Remember, Notley: Raising Alberta's sales tax requires a referendum

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

My guest Paige MacPherson, Alberta Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, came on to discuss the Notley NDP's reckless spending.

She notes that they are "floating the idea of raising the sales tax" but explains that by law, this can only be done in Alberta if the public votes for the increase in a referendum.

This is Notley’s Achille’s Hell in two ways …

She cannot create a new tax without a referendum.

Of course, Notley will demand legislation to dismiss the referendum requirement. Which brings us to the second reason why Notley will fail …

Introducing such legislation will effectively be the tinder that will light the fires of civil war. NDP MLAs must be put on notice – if they agree to overturn the referendum requirement, they will come under attack. Every single NDP MLA will become a target.

I really would like to believe Paige when she says that the sales tax proposal will have to go to a referendum, but you can be certain that the NDP right now are looking into how the Manitoba NDP got around the same type on law in their province.

Now granted in Manitoba the law was about restricting raising the existing PST, not creating a PST, but the principle is the same.

The Alberta NDP will look for a way around it and if they cannot find a way around it they will make one by passing an amendment to the law or a repealing it altogether.

The NDP will just pass a law that allows them to ignore the referendum or repeal the law that requires them to hold a referendum just like the Manitoba NDP did.

Thank heaven for the taxpayer protection act in Alberta, to protect what’s left of the Alberta advantage.

Since when has the NDP ever obeyed the idea of citizen referendums? Remember NDP ( and Liberal) means communism. No freedom of choice there!
