Today in History: Act of Union between England and Scotland gets Royal Assent (1707)

John RobsonResident Historian

On this day in history, just over three centuries ago, on March 24, 1707, Queen Anne gave Royal Assent to the Act of Union between England and Scotland.

There was great popular lack of enthusiasm at the time, but Great Britain lived up to its name economically, culturally and even militarily. Both the Scots and the English did very well out of it and almost none of their fears were realized.

So it’s sad to see it crumbling today amid general indifference.

The British no longer believe they are great or want to be … and the resulting malaise threatens the union itself.
