Today in History: England signs Treaty of Westminster with Spain against France (1511)

John RobsonResident Historian

On November 17 of 1511, Catholic King Henry VIII of England signed the Treaty of Westminster with Catholic Spain against Catholic France.

Later British foreign policy was preoccupied with defeating Catholic autocracies like France, and Spain.

But if Henry had not broken with Rome, very little would have been different in subsequent centuries.

Another thoughtful vingnette of history by Prof. Robson. I do look forward to these.

I agree that Henry was not willingly instumental in the reformation – he was a base individual and tyrant who followed wherever his wandering codpiece led him – religion and its institutions were merely instruments of control to him. His break with the intervention of the Rome-centered theocracy was self-interest and dominance inspired. He simply wanted to control his own pontiff to bless his profigacy and policies – he felt 2 could play the puppet divinity game.

The break with Rome freed the British church to purge itself of quasi-pagan ritual ( such as the eucharist and Pharaonic trappings) of the Roman church and pursue true spirituality and self-enlightenment which led to the reformation church which lead to the liberal enlightenment and ultimately representative democracy and parliamentary rule.

If Henry had known his act accelerated the end of the age of kings/tyrants, I still don’t think it would have bothered him because he was so base all that mattered was gratification of his immediate needs and to hell with cultural evolution or his legacy.

Is this not the LESSON from History ? There was NO lesson from Viet Nam.

There was NO lesson from Korea.
There is NO Lesson from the Mid East.
