Yesterday at around 2 o’clock a.m., a radical Islamist named Omar Mateen walked into a gay night club in Florida and shot 103 people, killing 50. Having pledged allegiance to ISIS despite being an American citizen, Mateen was a soldier for the Islamic State.
He was openly and unapologetically homophobic, according to his parents. He was disgusted after seeing two men kiss and often spoke about his hatred for gay men. Today, after one of the worst Islamic terrorist attacks in American history, there are a lot of questions we must ask. There’s a lot we don’t know but there are a few things we do know.
In a free and peaceful society like ours, no one should be afraid to be themselves or go out in public and no one should feel like they are a target simply because of who they are and who they love. This was an act of war, carried out by an agent with allegiance to our enemy.
In the war against Islamic extremism, we’re not only losing, we’re failing to even come to terms with basic facts.
Omar Mateen was not a lone wolf terrorist. He was an Islamist soldier at war against Western civilization.
He was not a lone wolf. He was an agent, listening to the commands of his leaders.
This is not just another mass shooting. Comparing this attack to other deadly shootings in the US will not soften the Islamists resolve to murder innocent people. We must face facts.
As we wait to learn more about Mateen and the cowardly, horrific attack he carried out, we do know we must stand in solidarity with the families and communities grieving today. And we know who the enemy is.
Radical Islamists have declared war against us over and over again. They have engaged in war against us again and again.
We can’t win the war until we first acknowledge, then take aim at our enemy.
