In today's Globe and Mail, Lawrence Martin writes about a conversation he had with "a top strategist" for the Liberal Party:
"In the Greater Toronto Area, where the election may well be decided, a top strategist told me that the biggest drag on their numbers is not their own doing. It’s the Ontario Liberal government’s early age sexual education policy. “I’m not kidding. It’s hurting the brand badly in certain ethnic communities, especially in the west 905.”
"There are, of course, many more problems than that," Lawrence adds.
He complains that the Conservatives "dominate the airwaves," putting "Justin Trudeau on the defensive." The Liberals, he writes, "lack a phrase-maker" and "clarity."
However, the protests against Liberal premier Kathleen Wynne's controversial sex-education curriculum point to a larger problem for the party.
They could be an outward sign that Liberals are losing their traditional grip on "ethnic communities."
The party that has championed "diversity" and "multiculturalism" for generations may want to ask itself where it went wrong.
