Language police ban “Hey Guys”: Experts “grasp” for more inclusive greeting

David MenziesMission Specialist

Apparently using the word “guys” is no longer inclusive enough in the polite society of 2018.

The latest trite first-world problem to receive feature treatment in The Atlantic magazine is the improper usage of “guys.”

In an article entitled, “The Problem With ‘Hey Guys’” we’re told:

“A broad coalition of English speakers – teachers, retail workers, ice-cream scoopers, and plenty of others – is grasping for a more inclusive greeting.”

In this day and age of innumerable genders, “guys” is apparently not inclusive or “diverse” enough.

But don’t worry. The Atlantic, with the help of a debate coach and other “experts”, does have some alternatives for us, although I like my suggestion better … with a caveat.

Actually, Mennzoid, I’m going to give the SJW nutjobs a pass on this one without ridiculing them (any more than you already have). I consider myself severely normal, but I always, especially in the workplace, felt a mild tinge of discomfort addressing a group that included women as “you guys”, so I generally go with “hey folks” or something like that.

Of course, that was way back in my unenlightened days when I firmly believed there were only two genders, men and women. Like yesterday. And tomorrow.

As Baby Doc Trudeau would say, “Uhhhhhhhh?”

The Atlantic Magazine is still around! Just like The New Yorker, it is about as relevant as last year’s headlines.
