The Rebel celebrates 8-month anniversary -- thanks to you!

Rebel Staff

Eight months ago, we shot our first video in my living room!

Now, 1,686 videos and millions of views later, we’re about to unveil a high tech studio, and launch a daily TV-style talk show.

We have tons of written content at TheRebel.meida, too, of course, from blogs to shareable memes.

From May to the end of September, our growth rate was more than 20% per month. Lately our audience has been bigger than at the old Sun News Network!

We did all this without a marketing budget. It’s all natural sharing, through social media and even people e-mailing each other.

Our audience truly feels like they’re our partners, actively part of what we do. That's because they are, as the incredible response to our crowdfunding drive has demonstrated.

TheRebel.media really is unique in the world of Canadian media. As we told you: while the union that represents Canadian journalists is actively campaigning against the Conservative Party, their own members are reporting on the election!

Only TheRebel.media gives you an alternative AND encourages you to get involved.

Remember to watch the election results with us LIVE on October 19, and remember:

No matter who wins, The Rebel will be here to bring you the fearless news and commentary you've come to expect -- and a lot more.

Thank you for bringing us this far!

Help build The Rebel’s new studio, literally brick by brick!

Glenn: advertisers aren’t worried about subscribing to bulk click links services: they can shrug their shoulders and explain that they don’t pick the sites. But the revenues are pitiful. Real advertising revenues come from panel purchases that stay fixed on site, or at the top of a video segment. You won’t see that on the Rebel.

Jeez…I just got an ad for women’s tall boots from THE BAY…..how did they know I miss men’s tall boots going out of style and becomming unavailable…..those boots look so good I am tempted to become a cross dresser.

Terry…I wouldn’t be so sumg about the advertisers shying away from this site….I just got a chance to compare the ads that come up on my session with those on somebody else’s…..and ads are indeed targeted based on the users other internet activity….I don’t mind…I probably agreed to that on some fine print page or other..and it seems that some pretty big players are unafraid to advertise their outdoor outfitting wares….guess no feminist SJW’s are going to try to initiate a boycott…..not that they would impact sales anyway.

I recently bought a reproduction of a Confederate Griswold cap and ball pistol at an outfitter that specializes in such trinkets….I am a big fan of the show Hell on Wheels……I saw their ads come up here for weeks after that…..same as the coins I ordered from the MINT to award as prizes at a target shooting tournament….guess what….the Mint was an advertiser on this site for some time thereafter….now get on your SJW keyboard and your high horse and complain bitterly to your MP about that……:-)

Terry, while I agree with you that a lot of the ‘rebuttals’ leave something to be desired (as do many of the original comments by the trolls), many are also well thought out and I don’t agree with your overall assessment of them.

“I really think they do unintentionally add something valuable to this site, which is not their comments, but many of the rebuttals their comments generate. "
Ken: have you noted that there aren’t actually many “rebuttals”? Lots of raging about commies and trolls, of course, but not much reasoned counter-argument or debunking of factual assertions. Trying to drown someone out with insults isn’t really “rebuttal” after fourth grade.

“I am sure Ezra would love nothing more to have well known companies advertising on the Rebel.”
Until about a month ago, the Rebel had a rate sheet you could access under the “advertise” tab above. It was a fascinating document: it detailed who the Rebel actually attracts (primarily old males from Alberta and Ontario), and provided multiple different advertising options. You could have a un-skippable ad, for example, at the beginning of one of the video. You could advertise in the large display area at the top of the home page, or buy a smaller panel ad on the right hand scroll bar. There were about a dozen options at different rates, which is normal for a commercial website. What’s fascinating is that no-one ever chose to advertise there. Instead, the space is used for bottom-of-the-barrel click-counter ads, or the Rebel’s own promo.
The absolute lack of quality ads, plus the disappearance of the rate sheet, are two very bad signs if you’re a Rebel fan (like me.)

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think that if TheRebel had not started up, out of the ashes of the Sun, we wouldn’t know most of what has been exposed about Junior and Tom. There has been a concerted effort, on a global scale, to weaken Canada, but I feel there are still enough of us, to get PM Harper another majority. TheRebel has provided us with much needed facts, to realize that our country stands to fall, if power falls into the wrong hands. I am so grateful, to be able to comment with others who feel as I do about our country!

Sharon,

No, they see the value in having a national broadcaster and all that CBC does. I trust you support a democracy and if most people support the CBC, then you just have to accept that.

Jimmy
Goes to show you the mindset of some people who would vote against a party just because of cuts to the CBC. Guess as long as they are being entertained, they don ’t care what happens. Pretty pathetic!
commented 2015-10-16 21:31:16 -0400
Liberals made more cuts
commented 2015-10-16 21:30:46 -0400
Sharon,

The liberals may more cuts to the CBC compared to Harper. If he didn’t support the CBC, he would had made it an election promise to gut it, but he knows that Canadians would have his head on a platter and he would lose the election JUST ON THAT.

Every single poll, including The Rebel’s CBC poll has Canadians supporting the CBC over defunding. CBC.ca is also one of the most popular websites in Canada with millions of people going there every single day. The CBC is actually quite popular and well liked, but people choose to get their news and information from the internet over broadcast television.

I told you why I mentioned Peter and Liza.

" Too bad: it was fun keeping track of the use stats. Old males from Alberta and Ontario, mostly."
Hmmm…..age discrimination is a violation under the Canadian Human Rights Act…….! No low that lefties will stoop to it seems!

Jimmy DaSilva
I brought up a Leader’s Series Web cast with Justin Trudeau with the topic “Speak Out Against the Devastating Conservative Cuts to our Cherished Public Broadcaster”, (cherished? now that’s a mouthful). Why wouldn’t the Liberals support them, they are pro Liberal. If P.M. Stephen Harper supports the CBC, why would he cut funds? The CBC does not report news , it gives opinions, and those opinions are very bias, Anti-Conservative opinions. I don’t think the majority of Canadians support the CBC. I think they just don’t care because they don’t watch it! The NDP are promising to give back what P.M. Harper was cutting and the Liberals uped it if they are elected…surprise, surprise!! P.M. Harper wants to put tax payers money to better use. He takes the office of Prime Minister very serious. I would not want any of the other leaders representing us in the International field. He is a true statesman and a gentleman. I wish him every success! And, I love the Rebel!👍
As for not caring how much money Peter and Liza give, why mention it at all?
Have a good evening.🌘

Jimmy watches Pat Condell on Youtube, I am sure Pat would not be to happy about that, if he was aware of it.

Thank You Ezra and all the Rebel crew. You have all been an inspiration. Here is to the future.
commented 2015-10-16 18:59:31 -0400
Sharon,

CBC is Canada’s national television and radio broadcaster for arts, culture, entertainment, information and news. The majority of Canadians support the CBC and want the funding to continue. Harper supports the CBC as well, so your point is moot.

I am not concerned that Peter and Liza want to give The Rebel hundreds or thousands of dollars. I was making the point that since The Rebel can’t acquire any real advertising – because advertising on The Rebel would be bad for their business, Ezra and Brian have realized that they have suckers here that will pay for every whim that they have – so since they can’t really MAKE money through the site, the business plan is now begging for handouts and free stuff, which is incredibly ironic given their position on socialism.
commented 2015-10-16 17:26:29 -0400
Jimmy asked me, "You don’t see the value in holding Ezra and The Rebel accountable and calling them out on bullshit, since people like you lap up whatever they say? "

Sure Jimmy, I do, but that is not what you do. You just insult for the sake of insulting.
commented 2015-10-16 17:12:44 -0400
Hey Sharon, excellent comment. It really points up the difference between the socialist public theft mentality that the left thrives on (’what’s yours is mine, and what’s mine is mine’; the old socialist motto) and the conservative mentality of self-sufficiency and individual responsibility, which the left runs from like the plague. Well done.

My apologies to my fellow conservatives here for referring to the leftist trolls as ‘dissidents’. I must have had an brain infarction as I was writing that, otherwise I can’t explain it. Indeed, they are trolls, but useful ones nonetheless. They do liven up the conversation (as witness below) and their feeble intellectual challenges do keep the grey matter moving, if for no other reason than out of pity for them. This is the great irony: I really think they do unintentionally add something valuable to this site, which is not their comments, but many of the rebuttals their comments generate. I know some of my best comments here have been prompted by theirs. And I have to say, I get a real kick out of some of the responses they generate here. So just keep in mind: They are unintentionally helping the cause of growing and strengthening THEREBEL.MEDIA. Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, eh? So bring it on, trolls, and fellow conservatives, let this site be an example of what freedom of speech means: when all voices are heard, the end result is the best possible result. Not like the leftist philosophy at all, is it?

“So when The Rebel runs out of coffee in the office they will just post a video asking people to send money in so they can buy more coffee and people like Peter and Liza will send in hundreds of dollars so that the rebel remains.”
Hello, Jimmy DaSilva!. Where do you think the money for coffee comes from for the CBC , duh?! They don’t even ask YOU for it , they TAKE it and buy it with every tax payers hard earned money. Why should you be SO concerned if Peter and Liza send hundreds of dollars…it’s THEIR money and not every other tax payers!! Don’t like what you hear or see on The Rebel; don’t watch it! That’s what I do with the CBC! So, I suggest you stick with “whatever floats your boat”.

Look, Terry, you and Jimmy love to point out all of what you perceive as the problems of this website. The two of you do it endlessly day in and day out, but to what end? For what purpose? Why?

What to you hope to accomplish by continually deriding this website?

Terry,

Fantastic post on the reality of The Rebel and advertisers. I am sure Ezra would love nothing more to have well known companies advertising on The Rebel – it would help give some legitimacy to this place, but no well known company in their right mind is going to put their name on The Rebel – they don’t want to be seen as endorsing crazy.

So when The Rebel runs out of coffee in the office, they will just post a video asking people to send in money, so they can buy more coffee and people like Peter and Liza will send in hundreds of dollars, so that The Rebel remains stocked in coffee.

Uh – nope. I’m a man from Ontario. Pleased to meet you.

ALL internet entities feed on click traffic.”
More accurate to say that all internet entities BROWSE on click traffic. It’s a nice little revenue stream to support hobby bloggers. It’s not a livelihood, and it’s definitely nowhere near enough to meet payroll or pay the rent. Like checking the sofa for loose change – it’s always nice, but don’t plan to retire on it.
“Until back sassing the politically correct is normalized….big sponsors will shy away from overtly supporting this cisgendered patriarchal homophobic Islamophobic etc etc etc yaddy-yaddy-yadda site.”
EXACTLY. You just nailed the problem with this site’s business model, and with Sun TV’s model before it. To put it in slightly less florid terms: this site caters to a very specific ideological market of very loyal and very passionate consumers. Their competitive edge, their brand, is a very narrow ideological filter, lots of outrage, lots of humour, and affirmation of values for an angry, aggrieved and politically marginal demographic (roughly corresponding to the Reform wing of the Conservative Party. No significant advertiser in their right mind would associate themselves with Rebel brand – ideology aside, it’s just a bad marketing decision. And the two industries that Ezra lobbies/lobbied for professionally (oil and tobacco) can’t be seen to be directly sponsoring the site; that would remove what flimsy claim the site has to even playing at “journalism”. So they’re stuck with incessant appeals to their loyal but limited audience.

Terry, ALL internet entities feed on click traffic. It is a marketing managers dream…advertising can be targeted like never before. It is why big name sponsors have been abandoning television.

Liza asks, “Amanda lang is a conservative Peter?”

It was my understanding that she presents herself as a Conservative, but by all she has said, she is not a blue conservative.

The CBC has a few people that call themselves Conservatives … very few … but when they open their mouths to voice their opinions, it is obvious that they have liberal ideas and beliefs and just call themselves conservative, so they are still presented by the CBC as the “token” Conservative when interviewed, or in panel discussions. Whenever the CBC needs to trot out a conservative just to make the appearance that they are “balanced” these red conservatives at the CBC are displayed as “See, see, we have a conservative on our panel. We are fair and unbiased!” It’s all a blasted sham. The CBC is a sham. Defund the Communist Broadcasting Corporation and let them survive on their own!
