Senate’s Obesity Report: Education and information are good but bans and taxes never work

Brian LilleyRebel Co-Founder

Obesity is a problem and too many Canadians are overweight, but the latest report from the Senate calling for taxes and bans, is not the way to go no matter what the activists say.

I agree with some of the Senate report and there are some recommendations that are worth looking at.

But taxes, bans and more nanny state, never work.

And, the report relies on a fallacy that says it’s more expensive to feed children a healthy diet. This simply isn’t true but seems to be an idea pushed by those in favour of higher taxes on foods they don’t like.

Make recess a priority and let kids run and play.

Make phys-ed mandatory and let each kid improve on their ability. You can’t expect an inflexible person touch their toes, but you can expect them to stretch a little further than they have before.

they are always looking for an excuse to tax the shit out of us for anything but they never admit they are the ones who caused the problems in the first place. everything we eat is loaded with chemicals and preservatives we cant even pronounce, the livestock animals in the food chain are constantly injected with growth hormones and antibiotics, we are eating GMO crap that has been known to cause tumors on lab rats, they fluoridated our drinking water to dumb us down and the list goes on. what is it going to take for people to realize that establishment food is being used as a weapon against us. it is raising hell with our immune systems and fucking up our genetics. also think about the country that we live in where on average we have 6 months of winter and the cost of exporting fruits and vegetables are too expensive to buy thanks to our artificially deflated dollar value. the lifestyles we live are not like our ancestors where they had to farm, hunt , grow their own gardens and do manual work. even many hutterites are quite porky as well and they get more exercise than most of us do. this unrealistic body image obsession is going too far, not everybody is going to look like an anorexic Hollywood celebrity. even most of them are hard core alcoholics, chain smokers and druggies. let us all fucking die the way we want and leave us alone already.

Instead of making sugary food more expensive through taxes, what say we make healthy choices less expensive? Like removing the dairy subsidies to increase competition and making dairy products cheaper.

They can start by leading by example – making it law that all MP expensed dinners must be 1200 calories as recommended in the “sedentary” chart of the Canada food guide, and put any member over “ideal weight” on an legally mandated 2300 calorie vegan diet – otherwise each will pay a hypocrisy tax proportional to their over calorie intake.

Lead by example or get out of the preaching biz.

Eat less and move more.

That easy.

Taxes and bans?

Money grabs by the nanny state.

Nothing more.

Andrew right on the money. The people do not seem to get that personal freedom requires personal responsibility.

I agree Brian with healthy food not being more expensive. Instead of banning & taxing why not start programs for adults in poorer areas on how to cook. Good home cooked healthy meals do not cost a fortune if you know what you’re doing. When grocery shopping I sometimes look to see what is in the cart of someone who may be earning a lower end salary & usually that cart is filled with sugary pop, potato chips, cookies, etc with no fresh veggies or fruit, very little meat & bread.
For what it would cost a family of five to eat at a fast food place, you could spend the same or slightly more to purchase wholesome food & feed that same family of five probably three hearty, healthy dinners providing you knew how to shop & prepare the meals. Now that would be money well spent by the gov’t & a win win for everyone. Eating at McDonald’s is not cheap anymore.

More proof that Liberalism is a Mental Disorder.

Andrew,
Correct, that’s what happens when you relieve people of their duty of self-responsibility.

And this program is another reason to get more general revenues by attaching a moral justification to it.

With free healthcare, get loaded, get stoned, chain smoke, eat all the fkg junk food you can lay your hands on.

And let the healthcare system deal with the rest.

Ah, socialist utopia strikes again.
