The Toronto burqa murder: The true story everyone who thinks the niqab is optional needs to read

Rebel Staff

(Special for TheRebel.media by John Goddard) -- When her baby got a heart transplant at Toronto's Sick Children’s Hospital, Bano Shahdady threw away her burqa.

At twenty years old, after years of religious training, she also decided to return to public high school. With help from her son’s doctors and a social worker, she arranged to rent an apartment to leave her parents and husband.

It was there, two weeks after she moved in, that police found her strangled to death, her son left alone with the body for 15 hours, murdered by a man hiding his identity behind a burqa.

On Wednesday, the husband Abdul Malik Rustam was sentenced to life in prison for the murder with no chance of parole for 17 years.

“A woman has an absolute right to end any relationship,” Judge John McMahon of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice told the court. He said that Rustam planned the attack, disguised himself in a burqa to gain access to the apartment, and justified his actions to police. The judge also said that the victim’s father forgave Rustam and pleaded for mercy in court on his behalf, without once mentioning the loss of his daughter.

The facts, as the judge outlined them, pointed to an “honour killing,” a crime distinct from other murders because its motive is to cleanse perceived family dishonour caused by a wife’s or daughter’s behaviour. “Canada’s openness and generosity do not extend to barbaric cultural practices that tolerate… ‘honour killings,’” says the federal Discover Canada guide issued to new immigrants.

But the judge never said the two key words.

“Man gets life sentence for murdering wife,” read the Toronto Star’s headline, relegating the crime to a domestic abuse case.

The Toronto Sun went with, “Man who wore ‘burka’ sentenced in estranged wife’s killing.” Not a single other Canadian news outlet reported the story.

Bano Shahdady deserves better.

Not only did she fight her attacker — by clawing at him and surviving his strangulation attempts for a full 30 minutes — but she also fought the Islamist social ideology that had kept her a vassal in her own home.

This is the story nobody else will tell.

Eleven days after Bano’s death in July 2011, a relative and a family friend, both of them men, spent two hours telling it to me. Both asked that their names not be used, saying that they could not officially speak for the family. Further information comes from an “agreed statement of facts” that Judge McMahon read aloud at the sentencing.

When she was 18 months old, Bano came to Toronto from Pakistan with her parents, the relative said. They settled in Scarborough, where her father joined the Islamist movement Tabligi Jamaat, meaning “Proselytizing Group.” He took a religious title, calling himself Mullah Abdul Ghafoor.

“She was very bright,” the relative said of Bano. “I remember her reading a thick Harry Potter book. She said, ‘Go to any page and read the first two sentences and I will tell you the rest.’ I thought she was bluffing. I went to page 20 and read the first two lines, and she told me the rest.”

When Bano was 13 or 14, her father pulled her out of her Canadian school and enrolled her in a Muslim religious school in Karachi, Pakistan. When she turned 17, he arranged for her to marry her first cousin, an illiterate tailor, who was 25. Almost right away, Bano got pregnant and quit school. She returned to Canada to have the baby at a Canadian hospital.

“When she came back she was completely indoctrinated and completely covered,” the relative said. “You could not see her face. She wasn’t allowed to talk.”

In August 2009 Bano’s son was born with a heart defect and a few months later underwent a transplant.

“It was very emotional,” the relative recalled. “We were all waiting in the waiting room when the doctor said the heart was coming. The government sent a plane to Arizona, got the heart, returned to Pearson, and a helicopter was bringing it to Sick Kids’.

“I was crying,” he said. “Here was a Muslim family that believed that Muslims are supreme, and everybody else will go to hell because they are not Muslim, and some Christians in Arizona are giving them their child’s heart.

“They phoned to see if everything was all right,” he said. “In the Muslim world, nobody gives a heart to anybody.”

After the operation, Bano visibly changed.

“She opened up,” the relative said. “She threw away her burqa. For a while she wore the hijab, then she threw away the hijab. She joined Facebook and organized a website called Balouch Entertainment. She was openly showing her reaction against the mullahs and fanaticism.”

In March 2011 husband Abdul Malik Rustam arrived in Canada as a landed immigrant and saw his son for the first time. He moved in with Bano and the boy in Bano’s parents’ basement. By then, the relative said, Bano wanted to move out.

“She said she wanted a divorce,” Judge McMahon said picking up the story.

Bano went on social assistance and on July 1, 2011, rented an apartment on Eglinton Avenue East. After fixing it up, she moved in.

Two weeks later, on July 22, shortly after 1 a.m., Rustam arrived at her building “planning to cause her harm,” the judge said. “Security video showed him dressed in a full burqa, only his eyes showing, and wearing female white wedge shoes.”

Rustam got off at the sixth floor. Still wearing the burqa, he tilted up the security camera pointing at his estranged wife’s door and knocked. Bano let him in. Within minutes the downstairs neighbour, who was awake texting, heard furniture scraping the floor and muffled screams, as though the screamer had a hand over the mouth. After 30 minutes the noises stopped.

The autopsy showed cuts and bruises around the face, neck, clavicle and upper back. Whether Rustam strangled her with a scarf, or a soft belt, or while wearing gloves, or with his bare hands could not determined. He left the body on the bathroom floor and his two-year-old son screaming in the living room. The strangulation had taken place in front of him. On his way out Rustam broke a heel and had to carry the shoes, still wearing the burqa. “He did not panic,” the judge said.

Rustam went home to his in-laws’ basement. At 4:30 a.m. he got up with his father-in-law to attend morning prayers at the mosque, then went to work. When somebody asked why his face was badly scratched, he said he got into a fight with “some black guy.”

Later that day, when his brother asked about the scratches, Rustam replied, “I finished her by the throat.” The brother understood. At about 5 p.m., more than 15 hours after the murder, the in-laws rescued the boy and Rustam went to the police at 43 Division.

“He said he killed his wife and had justification for his actions,” the judge said without elaborating. Police charged Rustam with first-degree murder. Ten days before the trial, the judge accepted a guilty plea to second-degree murder of the young woman who once delighted in Harry Potter stories.

Well, now, if anyone harbored any doubts as to the seriousness of this ‘religion’ and the affects it has on the mind, best read this story a couple of times. Let’s forget the ‘political correctness’ and look at reality. If the ‘Dawson College’ group who make and issue of the deaths of those unfortunate girls really cared, where are they on this one? Oh, sorry, I forgot, this one wasn’t the fault of a gun — silly me.y

The true Muslim world as opposed to the one put forth by the Canadian left wing governments. In Pakistan, the husband would be a hero. Remember, everything Hitler did was legal….in Germany. The fact the CBC does not carry this is part of their left wing mandate. The CBC needs to be sold into the private sector.

The child should be put up for adoption

He is a landed immigrant in Canada , his immigration status should be canceled. It is going to cost Canadians at least 2,250,000.00 to keep in jail. When and if he is released he should be put on the next plane to Pakistan. He is not a Canadian citizen so he is not entitled to any benefits like welfare or health care or old aged pension. When his time is up kick him out of Canada.
BUT By the time 17 years past he might be prime minister

Huh. 17 years was the best the judge could do for premeditated murder?

I wonder who is raising Bano Shahdady’s son?

Of all the truly dreadful aspects to this story, two that strike me as especially horrible are how she lived and died alone, and how her story was glossed over in the MSM.

That her own father could stand in the courtroom begging for mercy for her murderer, without ever mentioning the life or loss of his own daughter, speaks volumes.

That the news media, by and large, ignored the culture she came from, that she chose to leave knowing the terrible risk she was taking, and that tracked her down and brutally murdered her, is unconscionable.

‘Honour’ murders and the doctrine of murdering apostates, along with many other related, extremist doctrines, should have no place in Canada.

By ignoring those aspects of Bano Shahdady’s story the news media is giving comfort to those who hold those views and even lending a degree of legitimacy to those backward ideas that should never be allowed in a free Canada.

Ms Shahdady sought freedom for herself and her son, but found only a frightful, terrifying, lonely death, largely ignored by the culture of the land in which she hoped to build her life.

BZ – I agree. The fact this wasn’t covered in the mainstream media is revolting and unconscionable. Our ignoring of such situations will come to bite us for sure!!

So much for hearing about this honour killing in the media

Canadians are cowards and some day this will come back to haunt them

And not only do we keep bringing more in – we bow to their whims
We even go as far as to change how we eat – No bacon in some fast food places

We even support terror by paying Halal fees at grocery stores – this money is tacked on to the price of popular foods and the money goes to islamic groups

Most Canadians do not even know this happens

We are so screwed

This is the type of things Muslims do that make them very frightening amongst us. If we allowed Sharia Law, this is what life would be for all women eventually. We can’t let this happen in Canada. As for her family’s acceptance of what her husband did, I believe they too should be tried for being part of the murder. Disgusting behaviour. Animals aren’t even that vicious toward their own.
commented 2015-04-27 01:01:52 -0400
This animal hopefully will get in jail what the judge should have given him…death by strangulation by a woman. Why are we letting these animals into Canada. This is another prime reason why immigration from ALL muslim countries has to stop. They do not respect our society and are only here to take advantage of us, just because we are a generous people should not mean we are a stupid people. Let these animals stay in the hell hole they came from. If Islam is so peaceful there should be no reason to come here…if there you may loose your head by a muslim…but who’s fault is that….certainly no ours.
commented 2015-04-23 10:58:12 -0400
Bano Shahdady by her actions indicated that she was going to leave the religion of Islam. This would have made her an apostate and subject to death under Sharia law. So much for the right of Muslim women to have a divorce. It looks like we will have to get tougher on plea deals for honor murders. Better yet, stop accepting Muslims as immigrants and foreign students.

Wait one minute here! This guy freely said that he planned and carried out this crime! In that essence this states to me, that this is first degree murder. So why the hell did the crown reduce the charge to second degree murder? Was it so they didn’t have to do the work, that they are getting paid to do, to get a quick and easy conviction? Because on the face of it, this sounded like a slam dunk in getting a conviction for first degree murder. I really think the rebel should look into this further. I am sure I’m not alone in thinking that we need answers as to why they reduced the charges. All I can think of is that they didn’t want to do the hard work of convicting someone and to the easy way out, all the while getting paid by our tax dollars. Pathetic in the extreme I say! !!!!

Maurice, “if you study the Qur’an and the Hadiths you come to the inescapable conclusion that it’s these moderates who are actually are the apostates from the Islamic faith, not the blood-thirsty barbarians”… well, you can find pretty nasty stuff in the Hebrew Bible as well.

It’s not what’s in the book, it’s how you interpret it. I think the problem with Islam is that it’s not just a religion (which can’t be critisized because it’s based on belier and so it’s pointless), but rather an expansionist ideology like Communism, which we should be able to criticise freely without fear of retribution from the HRC or alike. Even though I am an immigrant myself, I do support tougher screening measures to keep these barbarians out. Once we define Islam as an ideology, everything falls in place.
commented 2015-04-18 09:34:31 -0400
Immigrants are said to contribute to the fabric of Canada. What do they have that we could possibly want or need?
We need a screening test for applicants and we need to follow the lead of France and simply ban practices and symbols of repression, e.g. burkas. Banned…..period.
commented 2015-04-16 21:16:32 -0400
Deport the SoB. Pakistan can and should have him back. I would like to see legislation passed that imposes a 20 year no-crime term on immigrants, no matter where they’re from. In other words if you commit a murder of any type, against this country or its inhabitants within 20 years of arriving to live here you will be given a fair trial and, if found guilty, you will be stripped of Canadian citizenship, returned to your country of origin and NEVER allowed back. Prospective immigrants should be advised of this law on their application to emigrate to Canada and made to understand the consequences.

This is a truly shocking story. I imagine that Bano, witnessing first hand the power of 21st century medicine administered by women and men working together as professionals, saw through the sham religio-ideology that she had been steeped in and decided she’d had enough. What a lot of courage it must have taken for her to leave the illiterate bag of dirt to whom she’d been married off without regard to her wishes. That he then came sneaking up on her, decked out in a burqa no less, and for 30 minutes assaulted her until she died, is nothing short of chilling in the insight it provides into the minds of these Islam-fueled freaks. I’m no less appalled that he was allowed to plead to 2nd degree murder. Who was the Crown minion who proposed and approved that sweet deal. Everything about this points to premeditation. I guess neither the AG nor the msm wanted to draw attention to his religion or his burqa. How disgusting. I hope that poor child is adopted out to a non-culted family and never sees his dog of a father (who left him to die) again.

Bano deserved better. Maybe husband was transsexual. Otherwise, why the women’s shoes? Seriously. He didn’t need the heels. The burka was enough. And whose shoes were they if not his? Doubtful hers fit him. Maybe that is why he got the light sentence.

Ron, I agree with you that the “Obama accomplishment” of global irrelevance for America was by design. I never meant to imply otherwise. If that wasn’t clear, I apologize. I believe Obama is a highly intelligent man, who knows exactly what he’s doing. However, I also believe he’s motivated entirely by ego and selfish blind ambition. I do not believe he has ever had the best interests of the American people, or western democracies at heart. In fact, in his world view, it’s America and western democracies that are the problem.

In calling the posturing of the liberal elite as “politically-correct blindness” I meant that only in the sense that it’s the face they presently wish to display to the public. In other words, they publicly deny that a problem with Islam even exists. I’m sure they know better. However, their hegemonic aspirations are just as great as Mohammed’s were, all be it confined to their own country. It’s purely a vote-getting ploy, which I hope will backfire. If it doesn’t, and they ever get into power (shudder!), it won’t take long for them to discover the high cost of making a pact with the Devil. I fear that by then it will be too late; for them and everyone else. I sure hope I’ve slipped these mortal coils by then. I wouldn’t want to be around to witness that carnage!

Maurice, indeed, “Obama has accomplished at least one of his goals as President; he’s made America all but irrelevant on the world stage.” However, I would not attribute this outcome to ignorance or incompetence, but rather to design. It may be that Obama, and others like Trudeau and Mulcair, haven’t “grasped” when it comes to Islam, that the enemy of my enemy is still my enemy, which was pointed out by Netanyahu in his recent speech to the U.S. Congress, saying, “So when it comes to Iran and ISIS, the enemy of your enemy is your enemy”. However, I do not necessarily attribute their actions and postures as political-correct “blindness”. Because, from the standpoint of the political-correct or ‘progressive’ or cultural Marxist crowd, another way to look at it, it is a case of a very simple wartime strategic maxim: “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. An informative article on Cultural Marxism:

I would agree, as you say, “with all due respect to the moderate, peace-loving Muslims out there…if you study the Qur’an and the Hadiths you come to the inescapable conclusion that it’s these moderates who are actually the apostates from the Islamic faith, not the blood-thirsty barbarians”. In the words of someone I have followed who is well-versed in the content of the Qur’an, “there is no such thing as a moderate Muslim because there is no such thing as a moderate Qur’an!”

God is Not Great, Delectable Lie and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam all say the same thing – that edicts written last override those written earlier. Thing is, all the bad stuff in the Koran was written last!! It also says that the only excuse they have for not killing the rest of us, is if they’re in the underdog position, as they are here in Canada. If someone is SO devout, that they choose to wear a garb that is NOT required by the religion, don’t you think they’d be so devout as to follow the aforementioned items as well?

I am surprised that more of these burka women aren’t screaming on the roof tops against this oppression. This is not the middle east and we are not under sharia law as most imams and terrorists would love to see. All mosques and imams need to be scrutinized and burned to the ground for teaching treason and hatred towards all Canadians and women. Muslim women need to start blowing the whistle on their prison guards who say they are their brothers, husbands and fathers. This is not love for women in islam, only slavery.

Obama has accomplished at least one of his goals as President; he’s made America all but irrelevant on the world stage. They still hold the balance of military power… for now. But just barely. That won’t last long with China, Russia and the Islamic States building up their military might while the US, under this administration, seems to be determined to divest themselves of it. One thing Obama (Trudeau, Mulcair, et al) haven’t grasped is that, when it comes to Islam, the enemy of my enemy is still my enemy. Carter supported the Taliban against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, that worked out well, didn’t it? Obama supported The Muslim Brotherhood in their overthrow of Mubarak, that worked out well, didn’t it? Obama decided that Libyan dictator, Gaddafi, should be eliminated, that worked out well, didn’t it? Obama decided to support the rebels in their fight against Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, which created the climate which gave birth to ISIS, That sure worked out well, didn’t it? The problem isn’t ISIS, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Libya, the West Bank, Gaza, or any other predominantly Muslim part of the World. The problem is the Satanic cult of Islam itself, founded by a barbaric, blood-thirsty, hegemonic pedophile named Mohammad, along with political-correct liberal blindness. With all due respect to the moderate, peace-loving Muslims out there, who I really respect and appreciate, if you study the Qur’an and the Hadiths you come to the inescapable conclusion that it’s these moderates who are actually are the apostates from the Islamic faith, not the blood-thirsty barbarians.

To say man created God not vice versa is pure vanity. Science hasn’t discovered any planets equal to earth yet you can believe someone could travel thousands of light years to come to earth but you can’t believe a supernatural being could come from another dimension. Ancient aliens or Angels and Demons. It’s all available for you to discover

I agree true north. Islam is a cult. maybe not by definition but by the fact that it is a way of life. I compare mohamed to Alister Crowley. Once described as the wickedest man on earth by his own mother. Since you have sought the truth consider this. Islam is not derived from any testatament/Abraham since he was obedient but by the fact that we (the ones entrusted to uphold Gods laws) murdered him thereby martyring him. This set in action a series of events that have reached apolyptic proportion. This strife is not caused by religion but rather a lack of it. I ask what religion does communist China or Russia practice? This is caused by blundered political policy. Atheism is an oxy-moron, since it is defined as someone who has no knowledge of God. Agnostic is someone indifferent to God. A Pygmy tribe from Borneo would be atheist if you describe yourself as such I think you’re stupidity is something normally reserved for the institionalized. The truth is available, I only discovered it a few years ago it wasn’t indoctrinated or coerced on me. Once you discover it all the lies and deception will fade away. If we could return to them what we have taken, there would be no conflict
