Last week George Deek, an Arab-Christian Israeli diplomat, was scheduled to speak about the “need for mutual respect” regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at UC Davis.
Instead of debating Deek, campus protesters from the Students for Justice in Palestine attempted to disrupt the event, yelling “long live the Intifada” and “Allahu akbar”.
According to the Israel on Campus Coalition, protesters "refused to engage with George" who wanted to pursue "dialogue, and understanding." It appeared they were more interested in shutting the event down.
This level of hate-filled, conversation-ending protest has become far too commonplace on college campuses today. Instead of engaging and respectfully disagreeing, students accuse speakers of all manner of buzzwords while simultaneously refusing to hear what the speakers have to say.
University should be a place to open minds and engage in discourse, unfortunately modern education is continually drifting further away from that goal.
