Tim Tebow and "Team Conservative": The top 10 athletes who play for the right-of-centre side

Rebel Staff

The Philadelphia Eagles appear set to sign free agent Tim Tebow. Can Tebow-mania and the city of brotherly love co-exist?

Head Coach Chip Kelly hopes so. Tebow, a master at the spread offense, has a chance to make the 53-man roster and will get an opportunity to prove he can succeed in the NFL during training camp later this summer.

Tebow, not shy of demonstrating his faith publicly, has also supported many right-wing policies like being pro-life.

Tebow is not alone on team "right wing." Let's take a look at a top 10 list of athletes who support the right of centre cause:

10.  Tim Tebow

Probably the most persecuted athlete ever because of his faith, he’s been perceived to be blacklisted by the NFL for much of his post-college career. He appeared in a pro-life Super Bowl commercial for Focus on the Family which got axed by the NFL before game time.

9.  Kristi Yamaguchi

The 1992 Olympic Champion in ladies’ singles starred in a pro-Mitt Romney super PAC Restore Our Future.

8.  Nolan Ryan

An ace on the mound and ardent Republican off of it. In the 90s, Ryan was frequently mentioned as a potential right wing candidate either at a State or Federal level, but never ran in any race. He has appeared in ads for the NRA.

7.  Richard Petty

One of NASCAR’s most successful stars, Petty is proud to be politically conservative and has stumped at many political rallies.

6.  Pete Sampras

Retired tennis great Sampras came down hard on Tina Fey for her portrayal of Sarah Palin in the 2008 US Presidential election. He was a vocal supporter for Sen. John McCain.

5.  Bobby Orr

A supporter of conservative politics whether in Canada or US, Orr has donated to campaigns on both sides of the border.

4.  Peyton Manning

Has donated to campaigns of many right wing politicians including George W. Bush, Fred Thompson and Senator Lamar Alexander. Manning might even make the switch from a Super Bowl run to a presidential run one day.

3.  Jack Kemp

Served in the House for 12 years as a Rep. from New York after 12 years of professional football. Kemp was part of the GOP ticket with Bob Dole in 1996, losing to President Bill Clinton.

2.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

The one time Calgary Stampeder and pro-wrestler, The Rock, has been an outspoken supporter of the Republican Party, even speaking at the GOP National Convention in 2000.

1.  Don Cherry

The controversial Hockey Night in Canada co-host has supported many conservative politicians here in Canada.  Whether supporting Rob Ford running for Mayor or Julian Fantino running for MP, Don Cherry is a political force in Canada and was even a big fan of Byline with Brian Lilley on the Sun News Network.
