More booze, more points? Here's why the LCBO should stop giving out Air Miles

David MenziesMission Specialist

When you shop at the LCBO, you get Air Miles. So? Well, there are a few problems with that arrangement.

The LCBO brags about promoting "socially responsible drinking" -- but doesn't rewarding consumers the more booze they buy negate that?

Did you know that LCBO's Air Miles program costs them an estimated $20 million a year?

That means Loyalty One gets that money, rather than the provincial government, who could spend it on...

(Then again, maybe it's a good thing that money doesn't go to Kathleen Wynne...)

PLUS: The LCBO appears to be breaching the advertising guidelines of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission.

The rules say "buyers clubs" and similar initiatives are "unacceptable."

So how does the LCBO get away with having an Air Miles program?

Watch and find out! It's an abuse of power, folks.

@john Kanold – Liberals and NDP don’t understand economies of scale: they prefer to bottleneck the bottlenecks in this case. Of course, that’s what happens when you build governments our of career bureaucrats—they literally cannot see it any other way; it would threaten all they know in life. Wynne’s resume was/is the prognosticator for all of her politics.

Jeezuz Dave , what are you thinking? Without this small benefit from the Ontario state liquor monopoly, I’d never be able to build up enough points to take me and my aching liver on a vacation to recoup. Then come back fresh and revived and ready to perform my primary duty as a responsible citizen of the soviet socialist state of Onterrible – consume! Must consume! Must pay consumption tax – must consume an pay tax!

My biggest beef about LCBO is how they report collecting a little tax as if it was a huge profit. 5 billion profit on 40 billion in sales, on a product with 300 percent markup? Yet bozo Ontarians think this is a cash cow. If LCBOs where closed and sobeys sold booze, they cold buy for 10, sell for 30, pay 15 in tax and we would make lots of tax money. LCBO loses over 10 billion a year in taxes/waste.

Why are beer stores dives and LCBOs palaces? One is a private (non-Canadian) other is government. One profits as much as possible, one does not care about profit.

Doesn’t matter Menzoid.

We have ADOLF HITLER WITH A VAG IN QUEENS PARKYES, NAZI PIG FUCKING WYNNE!!!

The Communist/NAZI PIG FUCKING WYNNE Manifesto summarises Marx and Engels’ theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles”. It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then finally communism.

I like my little independent liquor store in my small town of Northern Alberta. I wonder how its existence will be continued to be allowed now that we have NDP…less than four years is my guess.

LCBO
“Sucking and Blowing” simultaneously,
on par with the rest of them.
Just saying…

Someone high up in OPSEU must have a buddy over at the air miles program. That’s how it works. Special interest groups with unfettered power look after their friends, and as always in Ontario, what is good for the consumer is the least of their concern.

That is progressive and big government control for ya. The minions have to follow the rules but the bureaucracies don’t. Good for you Ontario (which I used to call home). The “Control Board” is only one of the most unnecessary and poorly conceived administrative mechanisms ever devised by liberal control freaks.

Great points. I never knew that. Thanks Menzoid!
