

In New York City, "NO CAT CALLING" signs are popping up, encouraging men to stop harassing women on the street.

We asked if you think Canadian cities need a similar campaign.

Not one mention yet about multiculturalism – shouldn’t the men from other cultures be allowed to freely express their culture? As noted below, there are legal thresholds beyond which “free expression” becomes intimidation or assault. The shutdown or intimidation of free speech is one way of guaranteeing a mono-culture. Perhaps some counter-signs are needed, “stop forcing your totalitarian culture on me”? No, on second thought, it would take too long to explain why totalitarian is bad even if “the right people” are in charge.

Yes there should be signs, flashing lights, loud bells, strict enforcement, and draconian penalties for cat-calling. I’m getting tired of all the attention.

The internet is a wonderful place for role play. Hypothetical this hypothetical that….

Glenn Craig – you are indeed correct. I am sizzling.

A movie in Rome, you say … just what role do you have in mind?

Liza, I live in rural Ontario. My post about the three men was hypothetical in the interest of defining what is and is not acceptable, what is and what is not harassment. But I do get honked at and leered at and jeered and whistled at a lot. Maybe it’s a small town thing.

You must live in a really bad neighbourhood Joan. I’m either really lucky or really ugly. I think your average woman on an average day isn’t threatened with sodomy by three men at the same time, while she is walking down the street, even in a major city. I’m not saying it could never happen, just that it is not the norm, as you make it sound.

Joan, If what you say is in fact the horn blowing of men who’s feminist mothers never bothered to teach them appropriate techniques of breaking the ice in courtship and not ….blowing your own horn….then I could reasonably assume that you are HOT STUFF……could I interest you perhaps in a movie I am producing in Rome?……..:-)

We could have people in uniform driving around in little electric vehicles, with a megaphone, writing tickets. Hell of a good make work project. We could hire students at 15 bucks an hour.

I get cat called all the time as I walk for exercise. Honked at, leered at by guys who sometimes I’m afraid are going to have an accident because of how long their eyes are off the road. Also by groups of men who yell obscenities and laugh. I ignore them all. I mean, who cares?

But if some stranger, man or woman, is close enough to me on the sidewalk to grab my ass, throw a punch or deliver a death threat and does so, that’s a crime.

The first is just strangers being silly. The second is behaviour that can escalate to bodily harm. It is harassment. The cat calls are not.

And just for Liza, if two or three strange men follow me so close on my heels I can hear them threaten to forcibly sodomize me – except, you know, not in such nice language – that is also harassment.

If some stranger touches me inappropriately, I tell him in no uncertain terms to stop. If he stops, good. My rebuke was effective. If not, I’ll ask for help from others around me. If he still doesn’t stop, I take out my phone and start recording in case I need to be a witness in court.

A hundred years ago I was cat called on the streets of Rome, and a few other European cities, fond memories. Is that misogynist or pandering to men, I can’t keep up Joan, but then she has some schoolin I don’t. She calls me both, so its probably both.

Back so long ago I don’t recall exactly when, a measure like this was enacted with municipal law enforcement in Rome on a street that was noted for cat calling and fanny pinching. This was in response to complaints from American tourists….a protest led by Italian women struck the ordinance down…….:-)

I find it puzzling that the controversial sex education curriculum in Ontario does not include one word on the subject of what is appropriate courtship….just lots of criticism as to what is not consensual….sort of makes me think that if it was not in fact composed by Ben Levin….then it was probably composed by lesbians with malignant penis envy who want to chaperone all things heterosexual….what is it those people are called…I am getting old and forgetful of names…oh yes….feminists.

This was initiated in New York by a privately owned company that has a feminist agenda…it is not a government initiative…yet.

To all the women who resent cat calls…let me assure you….the day will surely come when you no longer suffer it…but that will not be an event in your life that you will celebrate.

So woman no longer want to be complimented on their dress, well it’s going to be hard to stop me from complimenting ladies on thier nice well chosen attire. I guess it’s not welcome when I say " that’s a nice outfit you have today" or “where did you buy that dress you look beautiful in it” or as happened to my X in Paris "that jackets is so nice who is your designer I didn’t have the heart to say I got it for her on sale for $19.99 at the Bon Ton in Buffalo.
EVERY BODY LIKES A COMPLIMENT TRY DRESSING UP AND SEE
