Save O Canada

Richmond Hill banned O Canada. We're fighting back.

On May 11th, Richmond Hill’s town council voted 5 to 4 against singing O Canada to start council meetings.

Town councillors had just voted to ban the Lord’s Prayer, and O Canada was suggested as an alternative. But councillors, including Mayor Dave Barrow, voted no to that too. And they offered up the most bizarre reasons for this politically correct decision.

They said O Canada takes too long to sing; that it is an “inappropriate” song; even that it should only be sung a sporting events. But what clinched the vote, according to the mayor, was an absurd opinion from the town lawyer that singing O Canada would actually be illegal.

Seriously. Some lawyer cooked that up. Because of the line, “God keep our land glorious and free.”

How can Canada’s official song – written more than 100 years ago, and enshrined under the National Anthem Act – possibly be illegal?

Only a fool would think that. But on Richmond Hill’s town council, that’s a majority.

Let’s fight back. Let’s save O Canada from these politically correct politicians.

1. Sign our petition:

We the undersigned Canadians demand that the town council of Richmond Hill reverse their outrageous decision, passed by a 5 to 4 vote on May 11, 2015, against singing O Canada to start council meetings.

2. Help us pay for an independent, professional opinion poll.

Richmond Hill’s town council are politicians, so what they really care about is being reelected. If we can show that the majority of their own voters are furious with them, that might help them get a dose of common sense.

We have commissioned the independent pollster, Campaign Research, to do a statistically valid poll of Richmond Hill, asking:

  • Are you aware that Richmond Hill’s town council voted against singing O Canada before council meetings?
  • How do you feel about their vote against singing O Canada? Do you strongly agree with their decision, somewhat agree, disagree, or strongly disagree?

That poll costs approximately $2,000. Can you please contribute $10, $50 or even $100 to help us pay for it? We’ll let you know the results when we get them!

The results are in!

You can download the official polling report here.

God keep our land, glorious and free!
