Today in History: Soviets crush the Prague Spring (1968)

John RobsonResident Historian

On August 20 1968 flower power met tank tread when the Soviet Union crushed the Prague Spring.

It was a salutary shock in the middle of the most radical agitation of “the Sixties”, reminding those willing to see that for all its faults, Western society was open to protest and respectful of non-violent dissent in the way that other political cultures were not, including our most deadly enemy at the time.

@wayne Allen. As far as I know, Nelson Mandela was never a member of any Communist Party although the ANC and the SACP (South African Communist Party) worked together so closely for so long that it is, perhaps, a distinction without a difference. As for Joe Slovo, he died in 1995 so he is definitely NOT still running anything in South Africa.

The victims of communism are still increasing. The latest are the over 300,000 and counting white farmers in South Africa since the end of apartheid. Nelson Mandela was a member of the Communist Party. Another communist Joe Slovo is still running the place.

If anyone wants a good read about corrupted communist application, I recommend The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson. It’s about North Korea under Kim Sung Il and Kim Jong Il. Or however we say those names.

I felt dirty all over after reading it. Such an ugly tyranny.

Rick, so true. Canada’s wealthiest families/individuals are NDP.

But many on the left are true believers. They have read the Marx for Dummies series without studying the facts of history.

Marxist ideology is really quite elegant. In practice, though, it becomes a deadly tyranny.

“Eventually you had Richard Nixon hounded out of office. Proof that the system really does work.”
Well, I don’t think it works anymore… We literally have a CRIMINAL running for President in the United States. HRC makes Richard Nixon look like a choir boy. Her entire career of public service has been marred by one scandal after another and, if she gets out of this current one without at least a heavy fine if not jail time, our system has collapsed.

Your own words condemn you, if you choose to abstain from voting. Read my comment under Brian Lilly’s story “In election 2015, the choices are stark, not shades of grey”.

VLAD JOHNSON said: “60M dead Chinese because of Mao. 30M dead Russians because of Stalin. Makes you wonder why the left is so determined.” The left is determined because certain elements stand to become very wealthy and influential should they succeed. We saw this with the former Soviet Union which coincidentally, had more millionaires per capita than the U.S.!

@charles White. I’ve always felt badly about all those people who we let languish in Communist hell-holes rather than helping them. I’m not just talking about the Czechs in 1968 or the Hungarians in 1956 but about all the freedom-loving citizens of all of the countries under Communist control, including the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, and all the rest. Every one of those countries and the vast vast majority of its citizens were enslaved. They did NOT freely elect their governments and they were NOT free to leave if they didn’t like it there. The Soviets alone had a special force of 50,000 quasi-military KGB agents assigned to keep Soviet citizens within their borders. We in the West made a few half-hearted efforts like the interventions to help the “Whites” against the Reds in the Soviet Civil War that followed Lenin’s seizure of power and the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba but, mostly, we established “spheres of influence” and let the Communists do what they liked on their side of those lines. People in those countries endured those regimes for decades in many cases; some of those countries are still not free, particularly China and Cuba. Tens of millions of people died prematurely because we would not confront the evil that ruled those countries. We will have to carry that failure for as long as people study history.

Would more people have died if we had confronted the Communists? I don’t know. But it continues to trouble me whenever we endure evil rather than confront it. That’s why I can’t support anyone but Harper in this election. Trudeau has shown that he is far too soft on terrorists and I don’t trust Mulcair as far as I can throw him: he’s a Fellow Traveller, just like Trudeau.

I remember it well. It was one of the very few times in my life I heard my Mom swear. She called the USSR dirty bastards.

It`s been the tenet of repressive regimes throughout history. The Russian regime in 1959 1960 could not believe that the United States did not invade Cuba. With the United States lack of action it encouraged the Russians to land nuclear missiles in Cuba which brought the world to the edge of nuclear war and enslaved the Cuban people. When in 1956 the people of Hungary wanted charge the Russian Soviets rolled in the tanks and crushed the Hungarian revolution. Through out history repressive regimes like ISIS have come and gone they may last a few generations but in the end they parish only to rise again and fall. It is human history that we must suffer these repressive regimes.
When you loose free speech and the discourse of ideas you loose the battle for freedom. SO

When working housing construction in Calgary during the early 70’s I had the pleasure of a co-worker who had been a mid-level official in the Dubcek regime and was now a refugee. His take was that they had overly trusted the Democratic administration in The States and their alleged promise of support; sort of like the current Democrats with the Ukraine. He was also a refugee who did not expect Canada to bend to him but, instead, embraced Canada…he really loved the Stampede.
