Volkswagen scandal is no reason to kill off cars

David MenziesMission Specialist

Volkswagen is experiencing the biggest scandal in its 78 year history after the company acknowledged installing  software in diesel engines designed to hide the emissions of toxic gases.

Even worse, they were warned about the problem several years ago and chose not to do anything about it.

Emissions-gate has become VW's Ford Pinto moment and without a doubt, if they could walk it back they would make a different decision.

What's amusing though is the pile-on effect by those on the left who will no doubt be clamouring for the demise of cars altogether as a result of this.

I explain why going back to the age before the automobile would be even worse for the environment and provide the information you will need to fend off the green police.

Most people probably buy these vehicles for their fuel efficiency/mileage and could care less about a few NOX here or there on an overregulated California CARB scale.
In this crazy world, VW’s sales will probably increase.

“Diesel fuel is the main fuel used for transporting goods across the United States. Diesel fuel is heavier and oilier than gasoline and when it was first used in cars during the oil crisis of the 1970s, people found their cars covered in soot. Indeed, diesel engines can emit a fair amount of nitrogen compounds and particulate matter as they burn diesel fuel. These facts combined to give diesel fuel a bad environmental name, even though it in fact emits lower amounts of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide than does gasoline.”

Mark I have read analysis comparing clean diesel to gas and they are almost. Comical. One claims Giselle produces 13% more co2.. Unless you believe GW co2 isn’t a pollutant. Also argues it takes more crude to produce a gallon of disel. Who cares if you go almost twice as far on a gallon of disel. I get 1200 Kim’s on a tank, that’s 60 miles per gallon. We had a gas Jetta for a week and it used twice as much fuel as our disel.

Mark I’m very aware of the point. Fact Diesels are cleaner than gas including the fact that you can go twice as far as on the same guantity of fuel as gas. When I get my 06 tested the testers say they can’t understand why diesels are tested.
The new. Diesels are so clean you can breath the exhaust without I’ll effects. Yes the codes were set to cheat California tests which are far tougher than ours. I had a VW mechanic tell me they didn’t need to do that.

I once criticized you. I was wrong. I apologize.
You are a beautiful person.
Can you be cloned? This world needs a great many more Menzoids.

@ Charleton G ,

Diesels are NOT cleaner than gas…
And You MISSED the point ..V.W was caught cheating .. they had a encrypted computer so when you went through emissions tests it would LIE and say it burned clean when infact it polluted 40 times more than a old oil burining/leaking Suburban !

They plug their computer into your cars computer at emissions testing ..VW Diesels are not clean they FAIL all tests ,40 times worse than any other gas powered car ! But VW added a cheat code in the cars computer so it always reads a pass !!!

Very enlightening David. The problem with most people is they are so self absorbed they don’t actually realize that the world existed before THEY were born. If they didn’t experience it, it did not happen. You know…history? The time will come when the gas runs out. I’m glad I won’t be there to live through that.

I love my 2006 Jetta which I leased Jan 19 2007. It saved me 3000+ a year in fuel. I bought it off the least at 2000 less than market. Used TDI s sold at a premium. The leather is like new and I had very little issues with it which I caused. I would buy another in a heart beat. Passes emissions with no problem.

John Nathews that is correct. I bought an 06 in 07 because they weren’t available. I still have that TDI.

Guy Fraser, I seem to remember VW did not sell diesels in 07/08 due to engineering to meet the emission standards.

I ordered in late December, 1977 one of the first VW diesels to be delivered in BC . A nice but quirky car, I put 260.00 km on it before trading up to, you guess it, another VW diesel. Last one was a 2009 diesel, all very fine cars. i would not hesitate to buy another one.

It really is laughable. These theoreticians that think they know what’s best for us have zero clue about the consequences/results of their theories. They want us all back in the days of the horse and buggy. Are THEY willing to do that? Oh, no, that’s just for the peons, not for THEM… I’ve also heard a theory that the earth is an organism, and man is a virus, and that “global warming” is just an organism’s method of killing a virus. But the result of this theory (if correct, which it’s not) is that 90% of mankind would die. Okay. But do they think about what that will mean? Total collapse. Who’s going to man the refineries? Who’s going to ship the fuel? Who’s going to man the power stations? Who’s going to grow the food? “It’ll all work out” is all we get. In other words, they don’t have a clue. And neither do these people who seem to think that, just by breathing, we’re polluting the atmosphere. The unacknowledged hypocrisy is astounding (“Do as I say, not as I do”)…

The leftist elites, the crony capitalist partners, their lackeys and bootlickers will always have government assigned transport suitable to their station. The “little people” will be expected to make the sacrifices involved to achieve victory over the great Climate Change Monster.
That is the system they dream about.

Good one, David!

If this “scandle” shuts down the German auto industry where are all those eager Muslim incoming going to find employment.

My only complaint about diesel, as a former owner/driver, was when they took the sulfur out of the fuel. My mileage dropped by 30%. But at that time diesel was 10c or more per liter cheaper than gas…

In the end those who do not have to pull a disc through the field, or combine a crop or haul hay for the animals – or those who can ride a bike to work – they all have no idea what an engine does for them – so it is easy to talk of NO gas or diesel engines.

I wonder what they will do when the food, medicine or truckable goods all stop flowing?

Wait a minute!

No one thought of that!

VW makes a good vehicle and personally I give a rats ass about the emission tests – it runs well and delivers the load.

And that is all that matters

In2007 VW didn’t make a diesel. I don’t know how you could warn them about something that didn’t exist.
Diesels are cleaner than gas. I have a 2006 TDI Jetta and it is amazing. Had it since new.

Good point but try convincing media and environmentalists

But… but… didn’t VW do just what the lefties wanted? They had “proof” that their vehicles were low emission! These vehicles were tested, and the tests showed the result!

…which is exactly how political correctness and party line works. Hell, they did this in the Soviet Union for decades — show the proof on paper, so that everybody’s happy. The fact that reality shows something entirely different doesn’t mean anything. So why is everybody upset? VW’s just been living up to political correctness standard. We’ve had this same type of result with global warming (sorry, “climate change”) for decades. What’s all the fuss?

Oh, you mean the lefties don’t like it when reality smacks them in the face? Well, who’da thought…
