“If you’re already stretching to pay your bills, you can’t afford children”

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

[NOTE: Jerry Agar is guest hosting while Ezra Levant is on assignment in Israel.] Campaign 2000 is a national coalition committed to ending child poverty across the country.

They say it is time Ottawa got official estimates about how much it costs to raise a child, to guide public policy and help parents with planning.

But I am now going to say something that will make some people angry:

If you are already stretching to pay your bills, you cannot afford children. Do not have them if you are going to need other people to pay for them.

Those other people have their own children to pay for and they already pay enough tax in this country.

Children are not a right.

They are a responsibility.

The people who try to wipe out poverty with other people’s money are, and always have been, on the wrong track.

That is good news Space Moose.

Mark Chadwick, spot on. In a few short years all those selfish, entitled kids, too self absorbed to have children of their own, are going to look around and wonder what happened to their country. I know a few of them who are going to ask ,‘why didn’t you guys tell us this was going to happen’. I have tried, they don’t want to bloody well hear it.

Muslims will out breed us in no time and that will happen even if we were to close the borders to any more, today. I can only hope some of them will want to leave and return to where they came from. It makes me heart sick to think of Canadians being out numbered in their own country. I am already grieving for Canada. I want to cry.

But it is OK to bring in migrants with 3-8 kids and give them a free ride on our dime. Then claim we need them because we lost our fertility is the biggest con going.Because Canadians try to be responsible. This will be our demise because the others will out breed us out of your country. This is happening faster than you know.

" Bringing a child into this world is the most awesome responsibility you will ever take on and it ends the day you die. Before taking it on you better have a secure income, money saved in the bank, and a home or else the child is going to suffer and even worse you will suffer more watching the child suffer knowing you are to blame “. James P Varela ( My Late Father ) Advice to me as a teen.”

Sorry, James I have to disagree. My grandfather raised 10 children through the depression of the 1930’s. I doubt he ever had savings. He once shipped a car load of wheat to Ontario and the profit of it didn’t even pay the freight cost. All ten of those kids went on to be educated, productive and contributing members of society.

When we adopted our first daughter we were making $120 a month. When we returned to Canada my wife worked half time to become with the kids. I had no worked and was a stay at home dad for several years. How we survived was only by the grace of God. We still are not wealthy and have very little in savings. But Jehovah Jireh’s grace is sufficient for me. Both daughters are working and one is in university to boot.

IRAJ GARDNER, you give lots of draconian means of righting the world’s wrongs. Or you could send kids to Sunday School and church where they learn that God loves them and to be considerate of others; to be less self-absorbed and to take responsibility for their off spring and to not have children until they are in a stable marriage relationship. Oh, I know that is all so old fashioned. It would never work. Except it used to by and large.

To get a driver’s license you need to pass a test, there are courses to teach you to be a responsible driver…no such education or licensing for prospective parents!

Years ago I was talking to the owner of a small business in an Ontario town. A steady stream of local welfare recipients paraded by en route to the post office to get their cheques. The women were pushing loaded baby carriages with toddlers in tow – the men were slorking along behind with their pants down over their arses as if they had shit themselves. I gave the business owner a poke in the ribs and directed his to the parade: “How many of them are you paying for?”

He just shook his head and said: “Makes you wish that the act of procreation wasn’t so simple, eh? Too bad they don’t have to answer a skill-testing question or dial a combination, or something like that”.

Jerry, you are either very bold or very stupid to have made that statement because you are basically ENDORSING MORE ABORTIONS!!!!!!!

Perhaps more emphasis should be placed on what FAMILY is, what marriage is and how two people can work at being a couple. How a $750k house is not necessary, 2-3 cars, cell phones and media gadgets, and simply how to say ‘NO’.

Otherwise, many of these comments are as stupid as Jerry’s statement. Sterilize women after their #whatever child? Why not give them a lobotomy, or better yet, take their children away from them and sell them to one of the desperate DINKs who will pay anything for a kid.
Better yet, pay to abort the lousy fetus and tear them limb by limb and then sterilize the women; but keep the men in tack so he can go to another desperate woman and impregnate her.

Jerry, it’s called FAMILY and RESPECT. Most people know nothing about natural family planning, because it requires both partners to participate, requires respect and intimacy. If you can look at your children and grandchildren and say I wish I had aborted them when I had the chance, I’d have a nicer house now and no one to fill it.

Back in the nineties I was a single mother because my husband was killed in a workplace accident. I lived for several years in a subsidized townhouse complex, and saw the abuses firsthand caused by people having children who shouldn’t.

At fault is the welfare system that offers lucrative financial rewards to freeloaders who continue to reproduce at taxpayer expense. IMO when they get their first welfare cheque it should come with an agreement to refrain from having more children while on assistance. The moment they get pregnant they get a choice – abortion then sterilization, or cut off and lifelong ban on collecting welfare. If the father collects social assistance, he gets cut off (literally and figuratively) as well. There should be a time limit for collecting social assistance AND living in social housing – unless you are elderly or permanently disabled.

Young adults in high school should be made to take a parenting course, including household budgeting skills to teach them that kids aren’t cheap, and they are not easy to raise. They should be made to volunteer in daycare centres or elementary schools so they get a taste of raising a child. Perhaps that would be an incentive to keep their legs closed or use condoms.

Ah, but here’s the rub: Currently those who can afford to have children also tend to be those that favour large, expensive government. Cost of living goes through the roof and a great deal of working class poor people mostly HAVE already chosen to not have kids (if you can even really call it a choice). Oops, but now we have a shrinking labour pool and an unsustainably low birth rate so, Viola! Mass immigration, mostly of the type that is unskilled or unable (or willing) to participate in the labour force (thanks mostly to Harper, Canada has maintained a fairly high quality of immigrant. For now.) The problem is not poor people having kids, it’s bloated government creating a frankly ludicrously high cost of living.

You need to stop right there.
Children are a RIGHT. Every couple have the RIGHT to have children, but they are ALSO a RESPONSIBILITY. And THAT COUPLE’S responsibility. No one else’s. NEVER EVER EVER EVER equate children with a privilege. No one else has ANY right to tell you if or when, or how you have children. THAT is the epitome of a dictatorial state.

The Government should be paying Civilized Canadians a large bonus for every child they have, Civilized people are a dying race, they need encouragement..

Trudeaus friends should be required to purchase an expensive license for each child.

Not angry. We have four and let me tell you I completely under estimated how much it would cost to have kids. My dream of retirement at 55 quickly has changed to 65 now at the earliest! Had this idea that if it cost $200 a month to feed 2 adults, then just double that to $400 to feed a family. I mean there are efficiencies right? Kids don’t need prime cuts of steak. Well, I was totally and completely wrong. With kids comes waste, lots of waste, and kids are much hungrier than I ever planned for.

Love my kids immensely, but I got to wonder how anyone is able to actually save money while raising children. And we have decent incomes.

Rights and responsibilities are the two sides of the same coin. If you cannot meet the responsibility, you cannot enjoy the right. Capitalism is the best system for raising people out of poverty, and therefore the best system for enabling the most people to enjoy the right to have children and meet the necessary responsibilities.

Most Canadians have a smaller family. Fake refugees have lots of kid all paid for by the Canadian tax payer. Free health dental school etc. Sometimes for generations. Mean while our seniors facility’s are sold to the Chinese government to operate. Nothing for the disabled or those less fortunate except longer wait times and clogged emergency wards. While a single Canadian mother waits on a government list for months for housing. Fakeugees are given hotel rooms not cheep ones either all paid for by us and front of the line health care. Thanks Turdo

Hear, hear!

I would add this: Let’s offer welfare moms a $10k cheque to get their tubes tied after the first pregnancy. One-time offer.
