The Ontario Court of Appeals has made a landmark decision, ruling that cultural norms cannot be used to justify lighter prison sentences.
A ruling that was made after a lower court convicted an Iranian immigrant of sexual assault and he received an 18-month sentence.
That's an 18-month sentence for a man who forced his wife to have sex with him and would rape and beat her nightly.
The reason for such a light sentence?
The lower court judge cited the "cultural gap," noting the accused didn't even know what he was doing was illegal.
Fortunately, the victim and her lawyer appealed the decision.
WATCH my video to see why I believe this decision calls for increased vetting of immigrants coming to Canada.
