Today in History: Establishment of the (dubious) French Legion d’Honneur (1802)

John RobsonResident Historian

May 19 is the anniversary of the establishment of the French Legion d’Honneur. By Napoleon, the famous… um… dictator and failed aggressor.

Thus for all the worthiness of many recipients, the Legion d’Honneur underlines the tragic difficulty in nations, and cultures, without the Anglosphere’s tradition of openness and individual rights, in finding aspects of their heritage to celebrate and around which to rally in the name of preserving and advancing freedom and dignity.
