Students lead the fight to put “Western Civ” BACK in college classrooms

Tiffany GabbayRebel Host

There has been a concerted effort by the Left to purge “Western Civilization” curricula from our institutions of higher learning and sadly, it's been successful.

Back in the 1980s, with a battle cry of "Hey, hey, ho, ho, Western culture's got to go," Jesse Jackson led Stanford University students who were protesting the school's longstanding Western Civilization core requirement, arguing that these courses were "racist."

To the Left, the greats like Shakespeare, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Locke and countless others are nothing more than "dead white males" who exemplify colonialism, classism, and white supremacy.

So now, "Western Civ" requirements have been replaced with "diversity courses." In fact, today you can earn a degree without ever having read a single work of Greek, Enlightenment or other Western philosophy.

One look at the Social Justice Warriors on college campuses perfectly illustrates the consequences of this mis-education.

If you think the West's obsession with multiculturalism is bad now, just wait until this next generation of students comes up in the world. They will, after all, be our future leaders.

And that is a very scary thought.

Thankfully, there are some very bright students out there pushing for the reinstatement of "Western Civ" as a core requirement. Tonight, we'll talk with one those students: Elliot Kaufman, student and news editor of "The Stanford Review."

We'll also chat with Dr. Herb London, President of the London Center for Policy Research, and professor emeritus and the former John M. Olin Professor of Humanities at NYU. He witnessed the dismantling of "Western Civ" in colleges and universities at the very beginning and joins us to explain where things stand today.

University forces its students to take things that were already taught enough times in grade school. Many universities force students to take english and mathematics, as well as at least one course that is a humanity and a natural science.

You know there is something wrong when a major only comprises of one third of a bachelor degree’s courses.

Why should Western civ be a degree requirement? Shouldn’t they have already covered the basics in high school?

Also, almost the entirety of my degree in political science was basically studies in “Western civ”. There is no shortage of Western civ content, but I do not think it should be a required course. Not at the university level.

The irony they are living the ideals and benefit of western culture ; if they lived in the east today they would be suppressed and thrown in jail. These kids are idiots hoping trump wins. Hello you progressives most of these great thinkers were gay . Fab gay man for the west and trump.

Great show, Tiffany. I thoroughly enjoy your comments and your guests. The theme of “Culture Wars” really is such an important topic. I have children in academia, and am a teacher myself, so when you involve university students and professors I become doubly focused. Your show is a wonderful addition to the Rebel lineup. I wish it were on more often.

Those feminists you speak of are worse than you describe them to be. They believe every white straight able bodied man is guilty of some kind of oppression. If he does not actively oppress minorities, then he is oppressing them subconsciously. Now throw in all the other barriers that are of the systemic and holistic nature, and you have a patriarchy that gets rich by marginalizing minorities. So the answer is simple. Tear down the existing system, take away the wealth and belongings of the successful, and create a new society that is based on the principles of modern day leftist ideology. Now add in a de-colonization tax, and return the land back to the aboriginals so that they can become our landlords.

Media are largely responsible for empowering toxic third-wave feminists. (I use the term feminist loosely, because modern feminists have virtually nothing in common with earlier feminist, who actually fought for women’s rights.) Essentially this modern group believes men (more specifically white men) are responsible for every evil in the world. By the same token, these misandrists say men contribute nothing to society. This is a ridiculous notion, presented without credible evidence, regurgitated mindlessly by media, and accepted by our schools as fact. Every time these people use the term ‘white male privilege’ they should be attacked for being what they are: racist, sexist, misandrists. If any male used the same bigotted vocabulary he would be castigated, on the spot, by everyone – man and woman alike.

So your best argument is that the course was worth it because you butted heads? I took western civilization too in grade 12. For the most part, I enjoyed the course and the teacher. But since there was no resistance on my part, does that mean that I did not receive an education, and only an indoctrination?

Just because I liked the course, does not mean that it should be made mandatory at a university level. In university, I took some western civilization courses because I needed to boost my GPA. Now that I am out of university, I find that western civilization has done absolutely nothing for me in terms of obtaining employment. Sure there was an interesting thing here and there in the course, but that does not justify making it mandatory. And besides, if I want to learn more about western civilization right now, then I always have the option of looking it up on my own. I don’t need the university to force feed it to me.

The western civilization profs that want to make it mandatory are saying it so that there are more teaching jobs opened up in university. Because god knows, that you can’t do anything with a western civilization education except for teaching it.

I took Western Civ. as an elective back in grade twelve (1990-ish), as a compliment to my self-pursued studies into indigenous Germanic belief and history. Needless to say perhaps, as someone who’s interest in native Germanicism was and is religious, and as someone who went as close to the source as possible, meaning the writings of Catholic scribes and historians, I was less than impressed Western culture. I mean, who is going to have a glowing attitude toward a group that consistently refers to one’s own ancestors, often their own ancestors, as dirty, unwashed, soulless, lawless, and with a general and utter contempt. You know, like modern SJWs refer to our more immediate ancestors. And as more than one of my classmates, but never the males, and certainly not directly to my face, referred to me.

Nevertheless, I elected to take the course. And I have to admit that it provided probably my fondest memory of my high school days; and precisely because of the initial friction that existed between the teacher and myself. Needless to say perhaps, we both, the teacher and I, walked away from that semester with a new found respect for each other and our (shared) ethno-cultural background.

Friction, resistance, adversity … these things build character and induce growth; be it growth of the body or growth of the mind. There is no real education without resistance. There is only indoctrination.

Why on earth should I cherish being force fed useless crap? Think of the better things I could have learned in the place of Shakespeare.

TIFFNAY , I find your delivery effective, you talk with a soothing tone of matter of -factness, your inflection is in your points and statements, and the passion in the eyes

When are you silly parents going to shop around for more wholesome university’s
Personally I think our universities are soon to be shutting down As I see the west shutting down , that’s what happens to everything when to start to pervert it
The dumbing down of the west - perverting the west

Not a big fan of the blue-collar types eh Joe? People like you are part of the problem and you don’t even know it.

Tiffany’s opening and closing remarks are right on. Also the remark by Dr London that “if they don’t understand western civilization, they can’t defend it”. It is Western Civilization alone which allows these people to say what they say. There are few freedoms elsewhere.

People like “Anonymous” should cherish their education if it included the wider understanding of the world. In my school years, I hated mathematics (compulsory in all schools) and wished I could by-pass it. Then I came to see that math opened up the field of engineering to me. I hated empire history (compulsory) and wanted to drop out of it. Then I saw the beauty and diversity of the world. I hated the doldrums of reading and composition (compulsory subjects). Then I saw the wonderful world of literature. I hated the compulsory subjects of geometry and algebra and physics (I failed them in high school). Then I realized I could understand the shapes and formulas and energy systems of our universe. I hated other language courses (compulsory to have at least one). Then I saw the opportunity to learn other languages which further opened up our world. I know farmers, fishermen, mechanics, carpenters, laborers and trades people who can barely read or write. Yet they also have no enjoyment of the world at large, carry a lot of biases, and cannot expand their horizons.

Education in western civilization taught us how to learn more. I could go on and on about the ‘colonialism’ of the West , which was mild compared to the slavery of the East. No wonder we now live in a dumbed down world.

I can understand the moniker Anonymous. Who would want to put their name beside such poorly-written dribble?

I always recommended to my engineering friends that they study Art History 226: Renaissance to Modern: a brilliant survey course which offers a great introduction to Western Civilisation. When they asked me what could possibly be practical about it, I smiled and answered, “There are over one-hundred students in that class, and only three of them are men.” You decide.

Something out in cyber space blerps out this: “I had to read Shakespeare. Merchant of Venice, Henry, Macbeth, and Hamlet. None of it helped me”

This is living testament to the dumbing down of society and making the soul-sucking prospect of cultural ignorance as social asset.

FYI quisling, the classic western communicators and philosophers will help you understand the human condition and make sense of your place and roll in it, it gives you a sense of empathy with life, nature and mankind – something science, engineering, math and economics can’t do.

But then, I am one of those people that is dead set against any sort of indoctrination from any source whatsoever and I firmly believe in presenting the facts only to each person to make their own judgement value upon it. But it cannot be judged by the individual unless it is presented, hence making it a mandatory course in high school.
commented 2016-05-04 11:06:03 -0400
I disagree with Anonymous.

Every child in Western society should be required to learn about how Western society was built.

In fact, I think it should be a mandatory course in senior high school so that all students are exposed to the material, not just those in college or university.

And that material should be written and maintained by the federal government of each country to include only the facts of history with no judgement values added to the course, i.e. a basic history of Western culture, the good, the bad and the ugly all in all its’ raw beauty and raw ugliness. Let the students decide for themselves what to take from the material.

The only way this is possible will in private universities. Public education is all about indoctrination into the Cult of Progressivism.

If the Cultural War turns into a shooting war, I’m all for it.

Anonymous …In that case, you should have stayed home instead of getting an education since nothing you learned seems to have been a benefit to you. Since you also seem to have a hate-on for Western civilization, you should go live in a third world country where you can be at home.
commented 2016-05-04 06:02:25 -0400
Yes Anonymous, western civilization is just the worst civilization in the world, except when compared to all the others.

This has got to be the worst rebel show I have watched so far. This episode is a complete waste of time, just like western civilization classes are.

Why should university students be forced to take mandatory classes in western civ? Western civ is completely useless at helping graduates find employment. What are graduates going to do with the useless knowledge they were force fed to learn in their western civ classes? Well, besides be an arrogant prick like the guy you interviewed.

I had to read Shakespeare. Merchant of Venice, Henry, Macbeth, and Hamlet. None of it helped me with employment or anything else in adult life. It was a complete waste of time. And what happens if somebody does not know Beethoven? Who gives a damn if somebody can not recognize Fure Elise or Ode to Joy?

Having to take electives in university is bad enough. Making western civ a mandatory elective is even worse. People that are in engineering, computer science, or geology are not going to care. They were not planning on going to university to learn stupid liberal arts.

When it comes to forced mandatory courses, students hate them with a passion. They don’t remember anything by the time they graduate. Well, assuming they graduate. Force feeding students garbage classes makes students want to drop out. I hear from students that go to community college that they like their education because there is no forced stupid mandatory elective courses.

And the whole Judeo Christian ethics can kiss my ass. Religion is only there to control people.

While western society has been lucky enough to be prosperous, but none of that is going to change depending on how much useless western civ courses people take. And yes, I took western civ. I needed to fill in an elective, and I wanted something that was going to give me a good mark. So if you want to have a good point, go with the argument that courses like western civ are easy and will boost a students’ GPA.

I will not be paying for a subscription to watch your show.

Tiffany, you say: “the West has singularly moved the entire human species forward." But isn’t the modern industrial Western civilization actually moving the human species backwards?

Western fertility rates have been falling for decades and now all of the Western peoples are headed to a future of catastrophic depopulation. Isn’t this the very reason governments are supplanting the indigenous peoples of Europe with Muslim immigrants in order to keep “their economies” (profits of the oligarchs) growing?
How can we say with a straight face that our “Western culture and values” are superior while we are proving that they are antithetical towards life itself?

There seems to me very little point in defending a civilization incapable of sustaining itself for much more than a few more decades unless we also discuss solutions to our own society’s autogenocidal path to oblivion.

The demographic shift that is underway in Europe means that Western values and civilization are on their way out and Shariah is on its way in. Ironically, one could imagine a future in which mass conversion to Islam by the few remaining indigenous peoples of Europe (whether voluntarily or otherwise) may finally be the only thing which saves them from the completion of their own “culturally superior” self-annihilation.

If we (and that means “all” of us) have any real pride in our civilization then we must first recognize our greatest existential threat – Our reproductive system is broken!

I find Tiffany easy to listen to because she presents her subject matter without unnecessary drama. Hers is the one programme I eagerly anticipate and I find myself counting down the days until the next episode. Sorry to disagree with you, Egil, but I’m a fan of Tiffany’s style of delivery.

Tiffany, on the good side, your outfit rocks. There should be a section on the site where people may explore your and other commentator’s out fit suppliers. Maybe there can be some sponsorship money in it?
On the negative, you are a professional commentator and really need to improve our delivery. You might need a speech coach if you can’t get some inflection and passion into your delivery on your own.

I like the subject of your comments and the though which has gone into them.

As was stated by a theologian/scholar/historian: University students are educated beyond their level of intelligence.
In this case, they are not even educated.
At least they will learn how to garden!!
